To wonder what to do with this dog?

This morning I went for an early morning walk and saw my neighbours door wide open and their puppy was running around the block. I thought nothing of it and thought maybe they just let it run about. At around 9 a workman came and mentioned the dog was running around still. I went out to the shop and the door was still open. The puppy ran out to me, sweet little thing. , I knocked the door and shouted hello in the flat. No answer. I knocked harder and stepped in the flat, I looked around to see if anyone was in and had hurt themselves but no one was in. The whole house was im complete squalor, it had poo and wee everywhere, there was no electric, the dog had no water or food. This puppy was a bit thin, I looked around and there was nothing for the dog to eat. I got some food from another neighbour and have put the dog shut away in living room. I went to the shops and I’m wondering what to do next. I obviously don’t want to leave the dog, I could take the dog in until she comes back but then what? Maybe she just left her door open by accident? We’re not even allowed animals really. Do I just call an animal rescue? I would hate to get her dog taken off her, but at the same time she’s been gone with nothing left for the dog.

It’s a woman and her teen daughter. My neighbour saw the mum leave early last night, I obviously was concerned we searched the house to see if anyone was there. If the house wasn’t disgusting I wouldn’t of been SO concerned, but with no water. Absolutely no dog food and a freezing cold house. I was first worried about the dog. Basically I wasn’t sure if I would be overreacting by calling the police to check on them. If they just think it’s okay to live like that, and leave the puppy

Call the RSPCA.

No animal deserves to be treated like that - imagine the sort of life it has. Poor little thing

TheChip · 12/02/2021 15:59

She could have been suffering with her mental health, had some kind of breakdown and left. She might not be okay living like that and leaving her dog in a normal frame of mind.

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 15:59

This really doesn’t sound like a healthy way to live Op , and suspicious that the door was left open. I would call 101 , especially as a minor lives there.

Toocold · 12/02/2021 16:01

You need to call the police OP to protect yourself as you’ve gone into someone else’s home and taken their dog, which is admirable but you do also need to protect yourself and explain why you had been in the house.

Pinkfreesias · 12/02/2021 16:01

Call the police non-emergency line, 101, to ask for their advice on what to do next.

FossilisedFanny · 12/02/2021 16:01

I have called for a welfare check before, the police said it’s better to be safe than sorry.

TitleOfYourSexTape · 12/02/2021 16:01

Gosh this is quite extraordinary, a squalid house with front door left wide open, with a puppy roaming in and out as well. Wow! Did you check all the cupboards to make sure there was no dog food? How old is the daughter?

Toocold · 12/02/2021 16:02

Roughly how old is the teenager? Have you seen them? I would also be concerned about them with regards to the police.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 16:07

I don’t know how old the daughter is but she’s at least 15/16. I haven’t seen the daughter in a while. They have no flooring, no curtains. There was no dog food that I could see but I didn’t check everywhere. I’m going to call 101 now just as you say I don’t want to be accused of stealing the dog.

If you don't want to look after the dog then call the warden. The RSPCA are variable.

Definitely call the police fir a welfare check. The woman needs help. The teen needs help.

Please stop procrastinating and ring them.

giletrouge · 12/02/2021 16:08

Yes now concerned for the daughter as well as the dog - and the woman herself. All very upsetting OP and definitely one for the police.

Cherrysoup · 12/02/2021 16:16

This sounds horrific, if it’s a housing association, don’t they come and repair stuff?

LakieLady · 12/02/2021 16:20

This is so sad, both for the puppy and quite possibly for the woman who appears to have abandoned her home.

Any idea what breed the puppy is? He sounds really trusting amd sweet and he's lucky you found him. And I'd love to see a puppy pic. Grin

Dogsarehairy · 12/02/2021 16:23

All puppies cost a lot at the moment, that doesn't align with a bare hosue.
You need to check if it is stolen, it may well have a very loving home somewhere else. Any vet can scan the chip.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 16:24

I’m on hold now to the 101 once I’m off I’ll post a pic, he’s gorgeous. He looks a bit thin bless him. They only moved in a few months ago but honestly it’s no excuse for the house to look as it does. I hope they are all okay

It’s a German Shepherd puppy, he’s got huge paws so he will end up massive Grin my daughter is begging for us to keep but I can’t sadly. They have had this dog for a while I have seen them leaving with him. Very weird vibes from my neighbours when I saw them

So would have cost a couple of thousand

Get his chip scanned.

AngelDelightUK · 12/02/2021 16:27

Hope you manage to get some answers. I think you should keep him too!!

TheChip · 12/02/2021 16:30

I love German shepherds and I'd have one if my current dog didn't hate them so much! I'm sure he dislikes them due to how much I like them. Doesn't want the competition!

Maybe neighbours have fled DV or something? Either way, I hope they're okay!

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 16:30

I would hate to think she has something going on and she think she’s lost her dog aswell. I have popped all my details so she may come and knock? I’d be mortified if anyone saw my house looking like that. But then you don’t know what she has going on. The house stunk of wee so i think it’s been ongoing.

Poor dog. Hope you get some help!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 12/02/2021 16:45

Are you sure she's not abandoned the puppy?

billybagpuss · 12/02/2021 16:45

gsrelite.co.uk/

Try these guys if you don’t get any joy elsewhere. Shepherds need such careful training at that age or they really can become difficult.

Looking forward to the pic.

Overrona21 · 12/02/2021 16:52

RSPCA are total rubbish, they’ve said they’re not that concerned. They said due to the current situation they won’t send someone out as the dog had shelter! Freezing cold shelter, sitting in its own filth, no water and no food. That’s difficult. They said because it’s a puppy someone may come out!

I don’t think they abandoned the dog, they’ve got expensive laptops, TVs etc. Just their house is vile amongst the expensive stuff. I’ve looked how expensive German shepherds are! I wonder what’s going on
