He did more in his last year than most of us manage in a lifetime.

Truly a life well lived.

OP posts:

if you say so. Whata lot of nonsense,

ShirleyPhallus · 02/02/2021 21:23

I can’t believe some of the unpleasant posts on here. Totally inappropriate!

@HeckyPeck

If he had been a deserter would the rhetotic have been the same?

Oh fuck off with that nonsense and start your own thread where people can be cunts about kind people who have died.

Amen!
CantBeAssed · 02/02/2021 21:27

Why do some people contribute to a thread with such nastiness...someone has died...does it have to be a competiton of age and circumstance...every death is sad regardless of age or cause...
This isnt just about captain toms fundraising, he is the last of a generation that fought for our country...i find his passing very poignant..when someone of this era dies i tend to reflect on what they have seen and the sacrifices they made for others...sadly it will soon be that they will no longer be around to tell their stories..i find that very sad...

NorbertMeubles · 02/02/2021 21:29

I agree with @randomer.

Ilovemypantry · 02/02/2021 21:30

So, so sad that he died of Covid/pneumonia. He and his family obviously weighed up the risks of going to Barbados but I wonder if he would still be here today if he hadn’t gone. He could have caught it on the plane or in Barbados as I expect he was shielded at his home in Bedfordshire. I suppose it was a risk he was willing to take to fulfil his dream.

maggiethecat · 02/02/2021 21:35

I'd like to blame Covid for robbing us of even kindness now.

Beautifully summed up! Totally agree! His passing is indeed poignant. Ignore the nastiness, how sad that some people are that bitter. Says a lot about them! Not even worth a response.

@DenisetheMenace

TokyoSashimi

Didn’t you know, TokyoSashimi, it’s only sad when someone dies gasping for breath if they’re young, apparently?

Covid is a filthy way to die, whatever your age. A doctor who had sat by her father’s bedside as he died described it as watching someone trying to breathe with a plastic bag over their head, which someone had punched one hole into. Imagine that for a second. Doesn’t matter if you’re 1 or 100, that is f*ing tragic and I wouldn’t wish that death on Satan.

Derailing the thread somewhat but I really don't think it's helpful stating that every Covid death is a terrible, gasping end. It really is not.
sugarhockeyicedtea · 02/02/2021 21:37

Shame on all of you posters who think it's clever/funny to nitpick at the death of a man who did so much for the NHS that you use and help cheer others during the first lockdown.

And you know what? Even if he hadn't done all that, he was a man who had a family who loved him and have lost him.

Have some empathy.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2021 21:40

It’s sad. He seemed like a lovely guy.

Hard for the family to have to deal with the press as well as the loss.

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 02/02/2021 21:42

Seriously.... being an arsehole online about someone who was fundamentally kind and did a good deed? Because of your own bitterness/jealousy/whataboutery? You’re being a twat.

If you’re bitter about not having a holiday yourself or angry about the 100,000 other people who have died from covid... direct that at our shitshow of a government. Not at an innocent dead man and his grieving family.

DateLoaf · 02/02/2021 21:45

Sad to hear he’s passed away. Captain Sir Tom brought hope to a lot of people with his lovely act of charity fundraising and came across as having a very kind spirit in his interviews. That’s incredibly impressive for anyone at the age that he was at. My sympathies to his family and friends. Flowers

summ3rs · 02/02/2021 21:47

Dear MNHQ
Out of interest, how unpleasant and disrespectful do you need to be to get banned? There are some pretty nasty comments on here (and I wouldn’t mind betting, some of these offenders are equally unpleasant on other threads too). Not to mention some utter, vile comments.

In my mind, the lack of empathy if nothing else, should result in an immediate ban!!!

RIP Captain Tom and thank you.

randomer · 02/02/2021 21:48

Its not about being bitter about a holiday....each to their own. he seemed like a nice chap and he had a lovely idea, then things got out of hand.

TokyoSashimi · 02/02/2021 21:51

I was trying not to add any more fuel to the nasty comments - but I have to agree with other posters. This man, who did so much good, has just died. He has left a grieving family.

The words Rest in Peace have never been so sorely needed - please leave the man in peace; now is not the time to proffer opinions on his travel choices, fundraising campaign or how much he should be mourned, dying at 100.

Some of the comments are truly unbelievable. 😞

AlternativePerspective · 02/02/2021 22:06

Just why do people feel the need to come on to a thread like this specifically to derail and pick fault at someone who has died not to mention suggest that his death wasn’t as sad as that of someone half his age?

If I didn’t know better I’d think that you wanted this thread removed so that there was nothing positive about him on MN.

Surely you can start your own thread to bitch and be the twats that you clearly all are.

By all means have an opinion, but a thread like this is not the place to voice it.

derxa · 02/02/2021 22:06

The worst of MN are on here tonight.

prettythepig · 02/02/2021 22:08

How can you be horrible about an old man who has passed away and raised so much money for the NHS he deserves our respect. I know that there's a lot of lives lost in this pandemic and my love and thoughts are with them but why shouldn't we pay our respects to a full life well lived. R.I.P captain tom xx

ParlezVousWronglais · 02/02/2021 22:08

To be fair he did raise over £32 million pounds. At the age of 100.
That is rather extraordinary.
