If you do, where do you live? We want to uproot and start new somewhere as we’ve had enough of Cornwall. I love big cities and my partner loves the beach so trying to find somewhere that has both!

Sorry not really an aibu but wanted a big range of answers so we can explore properties.

Not sure if echoing anyone else but Durham. Close to Newcastle, Sunderland and beaches galore

Newnamefor2021 · 31/01/2021 20:35

I'm in Swansea. That's my vote.

Our city centre isn't the best, we have loved super rural previously, so to us this is amazing, but the city centre is pretty pitiful and that was before Covid.

The beaches are amazing, the schools are good (we moved for a better school), and the house prices are really good.

I think is fairly diverse which is lovely.

Welsh language is an essential subject at school, so that might be a consideration.

If you're going to Wales, live in Cardiff and drive to the beaches I reckon. There's loads going on in Cardiff

Porthcawl or Llantwit Major are both about half an hour away and people surf there. Then there's the Gower about an hour or so away.

This lists some good surfing spots in Wales: www.visitwales.com/things-do/adventure-and-activities/watersports/gwen-spurlocks-top-surfing-spots

I live in Dublin........
Some lovely beaches here

diamondsr4u · 31/01/2021 21:10

Portsmouth, Brighton, Bournemouth. Defo wouldn't say Southampton

dublingirl66 · 31/01/2021 21:18

Gosh this thread is amazing

Loved in skerries Dublin
Possibly the loveliest place by the sea, close to city and not far from airport

Brighton - not sure why so many have suggested it - crowded and expensive??!

Some of the suggestions are great
I am also taking a note of them
Would love to live near a beach again

Also if considering Ireland - Galway is superb
Best of luck with your house hunt xxxx

Penarth, near Cardiff. Lovely town with a seafront and pier, good schools, easy drive to Cardiff (or walk/cycle across the Cardiff Bay Barrage), and lovely beaches along the Vale of Glamorgan coastline nearby.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 31/01/2021 21:47

Another vote for Swansea. I love it here.

Beaches are gorgeous and plentiful and you get the City too. Cardiff isn't far if you fancy a day in a bigger city.

rosiejaune · 31/01/2021 21:50

I don't, but in my general region, there is Liverpool. Or Morecambe/Lancaster, which is a town/small city conglomerate.

sanityisamyth · 31/01/2021 21:53

Cardiff

Glitterbubbles · 31/01/2021 21:53

Newcastle
We live 15 minutes drive to the city centre, 18 minutes to the nearest beach, can be out in the wilds of Northumberland in 20 minutes too.

CherryRoulade · 31/01/2021 21:53

Brighton Buzzy, busy, vibrant, young,
Chichester quieter, stunning beaches, good schools, safe family city
Southsea Less expensive than Brighton, lots going on, long seafront, very foodie.

Southampton is further from beaches and beaches not as nice.
Plymouth has nice beaches close by.

Welshmaenad · 31/01/2021 21:56

Another vote for South Wales. Have a look at the Vale of Glamorgan - Penarth/Sully/Dinas Powys all c close to coast but minutes into the centre of Cardiff. Also some lovely schools.

Distiller91 · 31/01/2021 21:58

Yes i live in Crosby, Liverpool. Stones throw a way from the Mersey and a 10 min train ride into Liverpool City centre. In my mersey paradise Grin

WhatWouldZenoDo · 31/01/2021 21:58

@dublingirl66 i will look on daft now. Are you from skerries? How long does it take to get in to city centre?

WhatWouldZenoDo · 31/01/2021 21:59

I won'y care about schools!! I want to retire.
I want to retire sooner than 18 years though 😭

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 31/01/2021 22:00

I think I've got a few neighbours on here.
Liverpool - coast everywhere, brilliant vibrant city

QualityRoads · 31/01/2021 22:19

Morecambe. Only 2 miles from Lancaster, a lovely historic city.

dublingirl66 · 31/01/2021 22:34

Lived in skerries for years
Fab fab place
Expensive to buy there
Around 30 mins train ride to city centre

WhatWouldZenoDo · 31/01/2021 23:11

Skerries looks lovely but no bargains really. House prices a BIT cheaper than where I live now.

Anywhere like skerries but a bit cheaper! [that's all I want - everything]

BillywigSting · 31/01/2021 23:14

Liverpool, best of both worlds, and you can buy a mansion in Liverpool for the price of a bedsit in Cornwall so you would more than likely have the pick of the nice areas. Most of the areas close to the sea have fairly good links to Manchester too

BillywigSting · 31/01/2021 23:20

Have just rtft, if you are considering Ireland I whole heartedly agree that Galway is really lovely. I'd seriously consider Waterford

Serin · 31/01/2021 23:33

Cork is beautiful.

halloween88 · 31/01/2021 23:35

Brighton?

Nomorescreentime · 31/01/2021 23:46

Hey OP I’m in South Wales. Porthcawl might be worth a look as it has a good school, an excellent beach for surfing and is close to the M4 between Swansea and Cardiff. Although if you need to be near to a train station Swansea is prob better. Happy hunting!
