Driving 3 miles to beach and fined £200

402 replies

nancybotwinbloom · 27/01/2021 20:01

A friend of a friend drove three miles to her nearest beach and took her newborn for a walk in the pram.

She was surrounded by police and fined £200.

This was today.

I think it must of been scary to be surrounded by police with the pram and the newborn. Surely only one of them needed to speak to her. Not mob handed. Or are they all unreasonable?

Is it unreasonable to drive three miles for a walk? I'm at a point now I can't work out what's local and what's not. I don't think she was in the wrong in all honesty.

Or is it that she drove there that it's not local enough.

I walk nearly three miles to the park with the dog and walk through the park and walk back most days and I don't think I am unreasonable?

What is local classed as these days?

If it makes the echo I will but it's not a reputable paper these days.
or maybe it doesn't report made up stuff?

MissMarpleDarling · 27/01/2021 21:45

We drove further than that at the weekend for a walk. That's awful

StanfordPines · 27/01/2021 21:45

Ah, so this is a FOAF* tale. Generally they turn out not to be true.

*friend of a friend.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 27/01/2021 21:46

@Nicknacky

6 police 😂😂😂
Can I laugh along with you?
BonnieDundee · 27/01/2021 21:47

you are politely told to move from the area and then persist to argue why you should be allowed to stay then of course you will be issued a fine.

Not if it's not against the law to be where you are . And tbh I find it worrying that posters think its acceptable for the police to make up their own rules and fine people summarily for breaking said made up rules

And if this story is true (which I've no idea if.it is) the woman concerned was not breaking the law so how can she be fined?

Do you mean they publish stuff that came from a friend of a friend?

MissMarpleDarling · 27/01/2021 21:47

I have collegues who have drove over 2 hours into work everyday and never been stopped.

Nicknacky · 27/01/2021 21:49

@PurpleWh1teGreen Absolutely, be my guest.

The police bashing on here is getting tiring. The police deal with so many people each day and very occasionally they make a mistake like the women in Derbyshire. And it makes the papers because it is such a rare occurrence.

Last week our early shift in a large Scottish town had one officer on duty. One. Thankfully they can pull in from other towns and cover the urgent calls but everything else will be left till a later date.

And that’s being replicated up and down the country.

nancybotwinbloom · 27/01/2021 21:51

@ghostyslovesheets

Or maybe they don't want to be in the paper.

Or maybe they have better stories that day.

Our paper reports on utter shite. Day on day out.

goodbyestranger · 27/01/2021 21:51

ithinkyouareveryrude you must know the the police have a terrible reputation for being bully boys and for domestic violence, as do those employed in the armed forces.

BonnieDundee · 27/01/2021 21:52

What part of that seems unreasonable to you? He has been spat at, fought with, verbally abused, assaulted, harassed and blamed during every level of these lockdowns.

That is.completely disgusting and both you and he have my sympathies. It still doesn't give him carte blanche to fine someone who hasn't broken the law but your presumption of guilt that this.woman has done something wrong when there is no evidence of that whatsoever does give an interesting if worrying insight into the attitude of your.DH to the general public

cathcath2 · 27/01/2021 21:52

@BonnieDundee

To be fair I can think of many.places.where there is a large wide prom that's nice and flat and would probably describe that as.going for a walk at the beach. I dont know the particular beach OP is referring to so can't comment on it.
There isn't a prom at Formby. I find this story very difficult to believe. I wouldn't take a pram to Formby beach and where has the person come from? Altcar? That is pretty much the only place that is 3 miles away. Everything else is either in Formby or further away (and has a nearer beach).

If the person has come from Altcar, she should definitely appeal that fine.

nancybotwinbloom · 27/01/2021 21:53

@ItsGoingTibiaK

Have you read our local? They report utter shite.

Liverpool echo

goodbyestranger · 27/01/2021 21:54

Nicknacky a rare occurrence? So no systemic racism and chauvinism in the police force?

BonnieDundee · 27/01/2021 21:55

If enforcing a fine to someone after giving them the opportunity to avoid paying is the worst thing you’ve read about this pandemic then you really need to get out more.

No. enforcing a fine on someone who hasn't.broken the law is the most worrying thing I have come across. And the justifying of it

Nicknacky · 27/01/2021 21:56

@goodbyestranger What are you talking about? We are talking about covid tickets getting issues incorrectly?

But I’m guessing already that it won’t matter what I say to you, that police are bullying, chauvinistic racists domestic abusers in your opinion.

JiminyLeeCricket · 27/01/2021 21:56

The work journeys and shopping journeys are irrelevant.

This is about driving 3 miles to Formby Beach to exercise.

Unfortunately Formby Beach has had a lot of piss-takers causing all sorts of trouble since the summer, and there is often a noticeable police presence now because of this.

They give 'visitors' one chance to voluntarily clear off. Then it's a ticket.

But none of us were there for this alleged incident so none of us know what happened.

Aloethere · 27/01/2021 21:57

I think to prevent things like this the rules in the UK need to be clearer. Here we can't go more than 5km unless it is for an essential reason(food, work, medical apps etc). It's irritating but you know where you stand and it prevents any misunderstandings.

nancybotwinbloom · 27/01/2021 21:58

@cathcath2 well I'd call it a prom. It's a big stretch of beach with a walk way. With cafes off the back of it.

Prom is the wrong word.

It's a big stretch of beach with a walk way.

What's the right way to describe it ?

I stand corrected on what it's called. Not being goady it's just what we've always called it.

Liverpool echo
No. I don't live anywhere near Liverpool, so why would I?

Forgive me, though, if, based on this thread, I'm somewhat skeptical of your ability to spot "utter shite" and ensure it doesn't get reported...

Watchitgrow · 27/01/2021 21:58

I don’t think 6 police is to crazy either again given Derbyshire incident was similar numbers.

Op I’m curious which beach this was - was it one of the Sefton beaches?

JiminyLeeCricket · 27/01/2021 21:58

Definitely clarity is needed. Lawful clarity, not boris-waffle clarity.

CurbsideProphet · 27/01/2021 21:58

I know a lot of people in that area who would travel up to 3 miles for a walk on Formby / Ainsdale / Southport beaches and genuinely believe that they were staying local, so I really hope this isn't true.

WhatFreshHell · 27/01/2021 21:58

@SadderThanEeyore

You're not supposed to drive anywhere for exercise. It's supposed to start and finish at home.
Bollocks.
Chunkymenrock · 27/01/2021 21:59

She shouldn't HAVE (not of.) Bloody stupid decision. Exercise from home. It's very, very straightforward.
