What did/does your baby sleep in?

MyLittleOrangutan · 11/02/2021 19:15

Baby due in May. I'm a stress head. Cant work out what baby should sleep in.
Would a short sleeve body suit, sleep suit and blanket work? I have loads of handmade blankets so thicker ones and folding over for colder weather, thinner ones for warmer weather?

I think it feels too simple. All these different products about.

Posting in aibu for traffic, sorry.

Mine used to sleep in ankle length, long sleeved flannelette nighties, vest, bootees and scratch mitts, both sexes from birth until around 6 months old when they went into babygrows.

JaneNorman · 11/02/2021 19:56

Most sleeping bags are minimum of 9lbs if I remember correctly.

I recommend getting a few gro swaddles for when tiny. They’re really lightweight fur summer and super easy to swaddle them in.

CovidCakeConundrum · 11/02/2021 19:58

Grobags are great but often too big for newborns. They have grosnugs instead. Depends on their weight. You can tuck arms in and swaddle them too. Tommee tippee bought the gro company but they still make them. Love to dream make some lovely swaddled too.

Get a few in different togs, you don't want to be panicking when the weather changes and you're unprepared. DS used to wee through 3 a night when he was first born, it was a nightmare!

Blankets a big no for overnight but fine when supervised, in cot/car etc.

MyLittleOrangutan · 11/02/2021 20:05

Thank you guys! I'll look at getting some sleep bags then.
I saw these but they dont have a tog rating, so how do you know? They look thin, would you use something else with it? Or class them as 1 tog?

For clarity it's duvets that should be avoided not traditional blankets.

Mine slept in a nappy (Feb and Oct births) but we co-slept and were touching pretty much all night so I'm confident they weren't cold.

A good guide to how much they should wear is how much you are wearing. They're more likely to overheat than get too cold.

happymummy12345 · 11/02/2021 20:13

My baby slept in a baby grow and vest when it was cold. Or just a baby grow if it was too warm for a vest as well. Or just a vest when it was really hot.
And a cellular blanket and the coverlet that came with the crib then the cot bedding sets.
I hate sleeping bags and don't see the need for them. And I hate swaddling and don't see the need for that either.

MrsMattMurdock · 11/02/2021 20:14

Do what feels right for you and don't forget a great number of baby products are there to make money.

Smartiesandhugs · 11/02/2021 20:17

I always used sleeping bags. A gro snug when newborn (it’s a cross between a swaddle and a sleeping bag) as I was too worried I wouldn’t swaddle right and these have the option of arms in or out

AnnaSW1 · 11/02/2021 20:19

Check out the grobag website. It tells you everything you need to know about which tog to buy and what to dress your little one in. I think they're great

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 11/02/2021 20:20

I had 2 babies who screamed the place down in sleeping bags.

They slept in a vest and babygrow. "Feet to foot" in the crib/cot with the sheet and/or blanket up to their armpits, under their arms and tucked under the mattress so they couldn't pull it over their heads.

Is "feet to foot" not a thing any more?

moomaladen · 11/02/2021 20:35

@NeverDropYourMoonCup 😂👏👏👏

dandelionbayts · 11/02/2021 20:35

My first was fine with blankets, I wondered what the point of sleeping bags was. My second moves so much in his sleep it's a joke, a sleeping bag is essential.

NanooCov · 11/02/2021 20:36

I didn't use grobags until around 6 months as I found them a faff for middle of the night changes. They do unzip at the bottom but there's so much bulk of fabric to deal with I found it awkward. We used cellular blankets until then. Just tuck them in tightly.

MaryShelley1818 · 11/02/2021 20:36

I have a 1-week old baby and feet to foot is definitely still a thing, and baby blankets are fine if used properly.

DD is currently in a short sleeve vest, babygro, gro snug and blanket tucked in.

NanooCov · 11/02/2021 20:37

Oh and my kids are 6 and 3. Neither liked to be swaddled.

Albgo · 11/02/2021 20:43

There is a lot of incorrect advice on this thread. I'd highly recommend that you go on the Lullaby Trust's website and read up about safe sleep.

You do not have to swaddle or buy expensive Gro swaddles unless you want to.

Cellular blankets are fine if used correctly - it's thick blankets, duvets and pillows etc that aren't.

On a personal note, I bought a gro swaddle and was really annoyed with it. My baby hated being swaddled and he grew out of it in about 6 weeks anyway. I used cellular blankets, made sure his feet were at the bottom of the cot, and tucked it in properly (making sure it was below armpit height too). Once he got bigger after a few months I bought gro bags and am still using them now.

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo - feet to foot is very much still a thing.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 11/02/2021 20:47

Thanks. I don't know anyone who's had a baby in the last 15 years who hasn't used a grobag. Except me. So while I was always hearing "feet to foot" No one seems to say it any more.

I think there are so many things available now (mostly just to make money) that parenting seems far more complicated! I'm sure my mum and Grandma would say the same about how I parented compared to them though Wink

BertieBotts · 11/02/2021 21:00

Always used cellular blankets here. Never heard they weren't advised. Grobags are nice if you don't want them to kick it off. I never swaddled mine, they didn't like it.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 11/02/2021 21:03

Mine were in grow bags. They both hated being swaddled and would both immediately kick off any blanks, however well I tucked them in.

The important bit with grow bags is they mustn’t be too big for arms or neck otherwise there’s a risk that the baby will wriggle and slip down into it. Also make sure the tog is appropriate.

Vest and babygrow was my go to, but that varied depending on weather.

MyLittleOrangutan · 11/02/2021 21:10

Why on earth have so many people given and made me blankets if no one uses them anymore?! Grin

Thank you everyone for your advice, there's so many decisions to make.

What I'm going to do is buy every different type and try them and see what works for us.

I think it’s just tradition. We did use blankets in the pram, during day naps if someone was staying in the room with her, and for the first few weeks when she was swaddled in them. However there was no way I would let her sleep overnight with a blanket in her. She was so wiggly and would pull things over her face.

They are very useful for the pram and car seat when you can’t over dress them for safety - pop one over the top!

I would recommend two 1 tog ones (try JoJo Maman or M&S if you can’t find togs on the grobag website as they definitely display the tog) and one 2.5 tog for a May baby. 1 tog is good for summer months but you might need one 2.5 for colder nights. If you get any really hot nights (we had a few last summer) just a sleep suit is fine for them to sleep in (no sleeping bag) or just the bag with a nappy underneath
