...to think that Ski Sunday isn't as good as it used to be ?

When David Vine was the presenter many years ago, it was all about skiing - mainly downhill but some slalom - and ski jumping. Now, we have two presenters who spend the first third of the programme wittering away and the programme finishes with snowboarding, which I absolutely cannot stand. Perhaps ski jumping isn't as popular as it used to be, it could be the BBC don't have coverage rights. I don't know. Whatever, Ski Sunday ain't what it used to be.

David Vine was before my time I'm afraid, so can't speak for that.

I guess the increase in snowboard coverage reflects the increase in popularity of that side, no? I'd welcome coverage of ski jumping too.

Personally, I agree with you because I also find the downhill races to be far more interesting. This season is weird of course. And I even miss Graham doing the course runs, if only Chemmy could!

froggers1 · 31/01/2021 14:55

Not as good as it was! It's too much chatting and silly videos from kids now

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 31/01/2021 14:58

Not as good as it was for sure, but at least it's still on. I used to like Rugby Special but that disappeared ages ago.

LadyPoison · 31/01/2021 14:58

No - we no longer watch it. It was great in it's heyday but like so many TV programs now the presenters seem more important than the subject matter.

“finishes with snowboarding, which I absolutely cannot stand.”

All snowboarding? You realise a snowboard is, in essence, just a big fat ski? Or is it the people, with their suspicious baggy clothes?

I think it’s great that Ski Sunday has moved with the times and reflects the reality of winter sports these days. Graham will be back after hanging up his skates.

peak2021 · 31/01/2021 15:28

It cannot be as good regardless of the presenters. As a latter day Eddie Edwards is not allowed to compete.

Mittens030869 · 31/01/2021 15:31

I agree, OP, it isn’t like it used to be when David Vine was presenting and yes, I’m aware that I’m showing my age, 51. I loved it in those days. Grin

Mittens030869 · 31/01/2021 15:32

@peak2021 Absolutely! 🤣🤣

WildRosie · 31/01/2021 16:22

Maybe I'm showing my age in not caring for snowboarding. But I do miss the ski jumping and prattle-free presentation.

I think you’re unreasonable in objecting to snowboarding. It’s popular and viewer-friendly and it was scarcely invented back in David Vine’s day.

But YANBU to want them to shut up and show us the athletes doing their thing.

I remember David Vine and Conrad Bartelski! I even shared a hotel dining room with Ingmar Stenmark and his team (they put jam in their cornflakes at breakfast 😁). I love the addition of the other competitive snow sports on the modern shows, and Team GB are getting some good results at present. This season is difficult with the travel limitations and the changes to race programmes at short notice due to weather and/or Covid outbreaks so I think they are doing the best they can, though definitely too much chatting and missing Graham. However I watch the races live or recorded on the Eurosport channels, so not depending solely on Ski Sunday for my ‘fix’.

murbblurb · 31/01/2021 16:31

I note that Alcott and wotsisname don't have the balls to do a camera run down the course, which Graham Bell was doing even in his fifties . He's a big loss to the programme. It is indeed now mostly jabber and boring vox pop videos, plus ultra tedious human interest stuff about the skiers. Don't care!

Should have sacked it off this year for the ten minutes of actual skiing we get each week.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 31/01/2021 16:33

I completely agree. I just want to see some ski racing! Too much nonsense from the presenters now.

FadedRed · 31/01/2021 18:19

Chemmy Alcott said in the first show of this season that she was going to do the pre-race camera downhill runs but they were banned by the FIS this year as part of the Covid rules.

WildRosie · 01/02/2021 09:08

Last night's programme was ok. The skiing started within ten minutes and there wasn't much presenter stuff. I admit I switched off when the floodlit slalom started.

I don't see how the Covid outbreak could possibly have any bearing on a pre-race camera sequence. Odd.
