If a job posting is a month old, should you call to ask if they are still recruiting?

Not sure about this. I'm applying for things and have found a (nother) job I'm keen on but the listing has been up for about a month. I can only assume they've had an avalanche of people interested already.

Would it be frowned upon to ring and check if they are still accepting applications? It will probably take about a day to do it so don't want to waste my time if they already have stopped looking.

It won’t harm you to do so, and it’ll help you out by not having to spend time tailoring cover letter etc. Double check there is no apply by date etc, if it’s on a site like indeed I’d check the company’s website too if they have a career page.
