Hi there,
Posted a few days ago about my dd having a possible uti. It’s pretty much been confirmed now but the GP won’t see her. They’ve prescribed antibiotics but want me to take a urine sample in in the morning and the receptionist will send it off.

Problem is that she can’t have the antibiotic until she has given a urine sample. I’ve been sat for two hours bribing her with Kinder bars and Oreos and she has only managed a tiny drop (while screaming in agony) and will not go any more. What the hell do I do??? No fever or anything but how do I get her to pee when it’s so painful?!

My poor baby ☹️

Sorry I know it’s not an Aibu but please help!

Doctors is now shut so can’t call them back!

How old is your baby? Can you give her more liquid, if I need to take a urine sample I always drink as much as I can

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/02/2021 19:51

How old is she

Lotsachocolateplease · 02/02/2021 19:52

How old is she? How much has she drunk recently? When was her last wee?

SeaToSki · 02/02/2021 19:52

Pump her full of liquid, juice, milk whatever. Then wait 30 mins and try again

Also why cant she get antibs until she has given a sample. If they arent going to wait to get a positive culture back before giving some, why cant they just give them...

If she likes magic, give her a drink of some blue gatorade and say its fairy juice that sometimes makes your pee go sparkly and if you can catch it in the pot you can see if it worked

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/02/2021 19:53

Your best bet will be first thing.

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 02/02/2021 19:53

Lots of drinks? Juice, milk, chocolate milkshake. Food with liquid content: custard, jelly, rice pudding, cereal. Anything she'll have that will make her more likely to wee. Then try everything 30mins/hour?

Selfishhurt · 02/02/2021 19:53

Sorry, she’s 2 and a half, fully toilet trained for about 2 months. Not sure if that’s relevant but I heard that urine retention can happen in kids recently toilet trained? Have been giving her tons of liquid and still nothing!

Have you tried running all the taps?

Mylittlepony374 · 02/02/2021 19:55

How old is she? Had to get sample from my 3 year old recently, it was tough but basically I let her drink fizzy drink (7-up) which she isn't normally allowed. Then sat her on the toilet watching an iPad...eventually got there.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/02/2021 19:56

Sit her on a potty and distract as much as possible, play a game, read a story, watch peppa pig. Anything just don’t mention weeing!

MiddleClassMother · 02/02/2021 19:56

Give her drinks she loves (hot chocolate, coke, pepsi, milkshakes?) and hopefully it'll come through soon, if not first thing in the morning ring up.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 02/02/2021 19:56

At this point I would be filling her with as much liquid as you can. Bribe with whatever you cam, cola. Milkshake etc but you need to fill her bladder.

I would also try a warm bath as it will help relieve the pain and encourage her to go, you should then be able to get her to stand before she has finished to get the sample.

Good luck. Hope she is ok!

pawsies · 02/02/2021 19:56

If they get the sample and it comes back negative then they likely won't prescribe antibiotics.
I know this from personal experience. I ended up having to pay for private specialist care as the NHS system insisted there was nothing wrong with me. Hopefully it doesn't come to that and hopefully her test comes back positive and hassle free but I just thought I'd forewarn you as if they say it's negative you need to fight for the antibiotics anyway and ask for them because it is symptomatic, not because the test hasn't picked up any bacteria! Crazy how it's done when you think about it. We aren't lying, we're desperate!

Orchidflower1 · 02/02/2021 19:58

Can you stand her in the bathroom with the potty/ bowl under her and let her play with a bowl of water in the sink, pouring and tipping warm water?

Hope she’s feeling better soon.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 02/02/2021 19:58

Give her cranberry juice - will help her to go and will help relieve her symptoms.

Duckberg · 02/02/2021 19:59

Yep I was about to say cranberry juice with sugar mixed in. And a rehydration sachet if you can get her to.

Selfishhurt · 02/02/2021 20:00

That’s the frustrating thing! I’m sitting here literally with the antibiotic prescription right next to me but have been told not to give it until she has passed urine. I guess it literally doesn’t matter because the doctor said she DOES have one hence her prescribing the antibiotics over the phone but she still wanted to the urine sample?!

Hadn’t thought of giving juice and stuff, will try that now. God it’s going to be a long night with all this sugar 😂😭

If she's dreaming in pain, has she has some ibruprofen?

If you can't get the sample I'd be tempted to go to the nearest walk-in centre.

DuaLipaSuction · 02/02/2021 20:00

Scbchl · 02/02/2021 20:01

We had this with my 16 year old last month. Urine infection and told us to use first morning urine for a sample to hand in but she wasnt to take the antibiotics till after the sample. She was in agony and said bugger the sample and stared the antibiotics. Luckily they cleared it up.

Try tickling her lower back, put the taps on, and give her a tablet or your phone to watch and sit her on a potty.

Orchidflower1 · 02/02/2021 20:01

Ooh I’ve just had a thought- if it’s got to go to the gp in the morning would you be better trying to get the sample first thing anyway then it’s fresh. It will be stronger/ more concentrated in the morning. I’m not sure does wee go off?! Will the sample be able to be tested if you keep it overnight? Obviously you want her to wee tonight anyway but maybe go for sample in the morning?

Cluckycluck · 02/02/2021 20:07

Give her some Calpol/ibuprofen, get her to go to bed and while she is sleeping pick her up and pop her on the potty, hopefully she'll automatically go in her half sleepy state.

MilkchopsMcgee · 02/02/2021 20:07

Hi Op, just so you know you don't need to fill the sample pot, we can get away with less than half if that's all you can get (I work in an NHS lab). I hope this helps and yes to lots of fluids even ice pops if she won't drink!

DrCindyPops · 02/02/2021 20:15

We had this with dd last week. The doctor told me she would give antibiotics anyway as she needed them but they needed the sample to send to the lab to check over and know how to treat it better if the first round of antibiotics didn't clear it (thankfully they did)
It's horrible I had to cuddle dd whilst she was on her potty (back to the potty so I could monitor how much she was going & get the sample easier) and reassure her each time she tried to go. Plenty of fluids as much as you can and eventually she will need to go. We also gave her ice lollies to get more fluid in her!

I hope it clears up soon for her Flowers
