To report or not

Apolgies if there have been hundreds of these lately but I'm really torn.

I live in a seaside tourist town and earlier today I was stopped by a couple with south east accents asking me for directions to their holiday cottage Hmm

She showed me the booking sheet so that I could see the address and it was an airbnb booking for a week.

Half of me thinks I should mind my own and there could be a good reason for them being there for the week.

The other half of me can't think of what that reason would be. We have one small hospital over whelmed by covid about 20 miles away so if they get ill it's not a good place to be. Add to that I'm pretty sure that the owners of holiday lets were given a hefty sum in order to make up their income they were losing.

Oh I dunno.. what would you do?

Even if I do report, what realistically will be done?!

I would be reporting, as if they have a good reason I am sure they wouldn't mind explaining. But we need people to behave for the numbers to keep down. I will probably get flamed but that's my view.

gobbynorthernbird · 25/01/2021 17:49

To play devil's advocate, there are lots of reasons they might be staying. Visiting a terminally ill family member, or for a funeral (we are going to have to find somewhere for this reason as you can't stay with family at the moment), or having essential work done on their own property.

Eliza72 · 25/01/2021 17:50

They were a lovely couple and so blatant that's what made me think they might have a reason for being there. But now I've thought about it?!?!

Theres not even anything going on, its chilly, everything is closed. The mind boggles...

Also, having booked for a week doesn't mean they're staying for the whole time. They may not have had the choice to make a shorter booking.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 25/01/2021 17:51

I think you should too. I'm sure people will be along to tell you to mind your own business soon but I just everyone would just follow the bloody rules so we can try and get back to some sort of normality. If they have a legitimate reason for being there then it'll be dealt with

WeeDangerousSpike · 25/01/2021 17:51

Report them. If they're here for a permitted reason - like work or househunting - then they'll be fine.
I'm in a tourist area with next to no hospital capacity when we're not in a pandemic. Our local council have a dedicated email address to report things like this to.

AlwaysCheddar · 25/01/2021 17:59

Report it. If they have a reason, no problem.

DinosaurDigestive · 25/01/2021 18:05

I would report it. I agree with previous posters and the fact that the small local hospital is already at capacity is very concerning and they could easily have taken it along with them! Or take it back home with them.

So many people decided to do that where I stay and had such a bad effect on the hospital here which was also already massively struggling. No thought at all for the locals.

This is part of the reason why we're in such a mess!

DinosaurDigestive · 25/01/2021 18:06

It also helped to push the infection rates up here massively by people deciding to do similar!

ElizaLaLa · 25/01/2021 18:07

Mind your own business.

whatismyusername29 · 25/01/2021 18:08

Report it. If there’s a genuine reason they are here then fine they can explain that but if not they should get sent home. It’s not really fully their fault though. It’s partly the fault of hotels, holiday let’s, holiday parks taking bookings. I know hotels etc can take bookings for essential trips but that should be it.

Are you in Cornwall? Sounds like it to me. I am too. It’s really quiet where I am but there seems to be a few stragglers about still.

Barnbop2 · 25/01/2021 18:09

No, I think you should mind your own business too.

AllMyPrettyOnes · 25/01/2021 18:11

Keep your fckin nose out.

“ Add to that I'm pretty sure that the owners of holiday lets were given a hefty sum in order to make up their income they were losing.”

I have an air bnb and wasn’t aware of any sum I could claim, hefty or otherwise.

PanamaPattie · 25/01/2021 18:12

Report. Report. Report.

ilovesooty · 25/01/2021 18:12

I think I'd be inclined to report it too. People aren't supposed to be moving round the country and staying away from home unless for permitted reasons. If they have a permitted reason they'll be able to give it.

cavemums · 25/01/2021 18:13

Report it

nancybotwinbloom · 25/01/2021 18:14

No I wouldn't you don't know what is their reason to be there.

MaelyssQ · 25/01/2021 18:14

Report. If they have a genuine reason for being there, no harm done.

flowers08 · 25/01/2021 18:21

no I bloody wouldnt report it.

Eliza72 · 25/01/2021 18:21

Thanks all, appreciate the responses Smile

Yeah so maybe they're staying there as their adult child has just had a baby. Or staying to be close to a sick relative or are from an area that's flooded?

You don't know any of this so this is why you should keep your nose out.

tttigress · 25/01/2021 18:27

They may actually have a reason for being there....which is none of your business.

It's scary how quickly we turned into East Germany.

devildeepbluesea · 25/01/2021 18:30

No urging to report from my end.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I approve, but I approve even less of people turning on each other.
