What did/does your baby sleep in?

MyLittleOrangutan · 11/02/2021 19:15

Baby due in May. I'm a stress head. Cant work out what baby should sleep in.
Would a short sleeve body suit, sleep suit and blanket work? I have loads of handmade blankets so thicker ones and folding over for colder weather, thinner ones for warmer weather?

I think it feels too simple. All these different products about.

Posting in aibu for traffic, sorry.

Not a blanket it can ride up and cover their face.

Baby grow and swaddle for nights. Or if like my little one she screamed in a swaddle so we did long sleeve babygrow and a sleep sack. You can get different togs.

Kinda depends on how hot you keep your bedroom too. At 1 year DDsleeps in a long sleeve baby grow under fleece pjs right now. Once it warms up she will will sleep in short sleeve baby grow under normal pjs. In summer she’ll just be in short sleeve baby grow!

squirrelnutkins1 · 11/02/2021 19:30

We've all been there 😊
I love growbags, just check the tog.
You've got this x

Get a couple of grobags - they’re brill. Get a 1 and 2.5 tog and that covers all bases. Then use this image for the layers - easy peasy Smile

Baby will cry if cold so better that than wrapping in too many layers - especially in May

Sorry - image is terrible quality. Search grobag temp chart and look at images and it’s on there

Many years ago now but a Grobag and either a long sleeve body suit or short sleeved, or both depending on the temperature. Never any blankets as that was not recommended at the time in case they went over their head.

MrsMattMurdock · 11/02/2021 19:35

I had a may baby. Short sleeved bodysuit, sleepsuit and blanket in a moses basket. I had the blanket pulled up to the waist with arms out on top. I found sleeping bags too bulky for a newborn or a moses basket but if you are using a crib they might be OK. When he moved to a cot bed at 6 months then we used sleeping bags.

Forevercurious · 11/02/2021 19:36

I agree, no blankets as they can cause suffocation. I used a gro bag swaddle thing when DS was a newborn, he was a winter baby so had a long sleeve vest, baby grow and the gro bag.

Something like this

Grobags - all 3 (now 18,16,12) all different togs - often in PJ's and a vest (mid winter) or a nappy (summer) - really made for a good nights sleep

www.babycentre.co.uk/a1053601/sleep-safety-for-newborns This is really helpful and gives you things to think about if you choose sleeping bags

AnnLouiseB · 11/02/2021 19:43

Blankets aren’t advised as they can be a SIDS risk, but there are ways to minimise the risk. When my son was tiny I swaddled him in a knitted shawl and then tucked a blanket over him and securely under the mattress so he couldn’t wriggle free. Once he was old and wriggly enough to escape the blanket and swaddle I switched to a grow bag. He now sleeps in a long sleeved vest, onesie and 2.5 tog grow bag in a room which is usually around 15 / 16c.

A zippy up swaddle or grow bag is generally safer than a blanket but a blanket can be used safely if tucked in securely, so long as they aren’t big and strong enough to wriggle it loose.

Boringnamechanging · 11/02/2021 19:43

Depending on weather but mainly short sleeved vest babygrow and grobag or jojo maman Bebe sleep snuggler

MyLittleOrangutan · 11/02/2021 19:44

Do you just need one grobag or do they need a change like sleepsuits do?

addler · 11/02/2021 19:45

You'll need several for leaks!

Skigal86 · 11/02/2021 19:45

When she was tiny she had a gro snuggle, then as she got older a sleeping bag and then a Jojo sleep snuggler, she’s about to turn 2 and has the sleep snuggler and a duvet.

With a vest and sleepsuit or PJs underneath.

AnnLouiseB · 11/02/2021 19:46

It’s useful to have a couple so you don’t have to wash and dry it in a day if you have a vomity baby or a nappy blowout. I have two 1.5 togs and two 2.5 togs.

Serin · 11/02/2021 19:47

Vest, long sleeved baby grow and sometimes a cardigan, if the room was cool and we had no heating on.
Lightweight blanket.

TwirpingBird · 11/02/2021 19:47

My baby was 'burritoed' for the first 5 weeks or so in a blanket (wrapped up and tucked under tightly) but then moved to sleeping bag at about 6 weeks once they were big enough that they couldnt slip down the neck opening. I have heard good things about swaddle gro bags but mine didnt get on with them. I just bought morrisons brand bags, 2.5 tog for winter, 1.5 tog for normal temperature, and 0.5 tog for very hot summer nights.

lanthanum · 11/02/2021 19:48

Whatever happened to baby blankets? We all used blankets before gro-bags were invented - but the cellular ones. It was duvets that were a no-no.

suziedoozy · 11/02/2021 19:49

Merino wool grobag from NZ - expensive but amazing!! Bought the next size up for my almost 2 year old.
Underneath sort sleeved vest & sleepsuit

TwirpingBird · 11/02/2021 19:49

oh and clothes wise I always do long sleeve vest and long sleeve babygrow for cold winter nights, vest and babygrow for normal nights, and vest or just nappy for hot nights. You kind of just strip them off as instinct tells you. You can check if they are hot or cold by touching the top of their chest rather than their head or hands.

Ginfilledcats · 11/02/2021 19:50

Hi I had baby last June. I'd recommend getting the gro egg so you accurately know the temp of the room then get grow bags. Our room in summer was in the 20s so she had 2 1 toys in rotation for leaks! Now it's winter, her room is 18 currently, in long sleeved vest, baby grow and 2.5 tog.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 11/02/2021 19:52

A Vauxhall Chevette. Only between the hours of 2.45 and 3.07am if travelling in a south easterly direction at 47mph with a ten degree lefthanded camber to the 22mm chipping surface whilst a crosswind of 5mph from a ENE direction on an occluded front that was anticipated to lose its identity around 0500 hours off Dogger and possibly Thames blew consistently if the moon was in waxing Gibbous.

Other than that, with a nappy, vest, babygro, light knitted hat and cellular blanket waved in her general direction whilst incantations of 'It's on Amber! Keep Going!' were hissed at her father.

Youarenothere · 11/02/2021 19:53

Oh god thanks for this, I’m due in 4 weeks and have completely forgotten to get any sleep sacks / grow bags. (It’s my second and I’m far too relaxed)

SJR86 · 11/02/2021 19:54

We used cellular blankets for our little girl (born 4 weeks prem last September) as she was too small for sleeping bags. As long as they are tucked in under the mattress they are fine. We dressed her in a vest and sleep suit with one or two blankets on top depending on the temp.

Cellular blankets can also be used to swaddle so win win!

We hadn't bought any cellular blankets when we were getting ready and ended up sending my mum out for some whilst we were in hospital as they were recommended by the drs and nurses there.
