Aibu to banish dc to the basement

Ok so I’m looking at renting a house . I really like it , it’s on a cul-de-sac and near a park (no garden ) and ok schools . But , two of the bedrooms are effectively in the basement (3 floor house) One has a window but the other doesn’t . It does mean DC can all have their own rooms though whereas two of them currently share . AIBU ?

Are the children old enough to say how they feel about it?

Frozenintime · 26/01/2021 18:07

I would not use a windowless room for a bedroom

purpleme12 · 26/01/2021 18:08

Don't like the windowless room either

AndcalloffChristmas · 26/01/2021 18:09

I wouldn’t put a child in a windowless bedroom!

Candacewasalwaysright · 26/01/2021 18:09

Surely it's illegal to say that a basement room without a window is a bedroom? There's no way out other than the door if there's a serious problem.

Motnight · 26/01/2021 18:11

Don't use a windowless room as a bedroom. I worked in a basement with no natural light for around 4 years on a regular basis and it adversely affected my health.

FelicityPike · 26/01/2021 18:11

No chance would I inflict a windowless room on anyone never mind a child.
Surely that’s a fire escape hazard?

Milkshake7489 · 26/01/2021 18:12

Unless there's an external door, no window means no fire escape.

On that basis alone I wouldn't consider it.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 26/01/2021 18:13

No way. That's a SERIOUS fire hazard.

user1493413286 · 26/01/2021 18:13

That sounds awful; I wouldn’t want to stay in a windowless room in the basement so I definitely wouldn’t make a DC do it

PawPawNoodle · 26/01/2021 18:14

You want to put your child in an unventilated room that never sees the light of day? If you think it's suitable, that can be your bedroom.

parietal · 26/01/2021 18:14

basement room with a window could be fine for a teen, or could even be a master bedroom with the other room as a dressingroom.

windowless room should only be storage or a study (at a pinch), not a bedroom.

Bixs · 26/01/2021 18:14

A windowless room is not a bedroom

Ringshanks · 26/01/2021 18:15

Ah I guess that’s pretty unanimous. I guess that means one gets a box room upstairs with me . I could use the windowless room for some kind of playroom though . Rent is so bloody expensive if you want four beds!

I’d rather have them share than have them downstairs without a window (fire risk). Can’t be good for mental health either.

toocold54 · 26/01/2021 18:26

Being in the basement- absolutely fine but as others have said I would worry about no windows if a fire happened.

One of your DCs could put most of their stuff in there so they have their own space but have their bed in a shared room.
