Do you live near the sea and a city?

If you do, where do you live? We want to uproot and start new somewhere as we’ve had enough of Cornwall. I love big cities and my partner loves the beach so trying to find somewhere that has both!

Sorry not really an aibu but wanted a big range of answers so we can explore properties.

Choose Cardiff! You won't regret it! I'm African, have grown up here since a child. Such friendly people and great schools for kids and places to explore! For 400k you'd definitely be able to get a lovely 4 bed!

ShutUpAlex · 01/02/2021 00:09

We’re thinking Mumbles?

Oh, I was there once, it's lovely!

WildImaginings · 01/02/2021 00:16

South Wales.

Vale of Glamorgan here. Avoid Penarth. It's overrated and overpriced.

catsarecute · 01/02/2021 00:19

Liverpool is fabulous. Areas to look would be Waterloo/Crosby, or if you went to the Wirral, New Brighton, Hoylake or West Kirby are all really nice and well worth a look.

Scarby9 · 01/02/2021 00:30

Define 'near'!
I am 5 miles from the sea.
35 miles from the city where I work.
North Yorkshire.

thegcatsmother · 01/02/2021 00:34

I always liked Fowey when I went there, when dh was going through his sailing frenzy.

I can't say I'd move to Fareham or Stubbington. I grew up in Fareham, have relatives in Titchfield and am always horrified by how built up and busy the whole place has become.

Isle of Wight perhaps, beaches, surfing, and a ferry hop to the mainland.

Vancouver Island as well....fantastic place.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 01/02/2021 00:36

@happinessischocolate

I'm not sure why people are suggesting southampton, it's on the river not the coast and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any beaches
I agree the closest beaches are Bournemouth, Christchurch and Portsmouth seafront
grannycake · 01/02/2021 04:30

Surfing on Gower is great but on the whole the best surf is on South Gower in winter and north gower in summer - might be worth living in the middle (this is what we did). Limits the length of journeys to the beach through Gower lanes

BidensWingWoman · 01/02/2021 05:03

South Queensferry. Right on the sea and driving, I dunno, maybe 20 minutes from Edinburgh centre? Beautiful. Love it here.

JamMakingWannaBe · 01/02/2021 05:09

Another vote for Aberdeen. Gorgeous beach.

BrizNiz · 01/02/2021 05:14

I'm not sure why people are nominating Bristol. The beaches close to the city aren't particularly nice unless you're into mud flats and an estuary.

LoveFall · 01/02/2021 05:18

Forgive me, as it is a long way away from Cornwall, but Vancouver is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, fringed by beaches, and nestled among mountains. The city is very multicultural and vibrant. Vancouver has its share of problems with homeless etc., but overall it is a good place to live.

Nonamesavail · 01/02/2021 07:29

RE: Southampton, Lepe and Calshot are Southampton postcodes and are beaches. Only 30mins drive to lovely Highcliffe too.

RaaRaaeee · 01/02/2021 08:09

Southampton doesn't have any of its own beaches (unless you count western shore/ Victoria country part which is pretty but I wouldn't put my feet in the water if you paid me £5000 Grin) but it's well placed to reach the beautiful sandy beaches in Dorset very easily and as PP said we often drive to leap and calshot to walk the dogs in the week which are close by. Quick to drive to Portsmouth, and well linked to London, Winchester, Salisbury ect. You are on the doorstep of the new forest if you live on the west side of the city.
To the poster who said the witterings were Southamptons nearest beaches- it's easier to drive to Christchurch than west wittering from Southampton by far!

Gobbycop · 01/02/2021 08:13

Kind of.

An hour North of Aberdeen.

Good city and a lot of coastline. No palm trees though.

Fantail · 01/02/2021 08:53

Yes. I live a 1 minute walk to the nearest beach, can walk to three more within 20 minutes and in the capital city of my country. Also in the tsunami zone...

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 01/02/2021 09:20

I can't say I'd move to Fareham or Stubbington. I grew up in Fareham, have relatives in Titchfield and am always horrified by how built up and busy the whole place has become

And they dont bloody stop building! Its getting to ridiculous levels

I assume the earlier comment regarding witterings being the closest beach to southampton was referring to sandy beaches...as everywhere else has stoney beaches

RaaRaaeee · 01/02/2021 10:07

Christchurch has sandy beaches! It's about 45 minutes to get there from where I live according to my sat nav, a nice scenic route through the forest. West wittering is about 10 miles further, my sat back suggests it takes an hour and 24 minutes and that's without horrendous traffic though Chichester and the bottle neck road to get to the beach. There are lots of other beautiful beaches to the west too.

corythatwas · 01/02/2021 10:16

@RaaRaaeee, which direction is nearest depends on which part of Soton you live in- we're in the east part of town so West Wittering easier for us. Was also thinking about the traffic: I love Dorset, the bit I don't love so much is being stuck in a traffic jam somewhere on the outskirts of the New Forest.

RaaRaaeee · 01/02/2021 10:34

@corythatwas that's true suppose it depends which side of the city you live on!

CounsellorTroi · 01/02/2021 10:37

@WildImaginings

South Wales.

Vale of Glamorgan here. Avoid Penarth. It's overrated and overpriced.

Agree re Penarth. Mumbles near Swansea a better bet
devildeepbluesea · 01/02/2021 11:47

@CounsellorTroi having lived in both places I'd personally disagree, simply because Cardiff is so much nicer than Swansea.

Penarth is overpriced though.

CounsellorTroi · 01/02/2021 11:57

Oh I agree that Cardiff is a lot nicer than Swansea, I live here! But Swansea nearer to better beaches.

CounsellorTroi · 01/02/2021 11:59

Cardiff is also handy for the Brecon Beacons, Monmouthshire and the Vale of Glamorgan. And it has a waterfront. Pretty good really.
