Inspired by another thread of places you have no desire to visit and a poster mentioned New York as having loads of rats, where have you travelled to that had loads of rodents? Except squirrels of course, they are exempted haha. And yes of course I know they are everywhere, but it's rare you see any day to day in the UK. I think! I am so so scared of them! That rat temple in India is the stuff of my nightmares.

Lincoln's Inn Fields. I used to work near there and during the day everyone sits on the grass in Summer eating their sandwiches. In the evening the rats appear from nowhere and swarm all over the same grass. Have never seen so many in a relatively small area. I always ate lunch in the office at my desk!

Also round the lake in Victoria Park in Hackney - lots of mums with babies in prams and toddlers cheek by jowl with rats. I can't believe they don't notice them!

Have only ever seen mice on the tube, but I'm sure there must be rats too, especially on the overground sections.

@OhWhyNot

Thailand and Vietnam

Those lovely paradise beaches are loved by rats as well as humans

At least they tend to hide away there in India they come out to play have no fear of humans

The biggest rat I have seen was in Knightsbridge opposite Harrods I still go queasy thinking about it (people were jumping up on there chairs in the cafe and screaming)

The Harrods rat was probably pregnant, ill and desperate for food.

Once you're aware of them you'll see them everywhere especially in cities like London.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/01/2021 13:32

@Devlesko

They are everywhere, is it everyone is within 2 metres of one or something like that.
www.theguardian.com/cities/2014/feb/13/urban-myths-6ft-from-a-rat It's an urban myth. Fortunately.
OhWhyNot · 31/01/2021 13:33

Venice is overrun with rats too

It’s very quite after 10pm apart from rats running about

My friend while travelling in India woke up to one running across her head (she was staying in a hotel not a hostel)

Cismyfatarse · 31/01/2021 13:34

We have a flat in the New Town in Edinburgh. When we bought it our builder said he much preferred working in that part of the city. Apparently the medieval Old Town is full of rats.

It made me so glad we had chosen to buy where we did. We had mice when downstairs was doing renovations and that was bad enough.

Palavah · 31/01/2021 13:35

London - the tube, St James' Park and Crystal Palace park.

OhWhyNot · 31/01/2021 13:36

I live in London often see them at the parks but have not seen them out and about as I have in other countries

I hate rats they are disease ridden and will kill anything in their path horrible animals

I really don’t care if the huge rat was pregnant hopefully died before giving birth so Just a few less rats populating the world

IAmcuriousyellow · 31/01/2021 13:36

An airport hotel at CDG Paris airport. Went outside for a fag in the middle of the night and the shrieking and squealing was horrible, they were visibly everywhere unafraid

jcyclops · 31/01/2021 13:49

@CallmeAngelina

Hamelin.
GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

There used to be one on TV-am, but now we have Piers Morgan.

In London, Downing Street is riddled with them, and in Edinburgh, that architectural carbuncle at the bottom of Canongate has frequent appearances.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/01/2021 14:03

@2021hwg

Several people have mentioned Berlin to me. Rats everywhere apparently
I lived in Berlin for a while and I did see quite a few rats, but no more really than in London. Never saw them indoors, either in London or Berlin, (unless you count the tube or U-Bahn as indoors, which I don't).
Chanandlerbong01 · 31/01/2021 14:08

One ran into me in New York when I was wearing strappy sandals, I just felt it’s feet on my foot and then saw it scurry off.

Alonelonelyloner · 31/01/2021 14:22

Hamelin.
Lovely place. Shame they got a rogue trader to sort that one out.

BeaSmithers · 31/01/2021 14:28

Egypt. Huge massive rats running round the resort of Naama Bay. Across shop doorways, across the roads etc. Disgusting filthy place.

CallmeAngelina · 31/01/2021 14:29

@Devlesko

They are everywhere, is it everyone is within 2 metres of one or something like that.
I think that means 2metres in any direction, therefore counting digging downwards into the sewers.
bravotango · 31/01/2021 14:31

Train station waiting rooms in India - had to keep my feet up on the bench there were so many

Katiekins8 · 31/01/2021 14:31

Tinder

Rowenasemolina · 31/01/2021 14:33

London. Teeming with them. The only control on their numbers is the urban fox population

justanotherneighinparadise · 31/01/2021 14:33

I’ve seen them rurally where there is grain. Realistically they’re everywhere OP.

itsgettingweird · 31/01/2021 14:33

I lived and worked in Greece. The rats there could have been mistaken for cats - they were huge. However some were normal sized but use to play football in the walls!

Alonelonelyloner · 31/01/2021 14:36

I lived abroad and we had them living under the house. One got in one night and it was the size of a large cat. No word of a lie. It was effin terrifying.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 31/01/2021 14:37

I live in a UK city and saw a rat in the street this week.

Baycob · 31/01/2021 14:42

Miami and there was also an infestation at my stable yard one winter.

Megan2018 · 31/01/2021 14:43

Our back garden! Bloody loads sometimes.
We back on to fields and we have hens, the cats do a good job but can’t keep on top of them completely - the buggers were swinging on the bird feeders when it snowed.

Any MacDonalds carpark has them too, especially when it is dark.

Honeyroar · 31/01/2021 14:57

Warwick services has more rats that I’ve visibly seen elsewhere! Nearly everywhere has rats nowadays.

bloodywhitecat · 31/01/2021 15:00

Many years ago I went for an early morning walk in the little fenland village I lived in (Cambridgeshire fens), when I was almost home I walked past a field that had just been harvested and was full of loose grain. As I walked you could hear the rats rustling through the stalks of wheat and the whole field was literally alive with rats. It completely grossed me out, I have never seen so many rats in my life.
