This afternoon had a knock on the door from my neighbour who I've spoken to once. She said my 8 month old kitten had been shitting all over her garden and there was shit everywhere.

I find this strange as -

  1. Cats usually go in private areas and bury their mess.
  1. Other than picking up the shit there's not really much I can do.

I of course said to her I would go round tomorrow (working from home today) and pick it up. But I just find it an odd thing to go to someone's door about.

I'm even wondering if it's a fox that's been making the mess because cats wouldn't usually just leave shit at random all over the place. I also said I will look into anything that can be added to her garden so I've found deterrent spray but if that doesn't work, I can't do much more. They're cats.
And I'm not going round to her garden everyday to pick up shit.

AIBU?

Not everyone loves cats. Not everyone thinks cat shit in their garden is fine. I hate it, I hate digging up turds when gardening. If I wanted to clean up cat shit I’d have got a cat. We’ve put pepper on the garden, had an alarm thing and have water pistols at the ready but it’s no use. Hopefully the dog will now deter them.

Wombatstew · 27/01/2021 22:48

Are you providing your cat with a place to go toilet in? Because if not he might possibly move his toilet to another neighbour’s garden. Either a litter tray (could possibly leave in a covered area outside) or a patch of soft soil (add some sand maybe) in your own garden and clear the Pooh out regularly. If he has nowhere to go YABU.

maybeimamazed456 · 27/01/2021 22:51

@Wombatstew no I haven't that's a good idea, I will set up litter trays in the garden tomorrow

All the reeeeee- ing and skreeeeeeeeek- ing you see on here over dogs peeing on fences/walls or even just existing in public, but cats leaving giant toxoplasmosis turds in other people’s gardens is just a bit of a laugh. Get a litter tray and a proper fence. Sorry you took on a pet without checking you could afford all the necessary measures to stop it being a total fucking nuisance for other people but why is that anyone else’s problem except yours?

Littleposh · 27/01/2021 22:55

I once heard a cat say "don't shit on your own doorstep" and it's always stayed with me

My Mum's garden in the local litter tray for the estates cats, she has lost many plants as they shit in the pots now too after she gave up on trying to have flower beds as the plants got dug up or died.

@maybeimamazed456

Also have a look at YouTube videos of a pet behavioural experts who show/give advice on how to deal with destructive/unwarranted behavior.
Might be useful for you too.

Also there are books to do pets and how to deal with unwanted/destructive issues that are sold on internet too.

Also as a last resort you could always ask your local vets for infor of if they know of tel numbers of pets behavioral experts too.

You can find out infor on the internet for tel numbers of pets experts like this on internet.

It was a check up call by RSPCA officer cause my next door neighbours Can not stand Cats ,hate cats.
My next door neighbour reported me to the RSPCA officer, saying cause they had not seen my in my garden or out and about walking for a while, that I had abandoned my cats.

It was a pets version of a malicious tel call to the authorities,!
just like some people do tel malicious calls to social services on people.

CareBear50 · 27/01/2021 23:26

Sprinkle pepper on garden regularly. Cats hate it. Worked for me when local cat used our front lawn as a loo!

noblegreenk · 27/01/2021 23:27

It depends on the cat. I've witnessed my next door neighbours cat brazenly shitting in the middle of our lawn whilst staring straight at me! I think it's also responsible for the turds I've found on our front pathway.

You need to go and pick it up. It's disgraceful that cat owners are allowed to just let their animal crap anywhere and everywhere, whilst dog owners are legally obliged to pick up after theirs.

AradiaGC · 27/01/2021 23:27

Expecting other people to clean up your cat's shit is rude and lazy. Your pet, your responsibility.

Cats shitting on vegetables is disgusting. I grow a few vegetables in my garden. I wash them all thoroughly as I know that it's possible animals have peed on them. If there was actual shit on the vegetables, I'd obviously throw them away (and be very annoyed, to say the least!) I'd be very surprised at anyone doing differently!

@maybeimamazed456

Also check the internet to see there is a organic food peelings and other organic materials that can be used to deter cats from pooing in your next door neighbour garden too.

Sceptre86 · 27/01/2021 23:35

A cat poops in my garden all the time. Why should I pick it up, if I wanted to deal with cat shit I would have got my own? I now have cat deterents in my garden which seem to be working. My garden is for my use and that of my family, I don't want to pick up a neighbour's cat shit before my children can use their own garden particularly in lockdown. I also don't want to handle cat poo funnily enough!

Yabu, just do as she has politely asked.

Twintub · 27/01/2021 23:35

There is not much to be done as it’s a cat but I’d be pissed off too. Neighbouring cats shit in our garden and it’s visible assume they get startled before covering. We get fox shot too. I can’t see why cat owners are saying the neighbour is in the wrong. It’s just as bad a dog shit.

Coffeeandcocopops · 27/01/2021 23:38

My neighbour’s cat does a daily shit just by my front door and then does a terrible job trying to bury it. It stinks too. If I knew which neighbour I would complain just like your neighbour - cats are disgusting.

ChristOnAPeloton · 27/01/2021 23:40

Try giving him his litter tray back.

More work for you I’m afraid, but he is your kitty.

maybeimamazed456 · 27/01/2021 23:40

@Coffeeandcocopops cats are amazing, loving and smart animals. Strange to think they are disgusting.

OP posts:
Coffeeandcocopops · 27/01/2021 23:42

I empty my coffee pods onto the area where the cats shit and it keeps them away for a few weeks. But I shouldn’t have to do that.

WinstonWolf · 27/01/2021 23:48

I used to have one of the neighbour's cats shitting in my veg patch and in my plant pots. Catching him in the act was no deterrent.

The most irritating thing is that I have house cats, so already have to deal with my own litter trays, without adding the garden into the mix.

You really should set up litter trays for your kitten OP. How can you be fully monitoring your pet's health if you're not dealing with their 'output'?

GreenPlum · 27/01/2021 23:49

[quote CrotchBurn]@Connelloni

My NDN has six cats that I frequently find shitting in my garden, and yes, they've killed three shrubs between them. It pisses me off but I don't expect my neighbour to be able to do much about it.

Indecisive12 · 27/01/2021 23:52

Yes but you’re only doing the nice bits and other folk have been tolerating it’s poo. I’m astounded you’ve not got a litter tray?!

maybeimamazed456 · 27/01/2021 23:56

@Indecisive12 sorry a litter tray in the house? Why would I keep a litter tray in the house? That's half the point of making him an outside cat.

OP posts:
FoxyTheFox · 27/01/2021 23:56

I absolutely hate the cats that live next door. Neighbour has five of the fuckers and they shit in all the gardens on the street except their own. The woman across the street threatened to run them over if she caught them in her garden again after they had dug up all her new bedding plants and shit on her lawn. Whenever she finds cat poo in her garden now she picks it up and returns it to next door, sometimes she even uses a poo bag instead of just flinging it at the front door with a spade. I don't go to those extremes, but I do fling a bucket of water at them whenever I see one of them in my garden.

FoxyTheFox · 27/01/2021 23:58

Why would I keep a litter tray in the house?

Because without one you are foisting responsibility for cleaning up his shit onto other people, people who do not want to clean up cat shit.

usedandabusedx1000 · 27/01/2021 23:58

I have fake grass in my front garden and my neighbours cats go all over it and it pisses me off beyond belief but I wouldn’t go and knock on their door, there’s not much they can do.

That being said why is it absolutely not ok for a dog to do it but cool for a cat? Are cats pets or are they wild? Why life?!?
