Some people have just gave up?

On our daily teams meeting many colleagues are declaring how they never want to return to the office . They are very adamant they want to continue to work from home and are even talking about selling their cars

Why are so many people embracing this insular life ? Giving up their independence of having a car ? So they can be chained to the house working off a laptop.

I have enjoyed working from home. I love spending more time with my kids and still doing a great job. Saying this I miss my office so when I was given the choice I said I want to return to the office 2/3 days a week and wfh the rest of the time.

I have enjoyed the work life balance that working at home gives me. Best of both worlds for me.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/02/2021 20:55

Why does your life become insular just because you work from home? It won't if you don't allow it to be. I know loads of people who hate office culture, dealing with co-workers and managing a commute. Never mind the money you save not having to travel to work.

lovioli · 01/02/2021 20:56

Probably because we can't do much our of work can we at the moment , walking and a food shop.

Outside of lockdown, working from home does not preclude you from leaving your house.

And maybe they have nice houses they prefer to being chained to a cheap desk in a crappy office.

squishedblueberry · 01/02/2021 20:57

I don’t think that’s giving up. Many workplaces haven’t been particularly flexible prior to this and especially if you’ve got children, working from home suits a lot of people.
In the same way that I don’t think people wanting to go back to the office are just “forgetting about risk”, I think people are just focusing on a small bright side of all of this.

If people were saying they never wanted to see family or friends again and won’t go to pubs etc when they open as well as working from home then I’d say they were giving up on life. But not for wanting to work from home.

DynamoKev · 01/02/2021 20:57

No more shitty commuting? Where do I sign?

Bargebill19 · 01/02/2021 20:57

Some people prefer to be alone and working. Some enjoy company. Would be a boring world if we were all the same.

lovioli · 01/02/2021 20:57

I am just surprised so many people want to sell their cars and are settling for this life. I work with healthcare professionals . I am surprised they wouldn't want to keep their car in case they returned to face to face practice.

No "giving up" or "settling" here. I love working from home - I'm thriving and healthier and happier than ever before in my life. Not giving up the car though, thats just daft.

luxxlisbon · 01/02/2021 20:59

Plenty of roles have always been WFH, there is nothing inherently insular about not working in an office. Right now people are conflating WFH with lockdown. The reality is in the 'real' world working from home isn't antisocial or insular at all, it actually gives you more time to spend with your actual friends and family rather than so much time with random coworkers you don't care about.

It is fine if working from home isn't for you but enjoying it and wanting it to continue is hardly "giving up".

blahblahmeh · 01/02/2021 20:59

There are a few where i work feel that way, thankfully the company is going to smart working so people can decide where they work. I'm happy i can do 3 days office and 2 at home. I do miss the office environment and going round the city centre at lunch

RickiTarr · 01/02/2021 21:01

I’ve WFH for years. I’m confused why some people think that’s a reason to sell their cars.

penpom · 01/02/2021 21:01

Very odd someone would decide not to have a car and sit in the house all day!

alibongo5 · 01/02/2021 21:01

Maybe they mean that if they are a two or more car family, they are thinking of giving one car up?
But also agree that wanting to work from home does not necessarily make you insular or giving up.

KatyClaire · 01/02/2021 21:01

Because commuting for 3 hours per day and missing having evening meals & my son’s bath time and bed doesn’t enhance my life.

dudsville · 01/02/2021 21:01

IT'S so much cheaper, I eat more healthily. I don't spend time commuting or stuck in traffic. I'm not surrounded by a hoard of people 12 hours a day, some if whom irritate me, every day. I sleep better, manage stress so easily, I've become more peaceful and happy, less sarcastic and bitchy. It's enabled me to give up smoking, and I'm considering giving up alcohol.

I miss my friends and family and the pandemic is worrying, but work? Nope. Do not miss it at all.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 01/02/2021 21:01

Horses for courses innit? Some people don't thrive in an office environment or feel that they need much social contact, while others do

LunaHeather · 01/02/2021 21:02

@lovioli

I am just surprised so many people want to sell their cars and are settling for this life. I work with healthcare professionals . I am surprised they wouldn't want to keep their car in case they returned to face to face practice.
Are you saying GPs don't want to do face to face appointments? Physios want to instruct over video link?

I fear this.

I completely understand why people want to work from home but I think there's definitely a lot of health appointments that need to happen in person.

zzizzer · 01/02/2021 21:02

A few people at work saying they're thinking of selling cars isn't quite the same as everyone doing so of course. And maybe they feel they'd be able to buy another one when they needed it.

Kitkat151 · 01/02/2021 21:03

That’s me..
working from home .....Loving it......will continue to work from home.....giving up one of our cars ( we have 2)..... it’s a waste of money to keep 2 on the road anymore.

willFOURbagsbeenough · 01/02/2021 21:04

Why are so many people embracing this insular life ? Giving up their independence of having a car ? So they can be chained to the house working off a laptop.

Because they like it?

Are you new to the world? Did you not know that some people like things that you don’t?

GoldGreen · 01/02/2021 21:05

I have a lot of friends who are doing things which are very much on the basis they will wfh forever: getting a dog, moving to the country, getting rid of a car. I do wonder what they will all do in say a year if their companies insist they come back in or at least 2-3 days a week. It’s all well and good people saying, “we won’t go back”, even where bosses have said that, but Unless you have a formal variation to your employment contact then you can’t guarantee this . I personally wouldn’t be doing anything big life wise change for a least a year until the pandemic is over. If then you are still wfh everyday then go for it.

Kitkat151 · 01/02/2021 21:07

@LunaHeather I think even after some normality returns ..lmany health appointments will continue via telephone or video call.....Trusts appear to be finding them more efficient and cost effective

willFOURbagsbeenough · 01/02/2021 21:07

I am surprised they wouldn't want to keep their car in case they returned to face to face practice.

Do you know that people are allowed to purchase a second car after selling the first one? It’s not forbidden.

AtTheWinchester · 01/02/2021 21:10

I spend a lot of money on my mortgage and other household bills and it pisses me off that I spend all day away from my house just so I can pay for it!
I can't WFH but if I could I would. I love being home.
