According to DP "most people" have eaten dinner by 6pm.

Referring to adults, not children.

He's obsessed with eating at a time I consider pretty early.

I'm giving him the side eye Hmm

OP posts:
diamondsr4u · 29/01/2021 03:47

6 is early for me. I like to eat late. Dh doesn't. So we've compromised and eat around 8 or half 8, sometimes I'll ensure cooking is going rather slow just so I could eat later so will be around 9 half 9.

AnnabelleMarx · 29/01/2021 04:18

‘The evening meal is cooked and called dinner or supper’.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

There is someone who actually believes both of these things are inarguable facts.

To answer the OP - we wouldn’t know many people who eat that early as most are still at work. That’s the only reason.

LizFlowers · 29/01/2021 05:56

Honestly - who cares as long as everyone eats a decent meal.

Ddot · 29/01/2021 06:27

Evening meal is tea!
Breakfast, dinner, tea.

expatinspain · 29/01/2021 06:54

Tinkerbell On Christmas Eve my Spanish DP's family sat down for dinner at 10:30pm. To be honest, I was ready to gnaw my own arm off with hunger 😂

BumbleBeegu · 29/01/2021 07:16

Depends what time you get home from work doesn't it? I don't get home until half 6 most days...sometimes later...so the earliest I eat is 7, depending on what I'm cooking. Last night it was 7.45 (and I was ravenous!). I'd LOVE to eat earlier though!! It's not a competition 🤷‍♀️

ufucoffee · 29/01/2021 07:22

We don't have dinner. We have tea. And I have it as soon I get in from work and I that is before 6 sometimes.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/01/2021 09:06

We should start using region neutral term "last main meal of the day"😂

blowinahoolie · 29/01/2021 09:11

"Families who eat dinner at 6pm or earlier, what kind of hours do you all work?"

IncorrigibleTitmouse DH works 7.15am til 2.45pm. He could work 8 til 4 but would prefer to finish earlier in the day. I am a SAHM so always around and make all meals. Up very early each morning so want out of kitchen early in the evenings!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/01/2021 09:21

‘The evening meal is cooked and called dinner or supper’

No, it’s called TEA! And supper is a Milly drink and a snack just before bed!

How can tea be called supper? They are two totally different things!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/01/2021 09:26

And it’s not a class thing!

Dh and l both work in white collar jobs, have post grads, live in nice area, and have a bit to spend

We still eat at TEA at 5:30 to 6:00. As did my ex Dh who was proper posh. As does every person l know.

I think it maybe a southern thing

TheKeatingFive · 29/01/2021 09:29

We need a nat rep survey

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/01/2021 09:30

Textbooks for non english speakers say dinner btw.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner😁

expatinspain · 29/01/2021 09:38

ArseInTheCoopWindow The must be a north south divide in working hours too, because the vast majority of people working in white collar jobs in the south wouldn't have a hope in hell of being home at 5.30pm, never mind eating their dinner then!!

Abraxan · 29/01/2021 09:44

We don't eat dinner until 7pm on a week day.
When at work dh doesn't get home til 7pm\whilst working from home we don't finish work til gone 6pm, so don't start prepping it til after that.

Even when Dd was small we didn't eat until 6:30/7pm

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/01/2021 09:56

Aaaaah so it’s a travel thing?

Dh worked 45 mins away ( before lockdown) got home 5:45
I worked 5 mins away. Got home about 5:30.

Tea eaten by 6:30. Cleaned and cleared up by 6:45.

Templetree · 29/01/2021 10:05

I live 15 mins from work.
I still wouldnt want to eat dinner before 7pm.

I think its the difference in whether a meal is functional or to be savoured.
I get that its more functional if you have young children and need to provide what seems like endless meals.
Its all very get it cleared away quickly by the tea at 5pm crowd whereas those who eat dinner later probably relax and enjoy their meal more.
My dm would serve at 5pm and race through it , removing the plates the second you had finished and quite crabby if you didnt eat quickly.
I hated it .
Breakfast and lunch are fairly quick so I like relaxing over my dinner .
Takes 5 minutes for DH and I to clear up and put the dishwasher on.

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/01/2021 10:06

We live and work in a small city in Scotland that would be the equivalent of a smallish town in England. We both work full time but i've always started really early in order to finish in time for school pick up. My normal commute is around 10 minutes. so, even though DC are now adults, I would be home about 3.30 if in the office. DH finishes at 4.30 and is home for 4.45. DS is a student but living at home.

We still have dinner around 5pm, we are all ready to eat then and might have a light supper about 8 or 9 (toast etc) but no-one eats breakfast so it's pretty much lunch at 12ish, dinner 5ish and ten snack at 8/9ish.

If anyone has anything on then we might eat later, e.g. if DS had classes in Uni he might be later. It's not set in stone, just a habit and routine now.

LovelyIssues · 29/01/2021 10:09

I have young children so we tend to eat between 5pm-6pm or they're "starving" was the same when I was a child

RedHotChiliChips · 29/01/2021 10:13

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Indeed. When I learned english at school, it was always breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tea has always been a hot drink.
Lweji · 29/01/2021 10:13

Well, yes, because you eat at tea time.

Dinner is later.

Supper is even later.

Ddot · 29/01/2021 10:14

If you get up at 4 every morning, your in bed by 9 or 10 so eating early is a must.
So I suppose its down to your job hours

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/01/2021 10:23

Dinner is at midday though.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/01/2021 10:28

Indeed. When I learned english at school, it was always breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tea has always been a hot drink.

I was without dinner once nearly because I said no to a tea😂

Bythemillpond · 29/01/2021 10:31

I don’t think with any job I have had I could come in early in order to leave early and even with a relatively close job I didn’t finish till 5.30 and walked home which took 40 minutes. My husband in his last job would leave the house at 6.30am and not get back till 8pm. I think the earliest he has ever got home was around 6.45pm so being home and have cooked and eaten dinner/tea or whatever you want to call it by 6.30pm is something that has never happened.

I think it is also about where you live as well as what you do. If you have a 9-5.30pm job with a 1 hour commute then you are never going to be home in time.
