While I agree completely with your second point, we’re still making the ever more prevalent mistake of judging yesterday by today’s standards.

"We" may be making that mistake but I am not. I am talking about something Greer described at the time and that many women who read what she wrote did relate to at the time. Sure, that kind of misogyny was commonplace and most women accepted it even as part of sexual "freedom" but she called it out and even if you didn't recognise it many other women did including myself less than 10 years later - the book was a best seller.

And I am pretty sure she said something about Led Zep specifically though I may have misremembered. If you were there and were never treated disrespectfully then fine, but I am still glad my DH had the looks without the arseholery.

@LadyfromtheBelleEpoque

Have you seen pictures of young Dave Gilmore? (pink Floyd)

Blush

He's bloody gorgeous isn't he! Plus, he's Dave frikkin Gilmore 😍
CaptainMyCaptain · 28/01/2021 12:57

I agree that the late 60s and 70s were a time of great misogyny disguised as 'freedom'. I was there and was abused in this way but didn't realise what was actually happening until much later. It was totally wrong but I was up for it at the time. That is why those of us now in our 60s or 70s can see both sides. Was it right? No. Would we want it to happen to our daughters? No. Things are different now.

Popsy321 · 28/01/2021 13:04

@EleanorTopaz

My pin up was David Coverdale, also lead singer with Deep Purple and latterly with Whitesnake. Loads of cock songs on their albums xx
Gorgeous. Him and Brett Michaels from Poison!
Scout2016 · 28/01/2021 13:13

I have heard / read many times that there was a rivalry between David Coverdale and Robert Plant, peaking around the time of Coverdale bleaching his hair blond. Something about a model they both liked too. Then Jimmy Page did songs with Coverdale...
I was not around at the time, does anyone know if this is all just (rather enjoyable) myth and media fabrication?

Song Remains The Same is a captivating film, hard to take your eye off Plant. There's definately something about a man who can rock an otherwise dubious item of clothing too, as a pp said about Plant in balloony blouses. Kurt Cobain in his cardigan and young Axel Rose in white jeans come to mind.
Yes to Micheal Hutchance.

I suspect Plant would not have considered Coverdale anywhere near good enough to be a rival. However, when Rolf Harris did "Stairway to Heaven"* and someone asked Plant if he'd heard it, he said:

Yes, it's very good. He should join Whitesnake

*I think the universe agreed to forget.

Great choice, it’s a lovely song. I’m having the Floyd’s Grantchester Meadows at my funeral - I’d love to be able to see people’s faces at the end of it!
CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/01/2021 13:43

Ooh! I could consider that.

Currently we have agreed to have Days, Kirsty McColl or The Kinks as appropriate, as a last, childish fuck you to various family members.

But Granny Meadows.... could be a new contender 😁

That's really funny DGRossetti

Rivalry was probably the wrong word, more that Plant was pissed off at being copied.

I think it was more that people were comparing him and Coverdale.

And sorry, Coverdale is not a patch on Plant.

Unless you want to waste the rest of your life arguing Coverdale could have recorded something so beautiful as:

Thanks for that smorgasbord BeautifulStar Grin

Totally agree VinylDetective I can see the 70s/80s for what they were. Yes of course it's good that times have moved on, but have they really? Or is everything just more hidden now and not said.
My mate would've given a limb to sleep with Gary Numan back in the day. She went to every gig and was always at the back stage door.
She was 14. The weren't there taking down dates of birth and I very much doubt they are now.

Yohoheaveho · 28/01/2021 14:20

So disappointing when they get all fat and shabby though
I mean criticise Madonna all you like but at least she's kept her figure

CathyorClaire · 28/01/2021 14:27

I'm surprised Peter Frampton and David Essex haven't yet made the 70's hot list.

There really was something irresistible about men in wild, curly hair back in the day.

My DM had a soft spot for David Essex ... mainly after he played "Che" in "Evita" ...
Scout2016 · 28/01/2021 14:42

No DGRossestti there's no competition at all. Saying there were would be like all those artists who were said to be "the British Elvis". There's only one! Whitesnake songs are serviceable and I do have a soft spot for them, but they are very much Rock music by numbers. And Coverdale was no where near as charismatic or pleasing on the eye.

Scout2016 · 28/01/2021 14:44

@augustusglupe didn't Gary Newman marry a mega fan?
