Hi there,
Posted a few days ago about my dd having a possible uti. It’s pretty much been confirmed now but the GP won’t see her. They’ve prescribed antibiotics but want me to take a urine sample in in the morning and the receptionist will send it off.

Problem is that she can’t have the antibiotic until she has given a urine sample. I’ve been sat for two hours bribing her with Kinder bars and Oreos and she has only managed a tiny drop (while screaming in agony) and will not go any more. What the hell do I do??? No fever or anything but how do I get her to pee when it’s so painful?!

My poor baby ☹️

Sorry I know it’s not an Aibu but please help!

You can get antibiotics for a UTI on the Lloyds pharmacy online doctor, they are quite pricey I think £25 or so. You fill in a form and collect in a few hours.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 02/02/2021 20:21

You have the prescription?
Get it filled and get the antibiotics in her! Get the sample in the morning

cptartapp · 02/02/2021 20:28

^this.
Nurse.

babytum · 02/02/2021 20:33

Stop stressing about the sample, you only need the tiniest amount. Get the antibiotic filled and get her started on it, it’s most likely a broad spectrum antibiotic anyway so in all probability will work. If you can get the sample in the morning, it’ll be fine. The sample is to check what anti biotic will kill the bacteria, the vast majority of times broad spectrum antibiotics do the job

Thedot90 · 02/02/2021 20:39

The doctor is most likely doing what is best for your child - UTI is not that common in young children, and if they have a certain number before a certain age further investigation is needed (kidney scan). Those saying take the antibiotics and forget the sample/just buy a private prescription - this is not a helpful longer term approach to the issue, particularly if she has antibiotic resistance, or recurrent uti if the first was never actually proven by sample. Sorry you’re struggling to get the urine, trying in the morning is probably your best bet, but she will pee at some point so please do take the sample to your GP.

mummydoris2006 · 02/02/2021 20:48

Hi OP, the reason for the sample is to see what bacteria grow basically! The go to antibiotic for a UTI is usually trimethoprim but often a urine sample shows a resistance to this and an alternative antibiotic such as cefalexin is then required. That's why the sample is so important, sorry that doesn't help your situation but just wanted to make you aware.

TheVolturi · 02/02/2021 20:49

My dd has had this. If yours still wears a pull up for bed, then if you've got a cotton wool pad, put that in her pull up at the front, as soon as she wees take it out and squeeze it into the sample bottle.

TheVolturi · 02/02/2021 20:50

And another thing, only give paracetamol, not ibuprofen as this can aggravate kidneys.

Selfishhurt · 02/02/2021 20:52

Hi! As @mummydoris2006 said the antibiotic is trimethoprim and I have the bottle sitting in front of me. I picked it up when the GP sent it to the pharmacy. I’ve tried 4 glasses of apple juice, loads of water, breast milk, chocolate, running taps, tickling her back, opening windows, getting her to blow, nothing is getting this pee out. When I say a tiny drop came out I mean less than a teaspoon! Definitely not enough for a sample unfortunately. I gave her ibuprofen about 45 minutes ago so hoping that helps with the pain but if not moving to put her nighttime nappy on and just give her the antibiotic. Surely the bacteria won’t be gone completely after one dose anyway?!

@TheVolturi that is a brilliant idea! I will try. At the moment she’s completely holding it in though, not even going in her underwear. She’s just been crying that she needs to pee but will not pass it. I’m so worried Sad I spoke to 111 who mentioned the ibuprofen thing but I’d already given it by the point so he said paracetamol from this point onwards. Poor dd Sad

@Selfishhurt if your daughter is in a night time nappy ask the surgery first thing in the morning for a sample pad. It looks like a sanitary towel and is popped into their nappy. It's how they get samples from little ones.

CrotchBurn · 02/02/2021 20:58

I have a tip that saved me when I was somewhere where I couldn't get cystitis medication.

You mix a tablespoon of bicarb in a glass of water. I think it has something to do with acidity but I drank it before bed and the next morning my cystitis was gone

jollyunicorn83 · 02/02/2021 20:58

Just give the ABs if she gets better you have your answer. If not you can get a urine sample . Poor wee thing

ArtfulScreamer · 02/02/2021 20:58

No real advice as I aren't medical but your poor DD has my sympathy, having suffered from an awful UTI this time last year I think I'd have punched the doctor in the face if he'd have told me to wait to take the antibiotics.

Purpleflashingunicorn · 02/02/2021 20:58

Literally going through this exact same thing, give her as much liquid as possible. Sit her on the toilet, and use a jug to pour lukewarm water on her and the sensation will make her wee and also it won’t be as painful.

TheVolturi · 02/02/2021 21:00

One dose of ibuprofen will not do any harm, I think just give up for now, put her to bed and I bet she will pee pretty soon when she falls asleep, you could always get the cotton wool out and slightly wake her to give the medicine?

FoxInSocks2 · 02/02/2021 21:01

I'd give up tonight and put the nappy on, in the hope she'll go over night as her bladder must be pretty full and uncomfortable.

If the nappy isn't that wet in the morning then speak to GP urgently.

booearing · 02/02/2021 21:06

I would just give her the antibiotics.
My Dd had a couple of UTI when she was first potty trained as well.
She is 5 now and she has not had one since.

Didkdt · 02/02/2021 21:07

We have this but as one consultant told me if the infection is one resistant to the abx it will still be showing in the sample after you start antibiotics and the antibiotic can be changed if needed.
The reason to wait is if it isn’t certain that there is an infection in which case you may not need antibiotics and you won’t be 100% certain if you pee a couple of times after the antibiotics have started.
All of that said, if she has an infection she needs to pee as much as possible and so keep up the fluids to keep flushing out the bladder

dottiedaisee · 02/02/2021 21:10

I would most definitely give her the AB tonight..otherwise it will be a. Delay of quite a few hours.

Staffy1 · 02/02/2021 21:10

Call the doctor and it should go to the out of hours service automatically. They can advise you, but surely a dose or two of antibiotic first won't matter too much.

RB68 · 02/02/2021 21:11

Feed her lots of water so that it dilutes the urine and should be slightly less painful, giver her kids pain relief and wait it out - try the running water technique - maybe run her a bath!

GlamGiraffe · 02/02/2021 21:11

Cold compress on the tummy and lower back is the technique usually used in hospital on small children once they have had a huge amount to drink. Id recommend calpol rather than ibuptofen for a uti as in some instances nsaids like ibuprofen can make them worse. Apply a cold compress whilst causing a distraction like watching a favoutite tv programme or drinking a bottle of milk. Good luck.

The gp should dip test the sample immediately before sending it away to determine whether anyibiotics should be commenced. A lab culture will confirm if the antibiotics presctibed ate the correct type

Selfishhurt · 02/02/2021 21:12

Ahhhhh!!! We have WEE!!!!!!
