Many happy returns?!

DD about to turn one. DH writing our card to her and asks me what to put - I tell him whatever he thinks. He has wished her ‘many happy returns’. I’ve told him that he’s writing a card to our baby daughter, and not someone he met five years ago on a cruise. He says that ‘many happy returns’ is a totally normal, warm greeting from a parent on their baby’s birthday. Who’s right?

YANBU - no, that’s weird
YABU - ‘many happy returns’ is a totally normal birthday greeting for your baby

Obviously this is lighthearted, and I know she can’t read so it doesn’t actually matter.

I keep finding the cards I bought for my twins’ 1st birthday, they’re 5 now. I didn’t get round to writing anything in either of them so he’s doing better than me! It’s quite formal but I’ve never really thought of the meaning until now and it’s quite sweet I suppose.

Is he doing it as a reference to Winnie the Pooh? I'm sure she'll find it funny when she's older and looks back on it.

How would she know?
