Who's BU? Paying for a messed up order

CalaBallas · 09/02/2021 08:54

We are purchasing a new build property and we sourced quotes for granite worktops in the kitchen and the utility. We decided against ordering for the utility due to cost and went ahead with just the kitchen.

I had an email from our sales rep this morning to say that the wrong quote was actioned, and granite for both the kitchen and utility has been delivered. Our original quote to add it on in the utility was for £875, and they've said as a good will gesture if we want the granite they will only ask to recoup £375 towards it.

I'm happy to pay, we did want it and just didn't want to pay out that much more for such a small room. £375 seems more reasonable for the size of our utility - might aswell?

Dh is insisting it's their error, we've ordered a specific granite that's useless to the developers and wants to fight to get it for free. I'm worried in doing so we'll sour our relationship with the developer and possibly get the granite in there at all.

Who's BU?

Possibly not get it at all*

If the original quote for the utility had been for 375, would you have gone for it?

GottaGetThatPorkPie · 09/02/2021 08:57

Well they are being unreasonable obviously, they made the error and they want you to fork out for it. I imagine they know that and are hoping they get someone like you OP who'll just pay 😂

We had a similar thing in work (work in conveyancing) where a customer had asked for a quote for bifold doors, decided they were too expensive and said just standard patio doors would do, the developer mistakenly put in the bifold door. It was an expensive mistake for them but why should our client have paid?!

Finfintytint · 09/02/2021 08:57

I’d pay for it. It seems like a good compromise.

MustardMitt · 09/02/2021 08:57

I don’t think either of you are being unreasonable.

If £375 is doable - and I assume about 50% of the cost - I think I’d go for it.

Bluntness100 · 09/02/2021 08:58

Ehrm, they don’t need to sell it to you. Why does your husband feel he’s entitled to it?

Quartz2208 · 09/02/2021 08:58

I dont think anyone is really so it comes down to how much you want it and are prepared to negogiate/play hardball with them.

So really it comes down to do you want it in the utility area - when ours did the kitchen they did the utility area cheaper in different bits and I hate it! I would definitely take the offer.

DH would be the same as yours!

GottaGetThatPorkPie · 09/02/2021 08:58

Oh but I can also understand your point about not wanting to potentially sour relationships. But I don't imagine it would tbh. They are a business at the end of the day, not a friendship. It wouldn't do them very well to cut off every customer who was a little difficult imo (especially when it's about an error on their part).

CalaBallas · 09/02/2021 08:58

@BoyTree

If the original quote for the utility had been for 375, would you have gone for it?
Yes I would of, this is my point it's a more reasonable price and I'd much prefer the worktops in both rooms to match. He's just insisting we can get it for free but I don't see it worth the risk to argue with the developers over it. We'd just look grabby.
OP posts:
Raindough · 09/02/2021 08:59

I think we need figures here

How much was the initial quote for the 2 rooms?

How much are you now paying in total?

MagnoliaBeige · 09/02/2021 08:59

Neither are BU, I guess it depends how confident you are that the developer will give it to you for free if you refuse to pay the £375 and annoyed will you be if they call your bluff and don’t let you have it?

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 09/02/2021 08:59

You can try your luck and hope to get it for free, but the supplier has made a mistake and is entitled to take the extra granite back, obviously they have to pay for it to be collected.

You're certainly not "entitled" to keep it. As to whether it would sour the relationship, they're a business so presumably are happy to receive your enquiry so long as it is polite.

GottaGetThatPorkPie · 09/02/2021 09:00

Actually I think I may have misunderstood, I thought they had installed the granite already and were asking you to pay for half of it.

If they haven't installed it yet and you can still go for the cheaper option that you were going to or get the granite half price then I'd do the half price granite or the original option, not ask for it free.

I thought they were saying they couldn't change it now so you'd have to cough up half.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/02/2021 09:00

I think they are being very reasonable. It's not like they can't sell the extra.

BoyTree · 09/02/2021 09:00

Then I'd try and negotiate down a little - do you think that would appease your husband?

CalaBallas · 09/02/2021 09:01

@Bluntness100

Ehrm, they don’t need to sell it to you. Why does your husband feel he’s entitled to it?
It's a small development by a local developer and we are the last but one house to have kitchens fitted. It's been cut to size and delivered to our house, in the colour we chose from a huge range. He says it will be completely useless to them and it's more hassle for them to remove it then it is to just leave it where it is and fit it and that we shouldn't pay for their error. I do agree that we aren't entitled to it though which is why I am happy to pay.
OP posts:
Raindough · 09/02/2021 09:01

Ignore last post

They’re offering a £500 discount then

There’s absolutely no chance you’d get it for free

Bluntness100 · 09/02/2021 09:02

I think they will just take it back and use it in someone else’s home.

Newfor2021 · 09/02/2021 09:03

Has your DH not factored in that if he tried to negotiate they just take it back and sell it on to someone else?
Shame that he does t see it like the gift it is, you have been given 50% off the granite for nothing!

CalaBallas · 09/02/2021 09:03

The supplier didn't make the error, the developer sent off the wrong order from the two quotes we received. I'm not sure if this changes whether they are entitled to return it.
OP posts:
BeesAnkles · 09/02/2021 09:03

I'd be delighted at getting it cheaper due to their mistake! Why does you DH think you'll get it for free? I'm pretty sure they'd try to sell it on or offer it to another buyer.

Rivergreen · 09/02/2021 09:03

As it's a new build and the developer is the one putting it in, I think your chances of getting it free are lower than in a normal job. What's to stop the developer just putting it in an unreserved plot that needs to be sold with options already chosen?

BluebellsGreenbells · 09/02/2021 09:03

How much would the standard work tops costs? You need to deduct that surely to work out the additional cost of the better worktops

Corrag · 09/02/2021 09:04

I'd try to negotiate as well. I'd tell them my budget for the worktop is £300 and see if they'll come down to that. They'd still be recouping some of their money.

ZoeTurtle · 09/02/2021 09:05

Your husband is being really greedy. It will cost them additional money to fit it, so very unlikely they will give you the materials free.
