The worst spelling mistake ever

mymadpuppy · 24/01/2021 09:51

Someone had wrote to a friend on facebook and couldn't spell "I".....but rather "eye" instead.
Example....."Eye went to the shop" Shock

Now I don't normally care how people spell things, and I know it's none of my business but aibu to declare this the worst spelling mistake ever? It wasn't a typo either because "eye" instead of "I" is constantly used by this person.

OP posts:

‘Should of’ ‘would of’ ‘could of’ are the worst and should carry a prison term

LittleRa · 24/01/2021 11:59

I would assume that “eye” instead of “I” was a trendy local colloquialism, especially if frequently used and in the context of social media. For example, around here I often see “a” for “I” as in “When a went home” as it relates to the local accent. Another one is “ano” for “I know” as in “Ano what you mean”.
I wouldn’t imagine these people use those spellings on their CVs.

Regularsizedrudy · 24/01/2021 12:00

It’s the kind of mistake a someone with dyslexia would make. They know it’s “I” but in the moment the pieces didn’t fall into place in their brain and they went for “eye” instead. You knew what they meant anyway so maybe hold off the judgement? Hmm

MrsMattMurdock · 24/01/2021 12:03

Dyslexia aside the one that winds me up is "I walked passed her".

No you didn't.

partyatthepalace · 24/01/2021 12:05

It’s pretty epic, but just so you know it’s ‘had written’ not ‘had wrote’ - a glaringly obvious grammar error, so you might also want to look at your own written English OP...

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 24/01/2021 12:08

I once saw a take away that offered a free bottle of cock with every large pizza.

partyatthepalace · 24/01/2021 12:09

@mymadpuppy

HAD WROTE' - You're in no position to criticise.* Well yes I am, it's not on the same scale is it. Mine was a mistake, I wouldn't have made the mistake repeatedly. Once can be overlooked.
Well not really OP, ‘had wrote’ is terrible grammar, I wouldn’t expect anyone who got through the education system to use it.

The worst I ever saw was on here, on an innocuous food thread. The poster wrote that she'd be giving the kids chicken nuggets. But her phone betrayed her, and instead of writing "nuggets" wrote a horrific racial slur. Poor poster was mortified and completely mystified as to why her phone had used this word she'd never used herself, while everyone else laughed at her embarrassment.

‘Should of’ ‘would of’ ‘could of’ are the last words of a fool.

Not buying that poster was legit, sorry. There is no auto correct in the world that would have that slur in its library of words. She did it deliberately or she uses the word frequently in texts.
fairyannie · 24/01/2021 12:16

My daughter, who is dyslexic, typed on Facebook after her friend had her first baby - Many Contractions! Hmm

Thelnebriati · 24/01/2021 12:16

You also get that kind of error if you use speech to text.

QuestionableMouse · 24/01/2021 12:16

Eh I'm dyslexic and it's not a mistake I'd make. Not that I'm representing every dyslexic out there. It could be voice to text gone wrong? I've had some really random swaps with voice typing!

Someone had written that...?
beetreebird · 24/01/2021 12:18

I forgive the spelling mistakes that occur when typing fast and not proof reading (auto correct is often the culprit, for example). Eye instead of I is not one of them.

I saw 'imperticular' instead of in 'particular' which made me gasp. But now I see that my phone isn't telling me that's wrong!

Belledan1 · 24/01/2021 12:18

I was typing Virgina Waters quite a few times in a document and accidentally knocked the spell check to change it to Vagina. It at least cheered the person up I was typing the document for.

BigPaperBag · 24/01/2021 12:19

There were some corkers in DH’s ex wife’s divorce paper but I’m not sure if she’s on here so can’t really say them. However, she did randomly start putting ‘x’ as a full stop about two years ago 🤦‍♀️ We were so confused and DH said to her ‘why are you sending me kisses?’ And she very sarcastically informed him that they were full stops....ok then!

HeronLanyon · 24/01/2021 12:21

I frequently text a friend from the northeast ‘wie eye’ and various other misspellings. He’s never commented. I’ve only just really clicked that it is ‘why yes’ and so I’ve started to spell it ‘why aye’. I think he just rolls his ayes at it all. I suspect he would nominate me on this thread.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 24/01/2021 12:22

My sister likes to use "are" instead of "our", I'm not even sure she knows that the word "our" exists as i've never seen her use it and reading her messages is often frustrating.

Although not a spelling mistake and just a case of using the very wrong word, my aunt once asked a staff member in Tesco if they sold sodomy crystals. She meant sodium crystals for her washing machine.

HeronLanyon · 24/01/2021 12:26

‘Sodomy crystals’ that has given me a good long laugh.

In my days as a private prosecutor, I once filled in all my court paperwork and sent a summons out to Derbyshite Magistrates Court 🤣😂

TTCPLEASE · 24/01/2021 12:28

It could be a regional dialect i know someone on my fb from Birmingham area he always writes "ayit" for 'isn't it".. i wouldn't let it consume your day there are worse things going on than spelling or grammar. Just scroll past 😁

Ijustreallywantacat · 24/01/2021 12:47

What exactly do hope to achieve here? You say 'once can be overlooked' when referring to your own poor grammar.

So you have decided that this person can't be overlooked. They must be punished? Shall we parade them around the streets with a dunce hat? Would you like us to call them thick?

I'm an educator. It boils my blood when I see shit like this. I am teaching someone at the moment, who despite our best efforts, can hurt barely spell their own name. When they try to write, it is neat and tidy, but utter nonsense that cannot be phonetically sounded out. They are creative, amazing with their hands, and have an amazing imagination. It breaks my heart to know thar despite all of their amazing qualities, and fantastic potential, that people will still sneer at them throughout their life. That the biggest battle they will have will be with their own self esteem.

I realise I sound sanctimonious here, but I don't care. Spelling means shit. You understood what they meant, so who cares?
