Has a confirmed Covid case is the ward closed to new admissions straight away

It depends whether there's anyone else to admit incoming patients to. My grandad was put on a covid ward before he tested positive or was even tested at all actually (he did have breathing trouble which is why he went in - but if it was negative, and he then caught covid, it could have made things much much worse!)

He did test positive in the end, but the point is they didn't know that when he was put with 5 other covid+ patients.

*Anywhere else, sorry.

That’s awful that they put him on a ward with Covid positive patients before he had got his test result back. Hope he’s on the mend now.

Nope, they don’t usually close the ward to admissions. They might if there is an outbreak and several positive cases. If there is only one case usually they will self isolate on the ward, which isn’t ideal but I suppose there are no beds elsewhere so there aren’t many options.

I was on a ward before Christmas. We were supposed to be COVID free but they accidentally moved a COVID patient into our bay. The patient was moved to a COVID ward and our bay had to be isolated but the ward stayed open. We had to self isolate for 10 days. After 5 days I was moved to a side ward as they needed the bay of 6 beds back and I was the only one left. I was discharged the following day and didn't develop COVID.

I think in mine there's a covid end and a non covid end. Anyone awaiting test results goes on the covid end (where there are more precautions and ppe in place). This was the arrangement last spring so might have changed.

No of course not! You can't block off an entire ward just because a covid patient has been admitted, they have side rooms for this reason. Luckily my ward has only had one offs but I would presume if they have a few then a whole bay would be allocated to positive patients.
