To ask you a sushi related Q?

Sorry I had to post here for traffic.

I really want some eel sauce with my sushi. My local sushi place will not (for some unbeknown reason) sell me a pot of it.

If I go to Sainsbury's am I likely to find it there? And if so what is it actually called?

Why don't you look on the Sainsbury's website or call your local store? Not sure AIBU can help you!

SoDiorDarling · 29/01/2021 13:29

I've tried that thanks for your help though.

I’ve never heard of eel sauce with sushi, watching with interest!

SoDiorDarling · 29/01/2021 13:30

@AllTheCakes it's like a thicker sweeter soy sauce Grin

CottonSock · 29/01/2021 13:32

Do you mean kecap manis? I've found it in m&s

Fagled · 29/01/2021 13:33

I’ve never seen it for sale in this country.

It’s however quite easy to make if that’s an option, Sainsbury’s would sell the 3/4 ingredients you’ll need.

ClaudiaWankleman · 29/01/2021 13:34

You make your own (it's very easy)?

CottonSock · 29/01/2021 13:34

I've seen eel sauce is a thing, but doesn't contain eel. You could make it. Or Sub with teriyaki

Nookable · 29/01/2021 13:35

Looks like it's called unagi sauce

www.kikkoman.co.uk/kikkoman-pro/catering-products/unagi-sauce/

Looks simple to make if you have the ingredients or can be ordered online, not sure that supermarkets would have it

FoxyTheFox · 29/01/2021 13:36

Do you mean unagi sauce? Its just sake, mirin, soy sauce, and sugar and really easy to make at home. I sometimes see it in the world foods section at the big Tesco.

Misaki · 29/01/2021 13:36

I'm Japanese. You could try to make it yourself. It's very easy. Just equal parts sugar, soy sauce and mirin.

CMOTDibbler · 29/01/2021 13:37

You can buy unagi sauce on Amazon

FoxyTheFox · 29/01/2021 13:37

My local Asian supermarket sells it, available for mail order.

Charliebigpotatoes · 29/01/2021 13:37

My local Sainsbury's used to sell it in the world foods aisle. Unagi sauce.

SoDiorDarling · 29/01/2021 13:38

Ooooh I could make some if I can find Mirin! I'll also get some kecap manis and try this too. I love mumsnet!
I think it may also be called Unagi sauce.

OP posts:
SoDiorDarling · 29/01/2021 13:38

I want it for tonight but if unsuccessful I'll order on Amazon for next time.

OP posts:
Aozora13 · 29/01/2021 13:39

Aha I got confused thinking it was made from eel, but you mean the sauce that goes with eel! It’s unagi sauce (unagi = eel) but you might need a speciality Japanese supplier, or Asian supermarket dunno if Saino’s would have it, unless there’s a large Japanese community in your area?

Aozora13 · 29/01/2021 13:39

Oops x-posted

SoDiorDarling · 29/01/2021 13:40

@Aozora13 unfortunately not. I think sainos might pull it out the bag though. It was a large Japanese section so I'm hopeful. Just wasn't 100% sure what I was looking for.

Sciurus83 · 29/01/2021 13:40

Kecap manis is a sweet soy sauce, it's Indonesian/Malay though so probably not exactly what you've had, sounds similar though

happysunr1se · 29/01/2021 13:41

If you are near a large oriental supermarket you can buy the frozen pre-cooked eel (unagi) in the same sauce. I wouldn't be surprised if this is exactly the same product sold by Japanese high street restaurants.
It's still pretty expensive though.

Unagi sauce seems to have exact same ingredients as teriyaki; soy, mirin, sake, sugar. I make my own teriyaki when I need it.
It's really quick and easy, probably making unagi sauce would be just as easy?

Einszwei · 29/01/2021 13:43

You can buy online, or at most asian supermarkets.

mackvic4 · 29/01/2021 13:50
@AllTheCakes it's like a thicker sweeter soy sauce Grin
does it have the same flavour?

SoDiorDarling · 29/01/2021 13:51

Unfortunately no Asian supermarkets near me. Wish there was though!
