To ask what YOU think a high salary is?

Going off the back of the salary thread and the savings threads. A lot of people are aghast at the wages and say that ppl are lying!

What do you think is a high wage for say a woman in their 30's?!
Would you say differently for a man?

I think anything over 100k is a high wage for either. 25-35k would be low imo and anything in the middle would be a good salary.

25k full time is still £3 an hour more than the minimum wage.

You are right that it IS a low wage. But it's wrong to assume that it's only under 30s that are on that wage, or that it's low when you compare the salary to the average. Obviously there are people on much much higher salaries but it's not uncommon or low.

Ginfordinner · 06/02/2021 22:28

Average salary for a solicitor round here is £38k, accountant £32k, Doctor £54k, dentist £78k, vet £44k, biology teacher £36k, deputy head teacher £53k.

I took these figures from Reed Empoyment

EmpressSuiko · 06/02/2021 22:29

Anything over 30k is a good salary and anything over 50k is a high earner IMO but my parents have always had a very low income and myself and my partner have a well below average income so I’m comparing it to that.
And I’m sorry but what dream world are you living in? My husband is in a full time role and earns well under 25k as do al of people I know, some work 40 hours a week and earn £18k a year.

Aiaiaicorona · 06/02/2021 22:29
@Aiaiaicorona but you are aware of other people in the world? Or have researched a salary band for what you do, right? You're amazingly advanced a human to never associate a person's spending behaviour with what they do to earn. Wish I was that insular.
I guess I just don’t care. If people are struggling then I care but why should I have an interest in what people earn if they have a roof over their head, food on the table, bills paid and are happy?

EmpressSuiko · 06/02/2021 22:31

Oh and the people I’m referring to earning 18k a year and working full time are in their 30’s, not everyone is able to have a successful carer and many people work in manufacturing/labour/retail and don’t climb up any ladders.

RedLlama · 06/02/2021 22:31

@minimummies

Under 25k to me would be extremely low and I would expect it to be a part time role if I'm honest.
It’s all relative though isn’t it?

I’m in my 30s and earn just over £23k for full time. I don’t live in london, don’t have kids, don’t have a massive mortgage on a 6 bedroom house, don’t go on 5k holidays to the Bahamas, so what I earn I enough for me to live perfectly happily to a good standard. Plenty of people who are on loads more than me always seem to be getting new cars, going on expensive holidays, have an £80 per month phone contract and then complain they are skint

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 06/02/2021 22:31

@Abcdeisarealname

I am in the midlands and £100,000 for a single earner would be almost unheard of

All your full time GPs, most hospital consultants and dentists will be on over £100k

NHS dentists are not taking home over 100k. They’d have to be doing an huge amount of private work on top of NHS to reach that amount.
justasking111 · 06/02/2021 22:31

The only friends I know who earn well 78-100k are in the government sector, one in health, one in employment. My GP friend is part time so paid pro rata. But this is Wales so salaries are lower in general, so that kind of salary is a bit eye popping around here.

hellywelly3 · 06/02/2021 22:31

50k I would consider a high wage

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/02/2021 22:35

London living wage is more like 21k based on a standard 40 hour week and there are many many people in London earning much more.

The median (the salary earned by the middle person in the range) for London is £35k.

The mean is likely much higher.

BeakyWinder · 06/02/2021 22:35

Wow OP you've lived a charmed life. I do/will earn more than 25-35k in my life but I also appreciate I'm very fortunate to have landed on a path that will enable that, though hard work but also some luck and timing to walk into jobs. Some people graft their entire lives without seeing more than £9 an hour.

lljkk · 06/02/2021 22:35

Over 50k is probably high
Maybe over 60k in London

Under 20k is low

Age & sex independent

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/02/2021 22:35

GPs definitely are, I know several.

shouldreallynamechangemore · 06/02/2021 22:36

Urgh. I feel successful because I have my own house I love, first in the family to go to uni, had lots of experiences, lots of friends, managed to avoid marriage to a dick, self employed with clients who respect what I do. Very rarely think of myself of being "unsuccessful". Earn about 30k a year all from clients a business i have built up myself. And then despite all of this I read a thread like this and feel like shit. I am not even a superficial, consumerist person and this thread makes me feel like I have failed.

The question we should be asking is why the hell are the delivery drivers and carers and cooks and all those other people society needs to look after us are paid peanuts. Not having some kind of pissing contest about what we earn.

minimummies · 06/02/2021 22:36

@BeakyWinder and where have I said that it was a bad thing ? I just gave my opinion on what I thought a high and low wage is...and so have many others. I don't earn a high wage btw.

OP posts:
17bluebirds · 06/02/2021 22:37

Anything over 30k
I'm late 40s, full time, degree and 15 years experience, management level, and only earn 22k. In the south east.

It depends on your sector really.

GraduallyWatermelon · 06/02/2021 22:38

How much do you think most people are paid? Honestly OP, you're very ignorant.

I don't think this is fair. Just because a wage is the average, it doesn't mean anything above its a high wage, especially to individuals.

Its all relative - I earn £45k (at 27) and would have considered it an unbelievably high wage at 22. Now I see 80k as a high wage. I live in a commuter town in the South East and work in London. I'd say a good wage in London and the SE is >80k

namechange7567785544 · 06/02/2021 22:38

As someone who works over 40 hours a week in a very stressful job and earning wayyyyyyyyyyy less than £25k I definitely think you live in lala land OP. Theres a lot of people that earn less than 25k and work long hours, full time in demanding jobs. You're extremely ignorant imo.

GraduallyWatermelon · 06/02/2021 22:40

But I'm also aware that this is my personal opinion and that others may hold different views dependent on their living costs, area they live in, life experience etc

Ginfordinner · 06/02/2021 22:40

Median salary where I live is £23.7k.

NuniaBeeswax · 06/02/2021 22:41

Never change, MN.

shinynewapple2021 · 06/02/2021 22:41

I think £25 - £35k is average , and above that is high

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 06/02/2021 22:42

If you think under £25k is a low salary, probably part time, then you have lived a very privileged life.

StrugglingICUnurse · 06/02/2021 22:42

35-40k

TeddyBeans · 06/02/2021 22:45

As a full time TA I earn just over 1k a month before deductions. That's 12k a year for a keyworker job 🤷‍♀️

My new partner currently earns 29k a year and the change in lifestyle has blown my mind. I wouldn't know what to do with 40-50k let alone 100
