Did anyone do dry January?

I always said jan was the worst month to ditch the booze.A latecomer to alcohol I didn't drink at all until I was 37.
Then I watched my units as I have an addictive personality.I would have 6 or 7 a week.
Now on furlough and much less stressed I've dropped to 2 units. I'm quite pleased tbh.
Did anyone bother to participate this yr or is that glass of wine the only joy this month.

I'm undecided about February and the rest of the year. I've considered:

  • continuing complete abstinence
  • have a drink only on 'special occasions' - e.g. birthdays
  • have a drink at less frequent intervals, perhaps one night, once a month

My usual or previous drinking habit would be to drink every Friday night and Saturday night without fail. If on holiday from work I'd drink other random nights too!

I'm doing it this year. It's actually improved my sleep and mood hugely.

Alldressedup · 24/01/2021 18:17

This is my first year of doing it. I used to only drink on a weekend but the amount I drank had increased a lot over the last year and I’d put a stone on. I was disgusted with what I was drinking and don’t have much of an ‘off button’ once I start. Something needed to change.

This is the longest I’ve not drank since I was pregnant 10 years ago Shock I massively associate the weekend with a drink and do miss the way it marks the end of my working week. But once I get past that initial 6pm craving I am fine. 3 weeks in and I can see a difference in my skin, my sleep and my energy levels. And I’ve lost half a stone!! I am going to have a drink next Saturday for my birthday so won’t have done the full 31 days but I’m proud of myself and will definitely consider keeping it up. I really don’t need a drink as much as I though I did.

This is my first year of doing it.

Yes, me too. I've tried before and given in on the first weekend after New Year. Not sure what's been different this year!

Alldressedup · 24/01/2021 18:48

@LApprentiSorcier I think what has made the difference this year is the sheer amount I drank over Christmas Shock And my desire to sort myself / my weight out before lockdown ends. It’s something to focus on.

LApprentiSorcier · 24/01/2021 18:51

Yes, definitely the desire to lose some lockdown weight is a good incentive, Alldressedup!

KarensChoppyBob · 24/01/2021 18:54

I failed miserably and am starting my old little sad party of DryFebruary 🙈.

MrsBennetsnerves · 24/01/2021 18:55

I did it last year but not this year. I chose to take a month off in November instead.

Passthebubbly · 24/01/2021 18:57

Proud to say yes! My birthday in 2 weeks so will have a drink then and with then get back on it. Have really enjoyed it after the first week and found some lovely af Prosecco if I get the urge

superram · 24/01/2021 19:05

Yes, first time. Probably won’t do it again. I figured if I can’t do it with no pubs, no socialising then I’d never do it. I haven’t lost weight, slept better or got great skin yet though.....,

Frodont · 24/01/2021 19:06

I'm doing dry January and finding it easy.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/01/2021 19:11

Still here and haven’t caved. Finding it much easier this year, have always failed by week 3. I’ll definitely complete it this year and into the first week of February, no idea why I’m finding it so easy-had a very much wine fuelled 2020 which needed to stop so I’m very pleased.

Same here. Not sure what to do going forward. I've booked a zoom call with a mate for a g and t first week of Feb and I'm thinking I might pretend its a g and t and just have the t!
Spodge · 24/01/2021 19:15

I'm doing it for the first time ever. I am very surprised to find it doesn't bother me at all. This would be different if we we were allowed out to eat but not drinking at home is no problem. I sleep better if I haven't had a drink (knew this already) but it hasn't made me lose weight or be wildly energetic or look better.
