To ask after how long you'd chuck an open tub of ice cream?

Just dug out some vanilla ice cream from the freezer, it was open and had had maybe one bowl taken out of the tub. I sat and polished the whole thing off. Dh commented on how did it taste as it's been there for ages, atleast 6 months. I said it was fine, it's ice cream it can't go bad and he looked at me like I was daft.

Googled it and apparently after 1-2 months it would of been bad! It was atleast 6 months, possibly longer. It says a good sign it's off is if it has shards of ice on top, it was covered I had to scrape it off. It tasted fine. Now I feel sick Envy that might be due to eating almost a whole tub of ice cream

Ice cream is one of those food items which NEVER goes off 😂😂😂
I would have done the same! 😂

Whenever we have ice cream it’s sits in there so long it ends up having ice on, I had no clue this meant it was off.
Thankfully google says it’s probably fine Grin
You can tell if ice cream has gone bad by looking at it. One common sign is tiny ice shards on top of the ice cream and under the lid. In the early stages, you can remove the ice crystals and still eat the ice cream, but after it progresses the ice cream can turn into a gooey and icy mess that you do not want to eat

Apparently it does. I'm shocked and upset. It's all a lie.

I grew up knowing freezer items could get freezer burn, but I've never come across it irl. If I had ice cream in the freezer for that long it would be because no one liked it!

Once the container has been opened it can be safely stored for two to three weekss_ before being considered "old"

Well, mine was geriatric then Grin

A tub of ice cream never lasts more than a couple of days in this house. DH is a pig.

TierFourTears · 09/02/2021 21:02

While I think freshly opened icecream is nicer, we keep them for several months if they are not a flavour I'm fond of. It's fine. Might not have tye mist amazing texture, but I cant see how it will make you ill.

Oysterbabe · 09/02/2021 21:02

I think there is no amount of time that I would think was too old. I'd eat it and not worry 🤷‍♀️

bloodywhitecat · 09/02/2021 21:03

How can it go off in a freezer? The quality will decline but it won't go off if the freezer is functioning properly.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/02/2021 21:04

I’ve just chucked half a tub out for this reason - saddened me but I needed the room in the freezer!

GravityFalls · 09/02/2021 21:05

The texture can sometimes be not the best, but I’ve never known ice cream actually go off.

Ice cream has a best before date not a use by date.

It may not be at its best anymore, but it's still edible.

I have just checked my freezer in concern.
