The worst spelling mistake ever

mymadpuppy · 24/01/2021 09:51

Someone had wrote to a friend on facebook and couldn't spell "I".....but rather "eye" instead.
Example....."Eye went to the shop" Shock

Now I don't normally care how people spell things, and I know it's none of my business but aibu to declare this the worst spelling mistake ever? It wasn't a typo either because "eye" instead of "I" is constantly used by this person.

I typed (on an old fashioned typewriter so not easy to correct) Cunty Headquarters when writing to the council once.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/01/2021 10:55

@WhatsYourNameMan. 😂😂😂 of all the people to send that message to.
Did they see the funny side.

SlopesOff · 24/01/2021 11:00

'Bare with me.'
No thanks. I don't even know you.

RandomLondoner · 24/01/2021 11:06

I can generally spell very well, but when I started typing on the internet I was appalled to discover that I would often type a different word to the one I intended, one that was pronounced the same but that was completely the wrong word. I immediately knew when (if) I read what I typed that it was utterly wrong, but it was as if the bit of my brain that was in charge of the vocal cords was overriding the bit that control typing, fetching the wrong word from my internal dictionary, because to the vocal cord part of the brain, there was no difference.

I wonder if "eye" versus "I" is an extreme version of the same kind of brain-fart. Although I don't know how you'd not notice a mistake that glaring.

That's absolutely brilliant!!!
CroutonsAvatar · 24/01/2021 11:08

Prince?

Yokey · 24/01/2021 11:12

I once emailed a guy called Panos in a professional capacity. Guess what that auto-corrected to Blush

Fairydustrust · 24/01/2021 11:14

Nobody knows nothing about spelling and grammar any more. Why don't they learn it like what I did.

Cadent · 24/01/2021 11:14

YABU, it's an in-joke you're not part of OP.

FindHungrySamurai · 24/01/2021 11:17

A colleague called Virginia was frequently on the receiving end of unfortunate autocorrects.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 24/01/2021 11:19

@RandomLondoner

I do that frequently on here. I often type are/our - there's a name for it, but I can't remember it. (And no, I don't mean 'stupidity 🤣.)

PhilCornwall1 · 24/01/2021 11:20
@espressoExpresso I can't beat that!

I did once email my professor Brian and called him Brain. He loved it.
I emailed my colleague (CCing a few others) who is called Gary with the greeting....

Hi Gay,

I always now double check!!

Maves · 24/01/2021 11:22

If you're going to start a thread slagging spelling/grammar....ya know "wrote"

mymadpuppy · 24/01/2021 11:22

I stand corrected with my "wrote". However it's an oversight. I honestly do realise it should have been "written".

But there's no comparison really is there.

I've seen "Chester draws" a number of times on FB marketplace.

I once received an email from an apartment I'd booked in Barcelona to inform me my "shits" were ready for our arrival.

I'd have assumed that the person who wrote the above was dyslexic, so I wouldn't have dreamt of saying anything. But you can't be, knowingly anyway, else you'd never have written this post

'HAD WROTE' - You're in no position to criticise.

I think they should have told the "eye" speller discreetly rather than discretely. Wink

mymadpuppy · 24/01/2021 11:40

Yes, I tend to ignore bad spelling and grammar. I probably often make mistakes myself. But this one stood out. I mean 'I" is so basic isn't it. Surely anyone who's gone through the education system learnt that. I mean, a five year old would know it. I was just a bit shocked really.

Well yes I am, it's not on the same scale is it. Mine was a mistake, I wouldn't have made the mistake repeatedly. Once can be overlooked.

@musmerion - you are right! Oh, the irony. Thank you! 😄

ContessaDiPulpo · 24/01/2021 11:47

Our primary school once sent a letter out to all parents; it began with the immortal words 'Dead parents'.

Now THAT is the worst typo ever.

bluecheesefan · 24/01/2021 11:49

I'm always surprised by the sheer number of people who immediately respond with the dyslexia card on threads like this.

There are undoubtedly some people who are dyslexic. However there are also many people who just can't spell.

I'd say it is as bad, but you're obviously not listening to anyone who is trying to tell you that so will leave it be.
