To think my friend has taken me for a mug?

Back in December, I made an online listing for my 2018 MacBook on Facebook marketplace and received a ton of 'lowball' offers or people asking me to drive an hour plus to deliver it to their place. A friend of mine messaged me, telling me that her current laptop had broken down and that she's having trouble finding work because of that (she's a freelancer).

She asked if I could 'sell' it to her first and that she'd pay it back in instalments after paying off her kids' stuff etc, before telling me that she would get back to me because she had to calculate everything. She eventually came up with a payment plan that lasted almost 2 years and I told her that I'd just give it to her as I didn't need the money and that if I were to bring it in for 'trade-in' I was told that I'd get basically nothing for it anyway.

So I dropped it off in her mailbox, and I thought that that was that. Fast forward to last week, she was sending me screenshots on her computer, and it was on a Windows laptop! I asked her in a semi-joking way, oh, did the MacBook spoil and she said that no, she's just using her old laptop and that she's using the one I sent her for 'storage'. If I had known she didn't really need it I definitely wouldn't have given it to her!

I'm not going to ask for it back, of course. But AIBU to be a bit miffed off by all this?

cheeky f@cker! As others have said odds on she’s sold it / kept it but ask her how much Apple gave her towards an upgrade for recycling & tell her you’ve got the serial number of the device & out of interest you’ll check with Apple where it is up to with it’s “recycling” 🤔

Skyla2005 · 03/02/2021 10:52

Just message her saying I know you have sold it and I don't wish to be friends with someone like you She's a nasty piece of work

TokyoSashimi · 03/02/2021 10:52

cheeky cheeky fucker.

SoVery · 03/02/2021 10:53

That's awful OP! I'm completely shocked. And very annoyed for you!

There was a pp up thread who said something along the lines of "wait and see how she tells it's gone for repair and is completely broken." Well, look what happened!

Definitely push for the email address of the 'company' she sent it to. Don't let this drop. There isn't a modicum of truth in this story, but if it were true then any normal person would be in touch asking what you wanted to do with it. Not send it off to Apple as merry as you like!!

EuroTrashed · 03/02/2021 10:54

She could have bought a terrabyte of storage on an external drive for about £30 so that was nonsense in the first place.

I think you have to call her out on it at this point, and just say that you realise full well that she's sold it and can she hand the money over at least.

hohohopeless · 03/02/2021 10:56

OMG! She is no friend OP.

I think she has sold it too. She's taken advantage of your good nature. I'd want to insist on seeing the voucher from Apple or details of repair shop - chances are she doesn't have either and has just flogged it on facebook or similar.

Sometimes people are just really shitty. Angry

IthinkIm · 03/02/2021 10:56

Ask her for the Apple receipt as you can get a credit for it which you'll use to it your mum a new one.

Eeeeeeeeeeeek · 03/02/2021 10:56

Wow, she's no friend. What have you decided to do?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 03/02/2021 10:56

What a cheeky cow, I’m shocked.

islockdownoveryet · 03/02/2021 10:57

What @SophieB100 said .
I agree she’s definitely lying and come up with a story . It’s up to you to confront her or let it go .

Good idea. Definitely call her out.

She'll probably then block you - as no way as she sent it back to Apple.

TrickorTreacle · 03/02/2021 10:58

I have read all of the updates including the "friend" dropping it off at a PC repair shop.

The quick timeframe in her selling it is that she have sold it to CEX online. It only takes a few days, 1 week tops and she would have got around £320 cash if the Macbook was in good condition / grade A.

NoseinBook3 · 03/02/2021 10:59

She’s sold it for sure

toolazytothinkofausername · 03/02/2021 11:00

Yep, she sold it.

PussGirl · 03/02/2021 11:01

Lying for sure. Sold it most likely.

Happygogoat · 03/02/2021 11:05

This is so bad :( sorry OP. She's no friend.

I think send a final text suggesting that you don't want to feel this way but some of her behaviour and the delay in telling you all this suggests she's been dishonest about what happened to the laptop! If indeed it did go for repair, you are really disappointed she didn't tell you it was faulty as you had done a lot of checks yourself and therefore would like to speak with the engineer at the store?

Say you'd value some honesty in the friendship to move forward, it's not about the money although times are hard for us all and you were trying to be kind. Perhaps she could come clean and/or suggest a solution that allows you both to draw a line.

I bet she sold it for a lot less than you were going to which is why she didn't struggle, and anything she got was pure profit!! Awful.

ThelmaNotLouise · 03/02/2021 11:07

I don't think PC World are doing repairs at the moment, or certain branches only. I'd check if I were you, because she is so obviously lying.

Why don't you Google her postcode and "Macbook Air for sale" and see what comes up – bet you anything you'll find the ad she posted.

AudTheDeepAndCrispAndEven · 03/02/2021 11:07

Game set and match to her I think. But at least you know who she is and won't be caught again.

4Mongrels · 03/02/2021 11:09

Tell her that you are not happy, you want the repair mans details as you know it was working when you gave it to her. That you would also like the email receipt from Apple as they offer trade in credit towards another device and you can put this towards a new one for your Mum.

MaMaD1990 · 03/02/2021 11:10

Can you phone the PC store and enquire about the appointment for the tech to see if it actually went there? It certainly seems like she's been shady and possibly sold it but you should get something a bit more concrete before saying anything to her, just in case.

4Mongrels · 03/02/2021 11:10

I would also check sold items on eBay, you can narrow it down by area.

3JsMa · 03/02/2021 11:14

@PenAndPaperback

Sent about 3 messages this morning asking how's it going (one of which included me saying my mum REALLY needed it unfortunately) before she sent one back saying that she had sent it in for repairs last week (apparently the PC store near her does drops offs where you leave it at the door and they'll video call you) and they said they'd need to replace several parts that would almost amount to the cost of a new computer so she collected it back and then sent it to Apple for bloody recycling.

She then said that the reason she didn't tell me that was because she didn't want me to feel bad for driving all the way to her place to drop off a faulty laptop! There is nothing wrong with the laptop ffs and I am 100% sure the thing isn't fucking broken. I know this because after wiping it I tested everything multiple times and have never so much as seen a single glitch or 'green lines' on the screen and all of a sudden it's with her for a month and it breaks down???

OMG!!!AngryAngryAngry That is really horrible and I don't believe it at all!!! Did she show the proof of it?If not, she 100% sold it!
LemonSwan · 03/02/2021 11:15

Surely £450 in itself is quite cheap for a Macbook (depending on spec)

To buy new yes they are worth thousands, but to resell the 2016+ are practically worthless due to flexgate.

CakeRequired · 03/02/2021 11:16

If it was broken, how could she have been using it for storage? Grin

So she thinks you're a mug and she's actually really stupid.

Just don't give away free shit in future abd stop talking to her. Simple.

Kitkat151 · 03/02/2021 11:17

It’s shit when so called friends do something like this
