Hi there,
Posted a few days ago about my dd having a possible uti. It’s pretty much been confirmed now but the GP won’t see her. They’ve prescribed antibiotics but want me to take a urine sample in in the morning and the receptionist will send it off.

Problem is that she can’t have the antibiotic until she has given a urine sample. I’ve been sat for two hours bribing her with Kinder bars and Oreos and she has only managed a tiny drop (while screaming in agony) and will not go any more. What the hell do I do??? No fever or anything but how do I get her to pee when it’s so painful?!

My poor baby ☹️

Sorry I know it’s not an Aibu but please help!

She should be given antibiotics for suspected UTI to cover her as can lead to sepsis (whilst waiting on sample and then results) - sadly know from personal experience and medical error. I would ring 111 and get out of hours prescription or take her in if worried. Good luck x

We had to do this for recurrent UTI's. I feel your pain. Best way we found was to fill her up with as many fluids as possible then half hour- hour later stand her in a warm bath with the taps still going. Worked every time.

Yay for the wee

My daughter was like this, terrified to pee when she had a uti. I used to sit her on her potty in front of a movie and give her loads of juice and eventually she would go, and I'd take her sample from the potty. It's so hard on them, the wee dotes, and on you too. I hope you get sorted quickly x

cranberry juice..and if she refuses juice/water give ice x

If she's not had a urine output (more than a few drops) in over 6 hours you need to take your two year old child to A&E.

Tell them you were unable to get a sample and ask for alternative solution in the morning.

I would give them regardless of sample. They're prescribed to your daughter and she's unable to get better without them.

SHE’S HAD A WEE

ktp100 · 02/02/2021 22:02

She needs to drink more and that will help massively as her urine will be diluted, plus she'll feel like she has to wee.

Hooray!

I had this a few months ago. DD aged 8. GP confirmed (verbally) that it was a UTI. Said not to give the antibiotics he'd prescribed until after handing in the sample. I asked if that meant denying her the antibiotics and he agreed that no, she needed them ASAP but the sample might not give accurate results if she'd had antibiotics. It was a Friday afternoon. I got the prescription on route to school pick up. Gave first dose after school. By Monday (surgery shut at the weekend) she was so much better. And obviously the sample would be skewed by then.

OK, my nurse friend told me this trick.

Put a large peice of cotton wool in her nappy. Now I know you sya she is toilet trained, does she wear a pull up at night? If so, that is your chance.

When she wees, the cotton wool will be wet. use an old syringe to suck urine from the cotton wool and you have your sample.

It isn't perfect, but it works.

Oh bugger, missed a page!
Great that she's weed!

Orchidflower1 · 03/02/2021 06:17

Hope she’s feeling a bit better this morning ZS

I work in a micro lab and we just need the tiniest drop of urine to culture. 1 microlitre is the amount we culture.
Usually we run it through a urinalysis machine too (which requires at least 3ml urine) but we can’t do that at the moment because of covid and the machine producing aerosols.
Just make sure the sample is in a white top universal container, not boric acid!
The boric acid containers (red top) have to be full or the bacteria is killed off because the acid concentration is too high. Boric acid is a preservative to prevent bacterial overgrowth and so we can keep the samples at room temperature.
Hope she feels better soon!

Kittykat93 · 03/02/2021 08:56

I would have just given the antibiotics, shes screaming in pain having a wee for God's sake ! Hope shes feeling a bit better this morning

My LG had repeated utis when she first toilet trained, its very common. Best thing yo do now is warm drinks nit cold. Warm drinks go through the system faster so she'll pee sooner.
