AIBu to take my dog for a walk when she’s in heat?

Obviously on the lead, we’ll controlled. Obviously trying to avoid busy dog places where possible. But a walk a couple of times a day.

I’ve had several owners of entire make dogs give me a mouthful this week, when they’ve had to come and forceably remove their intact off lead dog from following me. Even went so far tonight that the dog that was following us had no owner anywhere visible, so I had to phone them from the number on the collar. When they arrived to get the dog (having delayed me 20 mins or so) they decided to tell me off !!

Flabbergasted! Surely if you have an entire make dog, then you should be keeping it in the lead or under supervision. Why should my dog get no excersize ? I’m keeping my dog under control. Why should I have to lock her away while male dogs roam free?

Dog patriarchy anyone?

Walk her at extremely quiet times. We stuck to pavement walks at night during her season. It was boring but she was safe

Schoolofsock · 10/02/2021 00:25

I'm reading this thread with horror. We have a bitch who is due her first season soon, we're getting her spayed after that as advised by vet. Where we live there are always loads of dogs including late night and early morning as we are right next to an area of public open space - they literally go past our house - so that is going to be fun in a few weeks! Unless we take her out in the middle of the night it will be impossible to avoid other dogs. She is a breed that needs to run so will go nuts if we keep her indoors for days on end, not to mention we have a very small garden and she doesn't do toileting there. Even if we do keep her just in the garden there are male dogs in several adjacent gardens! Our garden is very secure but will they all be barking? Do bitches need less exercise when in heat (maybe like some women who want to stay home eating biscuits with a hot water bottle Grin)

berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:26

I take the point though that the beach is likely to have off lead dogs , (especially since it’s quiet) . That’s maybe why the angry owners have been angry. Still think they should put their entire male dogs on the lead when they see a dog on the lead in the distance. Obviously I’ve been understanding, as they obviously just made a mistake, and I’ve been patient with all of them, not walking off and calling them over and waiting pleasantly for them to retrieve their dog. I’ve been going to the beach because it’s quiet though. More likely to encounter dogs on pavement round here just now (beach utterly freezing)

Any way, thanks all!

My dog we got as a pup and we were told to bring her in to e spayed after her first season.
Whilst on her first season I let her out in the back garden. I wet in for a cup of coffee and when I came out I found a dog had managed to get into the back garden and my girl was giving him googly eyes.
Apparently this dog had managed to break out of his garden and tracked her down
I wouldn’t be taking her out for walks unless you are going to spend the time separating amorous dogs from your dog

category12 · 10/02/2021 00:27

Op: "I don't want my bitch to meet off-lead dogs"
Takes her to the beach
Op: "Oh my god, there are off-lead dogs at the beach! How dare they?"

I feel like, with a little common sense, this could be avoided. Hmm

tabulahrasa · 10/02/2021 00:30

“Unless we take her out in the middle of the night it will be impossible to avoid other dogs.”

Some people do do that tbh.

“Our garden is very secure but will they all be barking?“

They might... depends on the dog

“Do bitches need less exercise when in heat”

Some are quite happy to not walk tbh, it’s not uncommon for bitches to be out of sorts in season.

berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:31

You know my least favourite thing about having a dog is dog owners.

Tbh OP If I planned to allow my dog at least one season I’d have made a plan for where to exercise her during that time. A beach is a really stupid place to take an in season bitch. Sorry but it really is. You need to source somewhere enclosed that you can have sole use of or at least the expectation that there will be no other dogs there. Beaches and parks are not it. If you haven’t got a big enough garden to properly exercise her then get in touch with local dog people/groups etc and find out if anywhere will let you hire an enclosed field or space for an hour a day. Or if you have any friends with a large enclosed garden ask if you can use it.

itwillbehormones · 10/02/2021 00:32

@berryfull it's not the same a the human cycle.

So easier to predict, So she will bleed and approx 11 days after she starts bleeding when it's calming down she will be the most receptive and fertile for 3-5 days called estrus, from memory.

What other are saying is true, we've breed bitches and on occasion when they are ready and receptive the male can literally jump on in a flash and there will be no getting him off, our bitch was all done in a matter of minutes.

berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:33

As I said , the beach is quiet.

Your dog doesn't have to be walked whilst it's in season you can just wait until she's over

Male dogs will sniff her out from miles away so it doesn't matter if you go somewhere which is "dog quiet"

It's is just as much your responsibility as it is there's to make sure nothing happens, you can have your dog under control etc but it doesn't make you the better dog owner.

Also it's not just about being under control or being able to stop any mounting, dogs can get aggressive around a bitch in heat so by taking her out you could be opening up the risk of dog fights with your dog, between other male dogs or risk getting hurt yourself.

As I said it's not imperative that you walk your bitch whilst it's in heat, just wait it out and save any drama

Bythemillpond · 10/02/2021 00:34

Tbh OP If I planned to allow my dog at least one season I’d have made a plan for where to exercise her during that time

I got my girl as a pup from a rescue and was told she needed to have her first season before they would spay her.

berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:36

And yet research suggests that dogs can still be fertile 29 days after starting bleeding! And that some keep themselves so clean that it’s not reliable to know when they started bleeding.

And research suggests also that some dogs take a few attempts to mount and then after mounting turning and tying it takes half an hour or more.

itwillbehormones · 10/02/2021 00:36

@Bythemillpond that made me laugh... was she just eyeing him up!! Or all dizzy with excitement.

So funny like "hey look mum"

Heyta · 10/02/2021 00:36

OP, will you come back in about 9 weeks with puppy photos from her accidental litter?

berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:37

Heyta, tell you what if that happens you can all have one!

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 10/02/2021 00:37

Confused so? Does that absolve you of the responsibility of planning how to safely exercise her?

tabulahrasa · 10/02/2021 00:38

“And research suggests also that some dogs take a few attempts to mount and then after mounting turning and tying it takes half an hour or more.“

Slip mating can often result in puppies though...

swinglowsweetchariot12 · 10/02/2021 00:40

Also just to point out it's not just entirely males you need to worry about, "done" dogs as well as bitches can get funny when there are hormones flying about.

We ve had dogs for 20 years of both sexes and seen all sorts

swinglowsweetchariot12 · 10/02/2021 00:41

@tabulahrasa

Yep we ve just bred our dog who had ten puppies from a slip mating so you're right they don't have to tie, just a quick slip and a flick and done lol
itwillbehormones · 10/02/2021 00:43

@swinglowsweetchariot12 I've tried telling OP this as well, her poor girl will get stressed.

It's all over the place in my place.. My female mounts my neutered male, while my intact male cracks on with my other neutered male. When she's in season is like a full on orgy!

berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:43

Well thank you, good to know about slip mating. She’s not been mounted atall thankfully.

OP posts:
berryfull · 10/02/2021 00:44

My dog hasn’t been stressed thanks itwillbehirmones, but I will bear that in mind.

The lengths that some male dogs will go to, to get at a bitch in heat, have to be seen to be believed.

We were once chased through a busy town centre, on a Saturday afternoon, and followed for a couple of miles by a randy, possessed male dog, desperate to get at our girl (1st season).

We were in a car😲
The pursuing dog was on foot/paw.

imamearcat · 10/02/2021 00:46

Totally agree with OP here I've had a few male dogs and none of them had been these out of control rapists you speak of!

I can't believe on Mumsnet where dogs aren't even allowed to be off the lead in most conversations but it's apparently fine to let their male dog be completely out of control to go and have sex with some bitch who is totally under control! Crazy!
