AIBU to expect postman and delivery drivers to use my doorbell?

Just that really, I have missed numerous parcels because they think I can hear a knock through triple glazed windows and two double glazed doors.
The bell is in the middle of the door with a note saying please ring bell, do not knock.
I was fuming today, parcelfarce ignored my note, I had taken a day off work unpaid to wait in for this parcel and they still shoved a card through the letterbox.

Maybe due to covid knocking is safer somehow?

PyjamaFan · 11/02/2021 16:47

At least some companies have told their drivers not to use door bells or knockers due to covid.

MissMarpleDarling · 11/02/2021 16:47

Sellotape up the letterbox

terriblyangryattimes · 11/02/2021 16:50

I asked a delivery driver yesterday why he knocked instead of using the bell. He said he had no way to tell how many other people have pressed it or when we last disinfected it. To be fair he has a point.

pophop · 11/02/2021 16:50

Have you checked the bell is working? Also don't tape up your letter box because then you won't get any post at all.

tulippa · 11/02/2021 16:53

Don't know why it's safer to bang on a door than ring a bell. Surely both carry a risk. Quite often door bells don't work but if you've put a sign saying to use the delivery people should.

From your OP it sounds as if you have two sets of doors? (I might have misunderstood this. ) Could you leave the first one open if you're expecting a parcel so they can leave it in your porch?

ParlezVousWronglais · 11/02/2021 16:54

I know what you mean most of them used to knock pre covid. I can’t always hear a knock. Can you put sign saying please ring bell?

treeeeemendous · 11/02/2021 16:54

Buy a ring doorbell. Your phone will go off as they approach the door.

ParlezVousWronglais · 11/02/2021 16:54

Oh you’ve got a note. Strange

Daphnise · 11/02/2021 16:59

Delivery men don't knock or ring in my area any more. They just dump the parcel either on the doorstep or by the side of the house, and now and again leave a card saying "By door" or some such. You have to actually see them arriving to know you've had a delivery.

GraduallyWatermelon · 11/02/2021 17:02

Maybe your doorbell isn't working/audible from the door or in too strange a place? I've not heard of anyone else having this problem unless the doorbell doesn't work

wlv12 · 11/02/2021 17:04

We have had this issue - I bought a ring doorbell last March and it’s been used once by someone pressing it ever since. People just knock.

Somanysplitends · 11/02/2021 17:06

This really annoys me too! We have a porch so two doors and if I'm upstairs in the office I don't always hear when they knock. Just ring the doorbell! (I know it works because I usually test it when I've missed a delivery) To be fair I'd never thought of the covid point, I guess that makes sense. They definitely did it pre covid tho!

I had this. Courier company said no one was in. No note left either.

As no one was leaving the house (3 adults) plus we gave a dog who seems to believe his sole purpose is barking at the bell (and at foxes), yet didn’t bark, plus DH study faces the door, he sees all couriers coming so I said that the courier was clearly lying. It was a big box and I think he couldn’t be arsed.

So I put a note on the door for that exact courier (named the company), lo and behold, he rang the bell! And knocked!

We get the knock but the dog hears that too.

We thought it’s covid related but also to speed up their delivery times. They don’t wait for you to answer. Knock and walk off, sometimes leaving the package and some times not.

beeman · 11/02/2021 17:14

The answer is quite simple Most peoples doorbells dont work (in my job i will visit 4 or 5 different houses everyday and only about 40% of doorbells actually work). after a few years of ringing none working doorbells you just stop using/lookinf for them. Even with a note saying "ring the doorbell" muscle memory judt kicks in to make you knock.

The best solution is a ring (or simmilar) doorbell that alerts you to a pressence rather then waiting for the ring.

PattyPan · 11/02/2021 17:24

I agree, we have a bell and a knocker but some couriers just knock on the door, even before covid. I’ve considered painting a big arrow on the door demonstrating the location of the bell!

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2021 17:30

Change the sign to 'doorbell is sanitised after each use'. They shouldn't bang on the glass, if enough people do it it can break.

Aaaaaah · 11/02/2021 17:31

I wouldn't want to press a bell at the moment to be fair
.

kittykat7210 · 11/02/2021 17:39

I’d just use my elbow to ring the bell to be honest

How tall are you?! I have to reach above my head to press most bells round here with my fingers short arse. Grin

If you have an enclosed front porch why not leave it open with a note to leave parcel in there? I do this. Have never not received a parcel unless it needed a signature (pre covid) and even then, the delivery person sometimes would step in and knock the inner door to be heard. Easier for everyone.

I’m 5ft2 😂😂 they are normally just above elbow height or max shoulder height where I live! Never seen one I’d have to reach up to though!
