I've been watching news about Texas most of the evening. People have died, some from the cold and some from carbon monoxide poisoning trying to keep warm. It's especially difficult for older people and young children in that kind of weather. I hope they can get some relief soon and some meaningful steps taken to prevent this kind of disaster in the future.

@Cacacoisfarraige

Well Ted Cruz has headed to Cancun, Mexico according to Meidas touch. They have footage of him queuing to hop on a plane. He’s obviously got nothing to offer to the people of Texas and no interest to help either
Undated footage ?
Roussette · 18/02/2021 09:52

I saw that too. He went with all his family. Pretty appalling n'est ce pas?

DGR I'm checking it out as to its validity. It appears to be...

Alyssa Milano
@Alyssa_Milano
While
@tedcruz
was flying to Cancun
@BetoORourke
was actually in Texas making wellness-check- phone-calls.

I know this because I was on the zoom—also making calls— and watching him work his ass off for his fellow Texans.

We need more leaders who lead from a place of love.

David Shuster @DavidShuster

Just confirmed @SenTedCruz and his family flew to Cancun tonight for a few days at a resort they've visited before. Cruz seems to believe there isn't much for him to do in Texas for the millions of fellow Texans who remain without electricity/water and are literally freezing. t.co/6nPiVWtdxe

DuncinToffee · 18/02/2021 09:55

He got that one right. In fact, perhaps he should resign. Just a thought.

DuncinToffee · 18/02/2021 10:03

I haven't found any official confirmation of this trip or more importantly maybe, a denial from his office.

@SenTedCruz
One thing I learned from years of living in Texas is that you should never say "Well at least Texas Republicans can't get worse," because they always take it as a challenge and they will always prove you wrong

I did laugh at this twitter comment

There were two stories about Texas that have really got me.

The first is this
www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56100743
Texas snow: Mayor quits after 'only strong will survive' post

And the second
www.thedailybeast.com/dollar5152-power-bill-texas-winter-storm-hell-only-gets-worse
‘People Are Greedy’: The Absurd Electric Bills Slamming Texans

And you look at them together and it's no surprise as to why American is facing the crisis it is.

You have politicians who think they are elected for their own benefit and not to serve the public in ensuring basic services are run and maintained as they should. When it breaks down they blame 'socialist' mentality for trying to hold their corrupt asses to account. Meanwhile some prick is profitting off the back of it with no accountability and no shame whilst people are literally dying of cold or carbon monoxide poisoning trying to get warm or feed themselves.

This is a breakdown in civil society.

Resorting to eugenic slogans and red scare tactics when you have been caught out from not doing your actual job but simply fleecing your community is appalling.

Trump got in because of the sheer numbers who believe in this shit.

This is failed state stuff. Things you expect in Central and South America with rampant corruption. Things you expect in countries where you have to give bribes to police to escape abuse.

I don't think Americans will wake up to it.

And i think the UK is on track for the same sort of thing tbh. (Indeed i think we are firmly there already - see Grenfell and the travesty of the inquiry into it).

Pretty much as foretold by Eisenhower.
RedToothBrush · 18/02/2021 10:33

Oh and to cap it off, many are also without water:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56109720
Texas weather: Residents told to boil tap water amid power blackouts

The Mayor of Houston is saying this:

Sylvester Turner @SylvesterTurner
Water pressure is very low. Please do not run water to keep pipes from bursting. Turn off water if pipes have burst. Please contact us if you don’t know how to turn off water. Be conservative on water usage today. It is needed for hospitals and fires.

How can you boil water without power?

The temperatures have been as low as - 18C.

Thats a humanitarian disaster in the making.

The preppers weren't wrong were they?

DGRossetti · 18/02/2021 10:48

How can you boil water without power?

Thoughts and prayers ?

Rational prediction: Texas' predicament and the help it's received from other states make it realise how useful and improving the Union is, and they move back to embracing it.

In reality: Rabble rousers use this event to insist that Texas needs to "throw off the shackles of federal oppression" and remove itself completely from the Union.

I know which story the majority - maybe 52% - will swallow.

prettybird · 18/02/2021 11:01

Just imagine: if Trump were still POTUS, he'd be claiming that the winter storms hitting Texas are proof that global warming isn't happening Confused

lionheart · 18/02/2021 11:06

Jeez. Ted Cruz has flown to Cancun with his family for a holiday ...

DuncinToffee · 18/02/2021 11:52

The water situation in Texas is very worrying.

www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/02/18/texas-hospitals-water-heat-patients/

Texas hospitals are running out of water. Some are evacuating patients for safety.

DGRossetti · 18/02/2021 13:48

Texas hospitals are running out of water

I wonder how much they charge for it ?

gwenneh · 18/02/2021 13:54

The water situation in TX is dire even before you factor in a lack of power. I can't believe there were no redundancies in place, especially considering water treatment plants are such prime targets for malicious actors.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 18/02/2021 13:57

Lengthy but interesting read about Rush Limbaugh (his rise to "fame" and his seditious influence) for those of us fortunate not to have had to experience him. Thank eff he's dead is all I can say.

www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/rush-limbaugh-dead-trump-ruined-america-1129222/

Limbaugh might have begun as a ratings-obsessed provocateur, but he became one of the most influential subversives in American history. If we didn’t fully recognize that before 2020, or January 6th, we ought to know it now. No single person — not Reagan, not Cheney, not McConnell, not Trump, not Q — has contributed more than Limbaugh to the mass derangement of white America.
......

It’s hard to convey, so many media eras later, what a phenomenon The Rush Limbaugh Show was. Within a year of the C-SPAN telecast, Limbaugh was beaming out to 530 stations, with 25 million listeners, and hosting a 30-minute syndicated TV show (also with no guests) produced by Roger Ailes, who would go on to launch Fox News in 1996.

......

That’s how the right wing’s first alternative-news bubble was built. “Rush started this thing,” says former Sen. Al Franken, who responded to the Limbaugh peril with the 1995 bestseller, Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot. “And he was good at it. I mean, he’s awful, obviously, a monster, but very talented. Three hours a day is a long time to do ‘unguested confrontation,’ which is the actual name for his format. You listen to most of these guys, they just have nuts calling them, they agree with the nuts; and that’s how you fill three hours. Not this guy. You have to give him that. At the same time, for — what? — 30 years now, it’s always been true: If there’s some awful right-wing thing happening, chances are that Rush was behind it.”

PerkingFaintly · 18/02/2021 14:09

The situation in Texas sounds very scary.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves, I hope your friends are still OK.

DuncinToffee · 18/02/2021 14:15

Manu Raju @mkraju

Cruz’s office has not responded to photos on social media showing him traveling to Cancun. They haven’t confirmed or denied anything yet, not responding since last night. Comes as residents in Texas are left without running water or power amid the winter storm.

What are the odds on him being rushed back and doing an photo op at a shelter soon?
