According to DP "most people" have eaten dinner by 6pm.

Referring to adults, not children.

He's obsessed with eating at a time I consider pretty early.

I'm giving him the side eye Hmm

YANBU

I'm still at work at 6pm!

Me and the teenager eat around 7.30. He’s the youngest and the only one left at home now. When the dc were younger, and I had a husband working 8-5 in a physical job, we ate around 5.30, as he was hungry when he got home. Growing up it was 6.30, due to my dad’s hours. My parents eat later as well now (both retired).
I’d find it odd adults without small dc eating before 6, but each to their own, and it’s really none of my business.

"I'd rather eat my dinner a bit earlier, be all cleared up and done ready to enjoy my evening."

Same here Macaroni. For example we ate just before 4pm round the table for dinner/tea, and for supper at 7.30/8pm I had a bowl of porridge. I don't have piles of dishes to clear up. I would actually say that if you do things out with the normal parameters you are more flexible (if your work/family commitments allow this).

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/01/2021 20:59

We generally eat supper at 6. Too early for me really, but it's a compromise with DH who would eat his 'tea' at 5 ffs

blowinahoolie · 28/01/2021 21:05

"genuinely interested in what you all do every evening grin."

Ragwort have dog grooming to do after youngest ones go to bed, also need to shower and usually asleep by 10pm. The evening flies in very fast and up early at 5/6am to repeat it all again 😂

AliceMadHatter · 28/01/2021 21:12

@Localocal

Dinner before 6 is unusual, unless you are a child or an old person.
Or a person who likes to eat at 6PM and doesn't need to eat again before bedtime because that's what they want to do.

"Dinner before 6 is unusual, unless you are a child or an old person."

Yep, am practically geriatric at grand old age of 38👌

elizabethdraper · 28/01/2021 21:17

We eat between 5 and 6pm

I think it is weird that people sont eat with their children. It is really important family time in our house. From 6months old everyone sits at the table and talk about our day

LoveBeingAMum555 · 28/01/2021 21:21

We live up North. Most people I know eat their evening meal between 5-6pm. I start work early so I can be finished, meal eaten, and all cleared up by 7pm. DH can be late home so we sometimes eat a bit later, but rarely after 7pm.

Bargebill19 · 28/01/2021 21:26

I get in so late I’ve given up with dinner. I eat it for breakfast instead. When I get in it’s supper!

SnugglySnerd · 28/01/2021 21:29

We eat as a family at about half 5 apart from Saturday when we give the dcs something quick and beige and have a grown up meal together after they have gone to bed. Just because it is nice to eat and have a conversation without having to keep getting up to get things, wipe someone's bum, clean up spilt drinks etc.
However I never sleep well on a Saturday which I've realised must be due to eating a bit later and neither of us can be arsed washing up late in the evening which means I always get up on Sunday to a pile of dishes and start the day feeling tired and pissed off.
Think I prefer me early dinners with the kids!

MajesticWhine · 28/01/2021 21:32

It was 8pm tonight because I was pissing about with roast potatoes. 7.30 is more normal.
6pm is still cup of tea time really.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 28/01/2021 21:33

We have dinner (tea) at 6.30, my 2 year old included though she does have a snack at 4.

samanthawashington · 28/01/2021 21:35

I eat at 5.30 as later eating gives me indigestion. I can't sleep on a full stomach

Scottsy100 · 28/01/2021 21:59

We eat between 5.30-6pm is OH is not home his is in the oven, I’m not cooking for kids then again for us later.

expatinspain · 28/01/2021 23:20

He'd hate living in Spain. 9pm is considered early for dinner here 😂

DragonMoth · 28/01/2021 23:31

Most people I know don't eat before 6pm.
We generally eat around 6-6:30. Mainly because DP starts work at 6am and he tends to go to bed early-ish.
When he isn't working we are flexible, depending on what we are doing.

Dinkydody · 28/01/2021 23:56

I’m afraid this might be a class thing. Working class ( me) tend to eat much earlier with supper in the evening. Middle to upper class tend to eat later and have afternoon tea. Not all written in stone obviously but I was a live in carer for many years and this seems to be the difference. 😊

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 28/01/2021 23:58

Families who eat dinner at 6pm or earlier, what kind of hours do you all work? I know eating earlier is supposed to be better for you, but I don’t even finish work till 6!

cheapskatemum · 29/01/2021 00:03

At 6pm I'm thinking that I really should start cooking dinner.

Fromthebirdsnest · 29/01/2021 01:48

We have 3 children ages 11/10&5 we don't eat dinner until 6.30/7 sometimes later ...never before 6 though ...id be hungry going to bed if it was earlier ..

YanTanTethera123 · 29/01/2021 03:09

@Happytentoes

Is he a lot older than you 😁Tell him only elderly people eat before 6. It’s generally 6.30 - 7 here.
😄 We eat early simply because it suits us! I seem to have got to my 60’s without realising that eating early= you’re elderly! Surely everyone eats any meal at a time that suits them?!
Tinkerbell456 · 29/01/2021 03:28

We are in our 50’s and never had kids, but anywhere between 7 and 8.30 here. I guess if you’re a young guy in a physical job you come home hungry and a bit earlier (?). Mind you, DH has a physical job and works away 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, 12 hour shifts, seven day week for the fortnight. He’s pretty ready for dinner when at work- 6pm or so.

Tinkerbell456 · 29/01/2021 03:30

@expatinspain. Those Spaniards have life sorted right out I reckon!
