To ask what YOU think a high salary is?

Going off the back of the salary thread and the savings threads. A lot of people are aghast at the wages and say that ppl are lying!

What do you think is a high wage for say a woman in their 30's?!
Would you say differently for a man?

I think anything over 100k is a high wage for either. 25-35k would be low imo and anything in the middle would be a good salary.

Under 25k to me would be extremely low and I would expect it to be a part time role if I'm honest.

No that’s just minimum wage

EileenGC · 06/02/2021 22:59

It REALLY depends on the industry. In mine, you're around £10k at age 25. It stays like that for a few years until you secure a permanent (for life) position. Average salary £50k. You could secure it at 23 (very rare) or at 33 (most likely).

A high salary in my job would be £100k+. It goes from almost zero to six figures real fast. I'm still in my 20s and nowhere near that and I'd be bloody grateful for a £20k salary right now. Last year I made £4k, for reference. And yeah, no one cares what qualifications you have. Salary matches job title, and as long as you get the job, you'll get the salary.

FlyingPandas · 06/02/2021 22:59

Totally depends on where you live, what you do, and what your peer group of friends do/earn etc. You can be aware, in theory, of what 'most' people earn in terms of a general earnings bracket for the overall population, but your perception will be skewed by the people that you spend your life socialising and working with.

We're in SW London and live in an affluent area where a salary of £100k pa is probably fairly typical and not exceptional at all. But if we moved to our original home towns, though (S Wales/NW England) that kind of income would be seen as insanely high.

Sexandthecityminusthesex · 06/02/2021 22:59

Lovely wee stealth boost there OP.. Go and put us 25k and less ruffians in our place.

BiBabbles · 06/02/2021 23:02

@Warsawa31 Congratulations on the promotion Flowers

Siepie · 06/02/2021 23:03

I think £50k = high but I know several people in their 30s who earn that (including doctor DP)

and £100k+ = extremely high, I'd be surprised if there's anyone in my social circle who earns that

minimummies · 06/02/2021 23:03

@Sexandthecityminusthesex I never said I was a high earner! I never stated my earnings...my opinion wouldn't change no matter what I personally earn!

OP posts:
Countrygirl38 · 06/02/2021 23:03

I would class £30,000 as a high salary

dalrympy · 06/02/2021 23:03

For me anything over £30k is decent. I would consider £50 high.

Mousehole10 · 06/02/2021 23:03

Surely it depend if you’re single or not? I think under 30k is low (as in I wouldn’t want to have to live on it), 30k-60k is good and over 60k is high. But then I wouldn’t want to be single or the sole earner on 60k, I would think that’s a low household income. Whilst two people earning 40k each would have a good household income of 80k.

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 06/02/2021 23:06

@Abcdeisarealname
What? No way. I have family that are GPs, and I don’t know any GPs on that amount! Consultant wage also less (around 70k) , unless some private work is being done.

I live in south east and average house price in my village is probably
around 800k... so I would say 150k and above would be high.

Ideasplease322 · 06/02/2021 23:06

These threads always end badly. I have gotten absolute kickings on here for commenting - but here I go again.

Average salary stats are skewed by youngsters who tend to earn much lower salaries.

Average full time salary for a woman in her 30s is around £30k. For a man is £35k.

So for me:

£30k - £40k average
£40k - £60k good
Above £60k high

I choose £60k here because above this there is no child benefit.

However I got an absolute kicking in here for saying someone on £35k wasn’t a high earner

LouNatics · 06/02/2021 23:07

Anything that is paid as a salary and not by the hour is a pretty fancy job where I’m from.

When I got my first salaried job there was much rejoicing. I was paid £8,200pa for full time hours. Anyone deciding that was the dark ages, it was 16 years ago. I had two other jobs alongside my salaried job to bring up my income to nearly £12k and on this I got a mortgage and had my first DC.

idontlikealdi · 06/02/2021 23:08

I know what the average salary is but in my profession 100k is good add on bonuses prob 150k. Sorry if that offends people.

Then you would also be able to tell that what is deemed 'high' or 'low' is entirely dependant on where in the country you are. Tbh your post actually makes you sound a bit snobby shallow in your viewpoint.

Fingerbobs · 06/02/2021 23:12

Pre-COVID, for the financial year ending March 2020, the estimated median household income after taxes and benefits in the UK was £30,800. So half the households in the UK have less than that to spend, and half have more. So if one person in your family, or more than one combined, earns £41k, your household is in the upper half of households in the whole of the UK.

£30k for a household is crazy!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/02/2021 23:16

@AmIBeingTwatty

£30k for a household is crazy!!
In what way?
daisypond · 06/02/2021 23:16

I’m in SW London. I earn 32k and DH earns less. I think we’re fairly typical.

CutePixie · 06/02/2021 23:16

It depends on where you live. Starting salaries for teachers and nurses (outside of London) is £25k per annum before tax. Not everyone has the privilege of earning £25k so don’t look down on them. These people work full time. You sound very ignorant.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 06/02/2021 23:17

Crazy good?

Or crazy bad? (In which case yes your username applies)

Hailtomyteeth · 06/02/2021 23:17

My salary just hit £45 000 before I stopped work seven years ago. I miss that salary...

To me, 'a high salary' for anyone in general would be £150 000 or more. This is because I know people on £100 000 + and it seems reasonable, not high.

To me, for myself, having been on a pension for years, ten thousand sounds fabulous and £45 000 unimaginable.

noworklifebalance · 06/02/2021 23:17

@Abcdeisarealname - hahaha as a full time dentist with a full time GP OH I can assure you neither of us is on £100k - and neither are most of our friends in the same jobs....

Had a quick google and it takes 14 years at that grade for a hospital consultant to reach £100k.

Eaststreet · 06/02/2021 23:18

I don’t think gender/sex is relevant. I know men on 20k and I know women on 200k.
Outside London 100k I would consider to be good.

Whattheactual20201 · 06/02/2021 23:19

You can’t earn over 40k on mumsnet it makes you an instant troll and liar.
