To be annoyed with people online saying you were stupid to think holidays abroad in 2021 would even happen.

Like lots of people we booked our summer holiday for 2020 to Europe in December 2019 with no idea what was to happen, we could not obviously go last year so agreed to move to 2021 as we had hoped this would be better by then. Now all I read is how stupid people are for thinking holidays abroad would ever happen in 2021 and it is there own fault they are unlikely to happen. Lots of people like us booked ages before COVID was even heard about. TBH we were stupid to not book a package so cant get our money back but I think it is unfair to assume everyone with holidays booked for this summer booked them in the last couple of months.

When ours got cancelled last year we could have moved it to this year but as there was a lot of uncertainty we decided to get our money back instead

mangocoveredlamb · 26/01/2021 10:41

I totally agree, even if you did book it in the last couple of months, foreign travel was allowed last summer so I can understand why people would think it would be this year. Some people are just desperate for a chance to sneer and I think I helps them to feel superior (they’re not)!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 26/01/2021 10:42

I don’t think its stupid

I know loads of people who moved their holidays a year forward...it was worth a punt

toconclude · 26/01/2021 10:42

Calling people 'stupid' in these circs is rude. Unrealistically optimistic, maybe. But I'm a very risk averse person by nature.

MasterBeth · 26/01/2021 10:47

The Prime Minister and the right-wing press were telling us last year “It’ll all be over by Easter/summer/Christmas.” Indeed, many “Covid sceptics” were telling us that it was all over six months ago.

You were not being unreasonable in summer 2020 to think you would be able to go on holiday in 2021.

Notjustanymum · 26/01/2021 10:53

Not stupid to think it might happen, but positive, hopeful, “give-it-a-go” mentality? Sure.
But to be furious and to rail about it publicly when the spread of the pandemic again curtails it? That’s stupid (and I know you’re not saying that, OP, but I think that’s where these kind of comments are coming from).

thirstyformore · 26/01/2021 10:53

I'm still hopeful I can go on my holidays in June, august and September! Testing before we go, test on return and self isolation if necessary? I'm crossing my fingers

pollylocketpickedapocket · 26/01/2021 10:55

Well I’ve holidays booked for august and December and I’m optimistic!

PanamaPattie · 26/01/2021 10:57

I wouldn’t call people stupid - just unrealistic. It’s a bit daft to book a holiday when the future is so uncertain.

MajesticWhine · 26/01/2021 10:58

YANBU. But people especially online are projecting massively and trying to make themselves feel better about their own situation. Far better to take no notice.

letsmakethetea · 26/01/2021 10:59

Well, last year we were able to travel over the summer within the 'travel corridors' so it's not at all unreasonable to think we will be able to do the same this year - especially as this year we have the vaccines, and lockdown has started earlier in the year. But I think some people need an outlet for their difficult feelings and for some reason, they think they will feel better if they try to make strangers on the internet miserable!

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 26/01/2021 10:59

It was a gamble, but many of us still managed to go on holiday LAST summer (2020, between 2 lockdowns!), so no, definitively not stupid. It was risky, but I haven't even given up on booking something for this summer abroad! If there is a 2 weeks isolation period after, better do it in the summer before the kids miss out on school anyway.

People are not judging as such, they are jealous.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 26/01/2021 11:00

I wouldn't worry about what people on line say. No one has a perfect crystal ball and people have different circumstances.

starfish88 · 26/01/2021 11:01

If there is a flexible rescheduling option I don't see the issue. I have a holiday booked for the summer, if it goes ahead then fab and with the vaccination program going so well I won't rule it out, but if I can't go then I can move the date. I feel better with something to hope for and if I have to move it then I have something to hope for just a bit longer away.

katedan · 26/01/2021 11:05

@dementedpixie, sadly that is where we have learnt our lesson as booked flights and villa separately, can get refund for flights but not villa so will now have to go through insurance as could not get a refund for villa last year as not booked as a package 🙁, I bet UK holidays for summer 2021 will get very expensive now.

OrangeBananaFish · 26/01/2021 11:07

I went to France in August 2020, was hoping to go again, still am really, but doubtful if will happen with the new hotel quarantine possibility. It's not stupid to already have a holiday booked for 2021, bit daft to book one now, but even that I wouldn't say was stupid. There is no need for name calling.

LazyName · 26/01/2021 11:10

Yanbu how was anyone to predict holidays would be unlikely this year I think most people thought things would be improving by now!
I’d say people trying to book holidays for summer at the moment are overly optimistic, but if burying their heads in the sand and having this hope helps them get through the current days then I wouldn’t call them stupid, just how some people are trying to cope!

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 26/01/2021 11:13

If you really want to judge someone, people booking holidays for the summer in Cornwall for example, already packed at the best of time...I absolutely love the beach but it won't make a pleasant experience for anyone stuck in the crowds and the traffic.

It's January, no one in this country has a clue what is happening this summer! Even the government doesn't seem to know what is happening next month...

HibernatingTill2030 · 26/01/2021 11:16

We're only in January, and this is a fast moving situation. We don't know what the picture will be like in, say, July or August.
For full disclosure- I haven't booked a holiday. But I'm not going to berate those who do.

Yamashita40 · 26/01/2021 11:24

I know what you mean 😭.

We arranged two 2020 holidays to this summer for May and July (Portugal and Gran Canaria).

One of them is booked through kiwi.com (avoid like the plague) and although Ryanair are offering free rebooking for our flights, because we've booked through a third party they won't give us the booking details so Ryanair can sort it for us. Absolute twats.

Wish we'd taken a full refund in the first place but I was trying to support the travel industry by just rebooking. Won't do that again.

I wouldn't mind quarantining on our return in our own home but I'm not staying in a tiny hotel room with two kids. And paying for it. If I'd known this would be brought into effect there's no way I would have booked for this year.

Lass67 · 26/01/2021 11:37

We actually were idiots...at the start of the pandemic when travel companies were losing money and with everyone wanting refunds we decided we would book a cheap holiday for 2021 in order to support the industry.
We have just cancelled that holiday which was in May, I can’t be arsed with the uncertainty and the running about for tests before during and after. £400 down but didn’t want to pay out the next instalment and no use throwing good money after bad.

I’ll be one of those terrible people descending on the south west coast now...

BlackeyedSusan · 26/01/2021 11:38

I thought we would be through the worst by summer. and that is coming form someone who was expecting second wave, and was building up a covid stash last January.

still a while away yet.

pandarific · 26/01/2021 11:46

I've literally been looking at a campsite in northern France for first week in sept this morning (not booked, just musing over). Am I such a moron then? Confused

Ferry + car + lodge on wooded campsite with lots of space. Cases went down hugely in this last summer... I just want to not be in my bastard house any more and have something nice to look forward to.

YANBU, people are dicks about things like this.

truetuesdays · 26/01/2021 11:47

YANBU

We had vouchers which needed to be used up by the July

What am I supposed to do just let them lapse and lose £600, or book something and at least try to go away and have at least something to look forward to??

BiggerBoat1 · 26/01/2021 11:47

Not stupid, but maybe a bit overly optimistic.
