Do you live near the sea and a city?

If you do, where do you live? We want to uproot and start new somewhere as we’ve had enough of Cornwall. I love big cities and my partner loves the beach so trying to find somewhere that has both!

Sorry not really an aibu but wanted a big range of answers so we can explore properties.

@ShutUpAlex ha, there is also that! My daughter might have called me that lol.

Bunnybigears · 31/01/2021 16:33

I live in Sunderland which is a city and has beaches but if I was you I would probably move to Tynemouth

catratmeow · 31/01/2021 16:34

Bournemouth

autumnboys · 31/01/2021 16:37

South Wales might suit you. We have family there and went to Uni there and it’s beautiful. Cardiff is fab.

We live in Essex where I grew up. I like the balance of sea/countryside and proximity to London. Very flat though, as my Manchester-born husband likes to point out.

MrsZola · 31/01/2021 16:39

I live in a seaside town between Southampton and Portsmouth - my house is 10 minute walk to the beach.

catratmeow · 31/01/2021 16:43

If your family are in Cornwall, stay within the WestCountry because you of the drive/journey back and forth. That road A30 Confused

itsgettingweird · 31/01/2021 16:44

Another vote for Southsea - I grew up there!

I now live in a town not too far away and have the lovely balance of city, beach nearby but also farmland and walks.

ZippedyDooDa · 31/01/2021 16:44

Not big cities, but quite nice - and near the sea/beach: Hastings; Folkestone.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2021 16:45

@FoxyTheFox

North East coast of England would possibly fit your bill. You would be close to Newcastle, Sunderland, and Durham with both the beach and the countryside on your doorstep. You're in striking distance of Scotland and the Lake District if you wanted to go further afield for the day/weekend/a holiday. It has good rail links to the rest of the country and an airport so easy for travel as well.
Yep! I can be York or Newcastle (or Sunderland) in under two hours, coast is maybe twenty minutes away and the countryside is glorious. I love it here.
itsgettingweird · 31/01/2021 16:46

@TheySeeHerRowling

I grew up in Southsea and love the area but it's declined since I moved away (coincidence? I wonder...Grin). Palmerston Road used to be fab for shopping with 2 department stores but was awful last time I visited, a year ago. The bit I lived in, near South Parade Pier, is still lovely though with the parks and the massive Victorian houses.

Maybe the Bournemouth/Poole conurbation? Lots going on there (normally) and epic beaches but be prepared to spend a lot of time in traffic...

Remember snookies? I use to walk from Milton just for one of their cakes 🤣
OrDis · 31/01/2021 16:51

South Wales- Cardiff or Swansea depending on whether you wan’t picturesque cornwall style beaches or tourist seaside resorts

ShutUpAlex · 31/01/2021 16:52

Fiancée will want to surf so the best sort of beaches for that. I hate the beach so I don’t care what they’re like Grin

LowlandLucky · 31/01/2021 16:53

Edinburgh or Glasgow

itsgettingweird · 31/01/2021 16:55

@Xmassprout

I live in fareham. Right in the middle of Southampton and Portsmouth and just round the corner from the beaches at lee on solent
So do I Grin
Londonmummy66 · 31/01/2021 16:56

All those saying Portsmouth/Southsea - I grew up in Swansea near all the fabulous beaches and my family moved to Portsmouth - I cried the first tie they took me to the beach in SOuthsea - all pebbles and no shells - it is horrible for a beach lover.

Although they are cold the NE beaches are fabulous and I love Portobello in Edinburgh.

partyatthepalace · 31/01/2021 17:01

Glasgow - not too far from the coast and amazing scenery on your doorstep (I love Glasgow!)

corythatwas · 31/01/2021 17:02

Totally with you @Londonmummy66. The nearest sandy beach to Portsmouth/Southampton is West Wittering which is a bit of a drive.

52andblue · 31/01/2021 17:03

Edinburgh? (but expensive and a totally different School system)

Newcastle (but doesn't have an 'international' feel so maybe no good)?

partyatthepalace · 31/01/2021 17:03

Oh and Belfast. Much less vibrant than Glasgow but it’s nice and amazing value. NI is good for big waves though I imagine W coast of Scotland might be too.

Standrewsschool · 31/01/2021 17:06

Joss bay in Kent is good for surfing. Located near Broadstairs and Margate, which had a chequered past but is improving.

Londonmummy66 · 31/01/2021 17:08

@itsgettingweird - my friends and I used to sneak out of school every Friday to go to Snookies for a cake!!

BiggapTwins · 31/01/2021 17:08

North West - Liverpool 10 mins away, beaches 10 mins away.

ScreamingBeans · 31/01/2021 17:11

I don't live there, but you could do worse than Exmouth.

It's right on the sea, it's a small town but a 20 minute drive from Exeter.
