Neighbour damaging my ceiling?

Hi All,

Wanted some advice in to what people think these are, and whether my upstairs neighbour is causing them. They’re round “holes” and I haven’t noticed them before, but this weekend noticed several in each of the upstairs rooms. My upstairs neighbour is having work done and obviously if they’re causing it I’m going to speak to them but I don’t want to confront them about it if I’ve just been ridiculously unobservant and they’ve always been there...

Anyone seen anything similar / know what they are? (Photo should be attached...)

We have a couple of there, where the plaster has fallen off of the ceiling in those particular places. I believe it's slightly less strong there because it's where the screws are in the ceiling or some such. Mine was caused by me knocking with the vacuum cleaner but others have come off just at random.

The reason I’m questioning myself is they look to still have the paint on and I don’t see how that would be possible, but at the same time I look at my ceiling a lot (had moths about recently) and have never noticed them before (it couldn’t be moth related could it...?)

We have smooth ceilings and have little round spots on several ceilings where the plaster has fallen off. I’ve always assumed they are where fixings are for the floor above and just filled them and painted over. They are at the edges of the ceilings.

Findahouse21 · 08/02/2021 12:55

Mine still have the central paint on too

buzz91 · 08/02/2021 12:55

@Findahouse21 so upstairs doing a lot of work and causing vibrations could have just knocked it! Thanks!

Glad I’m not crazily unobservant and that my neighbours aren’t causing any damage!

My ceiling looks like that. There are nails holding the plasterboard up and they show.

CakeIsEternal · 08/02/2021 12:56

If they're doing work which has had them totally open up your neighbours floor and come down between the joists to touch your ceiling then you'd have had a foot through the ceiling at some point.

cherrypop86 · 08/02/2021 12:58

Normal wear and tear. You won't be able to get proof and get them to pay the damage if that's what you're after.

buzz91 · 08/02/2021 13:02

@cherrypop86 nah, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything they were doing - it’s my first property and I couldn’t find anything when I googled. Vibrations causing some paint to off is normal and we’ll be repainting soon

It could be where the plasterboard pins have shown through and just been painted over previously.

TigerDrawers · 08/02/2021 13:41

We've got these in our ceilings and they drive me bonkers. They're the nails holding up the plasterboard above but once they've started dropping down, nothing holds them in place forever. I think we'll have to replace them with screws next time. We filled them and repainted over them last time we decorated but they're still coming down.

I don't think it helps that DP wanders around upstairs like a herd of elephants but the floor must be pretty poor quality as even the cat jumping off the bed sounds like someone's dropped a bowling ball on the floor!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/02/2021 13:42

I see many of those in my job, so many that here is an industry standard word for the small areas where nail fixings show though - nail pops!

MintyMabel · 08/02/2021 14:00

Nail pops in plasterboard. Not your neighbour's fault.

buzz91 · 08/02/2021 15:19

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for starting this thread, we have those in the ceiling of our upstairs bedrooms in our new house (so nothing above them except attic which isn't used at all) and I've been wondering if they were normal.

Longdistance · 08/02/2021 23:22

I’ve got them all over my ceiling. The only people in the house is us.
