To this this is gloriously mean spirited?

This is lighthearted and weird.

Dd (9) is at school. It's been snowy here.

A lot of the children made snowmen on the school field over breaks/lunch.

DD's temp teacher took the class outside after last break and told them all to find the snow man they had built and destroy it/get rid because and I quote 'you should only create art if you are prepared to destroy it' Hmm

I'm not sure what she meant by that (the teacher seems a bit pretentious to me and difficult for 8/9yr olds to understand) but anyway DD took the snowman down her and her friends made so whatever.

But does anyone else find it quite mean making kids destroy their snowmen? It was only DD's class and they'll be gone by the end of the week.

Still can't work out if it was some weird statement on art 😂😂

Wot? Grin the teacher’s mad.

VickyEadieofThigh · 09/02/2021 16:49

That is entirely and utterly ridiculous.

Snowymcsnowsony · 09/02/2021 16:50

Hide behind your car and pelt her with snowballs op..
What a bloody killjoy..

LApprentiSorcier · 09/02/2021 16:50

I'm with you on the 'pretentious' bit. She probably imagined the children going home and telling their parents, who'd then be awestruck by how artistic and deep she was.

Notimeforaname · 09/02/2021 16:51

Ugh. People with no fun or even a hint of a fun spirit should ever be working with children in any capacity.

grassisjeweled · 09/02/2021 16:51

Tis.

BobGalaxy · 09/02/2021 16:52

Wtf Confused

stampsurprise · 09/02/2021 16:52

“Every act of creation begins with an act of destruction” Pablo Picasso. Picasso's words were meant in the context of artistic creativity, he believed that for one to be truly creative they must destroy their old knowledge and build on a new plane.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 09/02/2021 16:52

The teacher probably imagines that the children will go home completely inspired, and then pass the wonderful, life changing message into their children and grandchildren, therefore fulfilling her destiny as some sort of guru 🤣

What a knob.

My quote earlier was from the above link

I agree that the teacher was being very pretentious

lalalalaloo · 09/02/2021 16:53

I know right??? I had to modify my 'question mark face' from DD as she took it very seriously as you do when a teacher tell you something very serious. Ha ha.

She was mean spirited when I was at school too. Been there a looong time....

Perhaps she just wanted some fresh air? Ha

I think the hairdresser should do that to her next time she gets her hair done. As she’s about to leave the salon looking great the hairdresser should say, ‘I have created wonderful art with your hair, and now I must destroy it.’

What a miserable sod your DD’s teacher is.

corlan · 09/02/2021 16:54

It's genius! The children will remember that for the rest of their lives and, in their moment of greatest need, those wise words may come back to mind and point the way forward for them.
Either that, or the teacher just wanted an excuse to get them out and running about a bit.

Felyne · 09/02/2021 16:56

Omg! I work in a (infant) school and we all had a snowball fight at break time. Enormous fun. We didn't have enough snow to make snowmen but if we did we would have left them. That's mad.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 09/02/2021 16:56

It's not art, it's a bloody snowman. A small bit of joy in otherwise crap time. What a meanie.

Eckhart · 09/02/2021 16:57

Presumably you're meant to have some say in the destruction of your own art, though?

It's not 'Only create art if you're happy to destroy it whenever somebody tells you', is it? That can't be the message she's trying to get across to the kids.

I'd love it if one of the kids had quietly said 'No. It's my art. I'll destroy it if and when I want to.'

unmarkedbythat · 09/02/2021 16:58

She sounds a right berk

Stonehopper · 09/02/2021 16:59

Kids enjoying destroying their own snowmen, it's part of the fun.

And honestly, as the homeschooling mother of an eight year old, if I were a temp teaching a whole class of them, I'd get my mean-spirited kicks where I could.

lalalalaloo · 09/02/2021 17:00

She is a right berk. I remember I wanted to leave her embroidery club when I was at school and she wouldn't let me leave for a a whole term because 'that was her rules' never mind she was mean and rude to the children and quite scary. Also boring.

I've hated her since and it's killing me trying to keep a neutral face with DD when she mentions her cantankerous meddling and meanness.

I imagine she thought that burning off their energy in this way would be fun and therapeutic?

Or she is INSANE?

I agree it’s bloody weird.

Walkingthedog46 · 09/02/2021 17:01

How utterly bizarre.

2021booklover · 09/02/2021 17:03
