US erasing Women - Janice Turner

feelingquitehopeful · 23/01/2021 07:08

It was totally shocking to me this week as a supporter of the Democrats to see Biden choosing his moment carefully on day one to wipe out women's and girl's rights in the states in one fail swoop. There was no discussion, no consultation. No warning. Just like that he removed centuries of our rights as women.

He will now go down in history as the first President that abolished womenhood and Motherhood and women's rights. I am astonished and horrified and reeling actually, even this morning. I have had a few days to process the shock, but no, I am still reeling.

It is now punishable to describe a woman as a mother for instance, or to stop a man/boy with a penis showering with your pre teen daughter at school.
Prisons can no longer keep women safe, they will now lock up male rapists (Identifying as women, which anyone can now do no questions asked) with trapped female prisoners in cells. Can you imagine being in that position? The horror of being trapped in that situation, as survivor this actually keeps me awake at night.

Men can use lavatories, locker rooms and showers with young girls. It is ILLEGAL to now stop them. It is also illegal to stop a man competing in women's sports, making women's and girls sports now obsolete. What girl is going to outrun a biological male?

We have literally, as a sex been erased completely from the legal framework and with it all of our protections thanks to Biden. Men can still be men, because that doesn't offend anyone apparently - they will not be called 'testicle havers' or 'ejaculators' it will only be women subjected to this. So that says a lot of modern equality and where we are with it today in the US.

Women have been reduced to 'Menstruators' and the highly offensive 'black birthing bodies' if you are describing a mother from the BAME community. That is what we must all be called now.

That is the new healing landscape Biden describes as he cuts out the rights of half the nation.

Janice Turner as always is an absolute legend, and her excellent article 'War of words risks wiping women from our Language' in the Times this morning is outstanding, and covers the grave situation we ALL now face. For anyone thinking it could never happen here, think again.

Read it for yourself:

@MorganKitten

If you read that article, which many of the groups spoken to are also linked to the American far right groups, then I can see why you’re confused.

If you read the actual orders and see the groups worked with you’ll see it’s not as awful and dramatic as that link makes out. At all. The executive order is available online and I’d suggest reading that first. No where in that order is the phrase ‘menstruators' or 'black birthing bodies’ used.

Maybe look at how the National Women’s Law Center views it, they see it as a positive and removing the discrimination Trump put in place. It also states they want to work on all people being able to access health care - no matter their gender, why is that an issue.

I will not be dragged into a discussion/argument about this but really think reading the actual legal article on the White House website is important.

No one has stated that those phrases have been used in the EO but they have been used by charities and NGOs. Woman is not a dirty word and I'm sick of seeing it treated like one.
SqueakyCarrots · 23/01/2021 22:11

I will not be dragged into a discussion/argument about it but I really think you need to read the threads that address what an insidious and abusive thing it is to gas light women into accepting that men can be women.

If you are not going to engage with the content of thread why bother posting. We don’t exist to be talked at.

Helmetbymidnight · 23/01/2021 22:40

No where in that order is the phrase ‘menstruators' or 'black birthing bodies’ used.
nobody claimed that the order said that. so why are you?

suggesting that people read the order, as though no one here already has, is such a patronising assertion.

presumably you are happy to see boys playing in girls teams and taking women's scholarship - dont be shy. say it if thats what you want to see.

feelingquitehopeful · 23/01/2021 22:46

The most frightening thing to me, even the most brutal regime in the world recognises women as women.

There is not a regime in the world that I know of whom does not see that we are our women recognised by our sex.

So lets be very clear. The US, under a President with (questionable) capacity is making the US - the land of the free supposedly - the only country in the whole world, without precedent, that eliminates women and girls. That is why we are struggling to rationalise it, or to even process it.

The US will be the first and only country to eliminate women, including their newly sworn in Vice President.

If that doesn't fucking scare you, I don't know what will.

I was listening to a debate about the collection of census data. A data analyst was arguing that with the removal of biological sex, to be replaced with gender identity, information about women will be lost. She was a woman. A man was arguing the opposite point.
This thread has been really informative. I was already concerned and what I’ve taken from it is that if it concerns us we need to act, whether that is considering our vote, writing to MPs or even marches ( at a time when that might be safe). Our votes should certainly not be taken for granted by any party.

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

This is the link which I posted this morning, but I don't have a share token.

Suzanne Moore in the Daily Telegraph also highlights this issue.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/23/does-joe-biden-really-understand-controversy-behind-executive/

Apologies for not having a share token as I'm reading the print version

fatblackcatspaw · 24/01/2021 00:12

Blackberrycream the Chief Statistician of Scotland says questions about sex should not be asked at all - next year we have the Cencus - if questions about sex are not asked its £63 m down the pan because the data WILL BE USELESS.

SqueakyCarrots · 24/01/2021 00:37

Feeling I’m pretty sure US is not the first to do this. Canada, Australia, Ireland all already have changed their laws similarly. I expect others I’m not aware of also. They may not be word by word the exact laws POTUS has implemented, but in practice it’s the exact same thing. Scotland is spitting distance away too. (Where our national past time has always been wearing skirts and still being MEN) fucking betrayal of my birth land. A country with such a long history of standing up for ourselves with dignity and integrity, we’ve never fought to own other countries or erase other peoples, just maintain peaceful boundaries and our lived experience. Yet here we are erasing our own women and girls. Disgust doesn’t cover my heartbreak at my homeland betraying me this way. Because this is entirely personal, it’s an outright attack on me and my daughters and my sisters, the women clearances. And championed by a fellow Scots woman. I can’t even.

This has already happened (developed) world over. England and Wales are the last stand from what I can see.

Kaza40s · 24/01/2021 00:39

It's such a shame when the majority of people everywhere recognise how wrong this is but choose to remain silent. We are all too busy with work, looking after our families, surviving all of this to challenge anything! They rely on this to push these crazy legislations through. Definitely extremely worrying times.. i worry for my kids & the world they're going to grow up in

FannyCann · 24/01/2021 07:35

The most frightening thing to me, even the most brutal regime in the world recognises women as women.

It's ironic isn't it. A well known trans man who has been in the public eye somewhat has recently been complaining they can't accept a well paid job offer on the Middle East as it wouldn't be safe for them. They literally wouldn't exist.

And yet here the rest of us are. Fighting for our existence to be recognised.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/01/2021 08:05

Squeaky
Your voice has been outstanding on this thread. I already knew most of what you said. But to read it written in such a raw and eloquent way is chilling. I hope you’ve reached a few more women and given them an understanding of how precarious our existence is. I feel so terribly sad for my 12 yo dd. For all girls. They are growing up in this shit storm and as yet understand nothing.

@FannyCann
Ironic. Who are you talking about please?

ZaraTheWonderDog · 24/01/2021 08:14

"It is now punishable to describe a woman as a mother for instance,"

I am still in the process of trying to get my head round the various issues here. Can someone give me a source for this statement of the OP's?

FannyCann · 24/01/2021 08:38

@Mummyoflittledragon
I've pm'd you with a link to the relevant Instagram page. I'm a bit nervous of naming names here.

I second that. Eloquent and chilling.

‘all people being able to access health care - no matter their gender, why is that an issue?’

People with penises wanting to be employed in or use what were previously single sex facilities and services is in conflict with the interests and wishes of many of girls and women employed in or using the healthcare.

PamDenick · 24/01/2021 10:07

Can anyone link the executive order please? I need to read first hand the details...

feelingquitehopeful · 24/01/2021 10:31

Please can you place a link to confirm that Australia and Canada have men using women's locker rooms, lavatories, competing in sports, access to refuges, female prisons and able to perform internal exams on women. I ask, because it is my understanding that Australia have an option to other - on gender but have not incorporated the rest into schools etc. But very happy to be corrected if that has changed.

It is my understanding that the US have gone far further than any other country. And yes in Iran you will have more rights as a woman now, because you will be recognised as such. Incredible.

Got it @FannyCann. Thanks 😊

There’s a lot of information of the defunding of Vancouver rape relief centre on this thread and some on the law in Canada. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3544872-Vancouver-activist-Morgane-Oger-wins-landmark-transgender-rights-decision

ZaraTheWonderDog · 24/01/2021 10:48

The Executive Order is here:

www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation/

I'm finding it hard to square the wording of the order with its allegedly inevitable implications. I'm not trying to be obtuse, but given that it's become such a toxic subject I feel like I'm wading through treacle in trying to separate out feasible from worst-case scenarios.

And I still don't understand where the word 'mother' has been criminalised.

Radyward · 24/01/2021 10:51

He did that day 1
Sent troops to Syria day 2
Whatever you thought of Trump he had no time that ! Nightmare Biden

ZaraTheWonderDog · 24/01/2021 10:53

Is this the contentious sentence?

"Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports".

YouSetTheTone · 24/01/2021 11:12

@ZaraTheWonderDog it is the one that has leapt out at me. It seems utterly astonishing that Biden (and campaigners) will dismiss outright the concerns of girls and women in those same spaces mentioned. Makes me sick to my stomach and I’m truly glad I have three boys. Their safety in bathrooms won’t be compromised. Their access to prizes, sporting achievements and success in the workplace will never be compromised. The language around their sex will never be distorted. They won’t have their genitals chopped off and paraded by medics on social media.
Sickening.
I’ve already written to my MP this week about getting Stonewall out of schools. I’ll be writing again next week about this but I don’t even know where to start really Sad

Biscuitsanddoombar · 24/01/2021 11:18

No children were being denied access to the restroom, the locker room or school sports. What they were being denied access too were the restrooms, locker rooms & sports of the opposite sex

Now they have them and what could possibly go wrong eh? 🤦🏻‍♀️

feelingquitehopeful · 24/01/2021 11:21

If you read the whole thread it goes into great detail of what is wrong with the Executive Order Zara I think you will find your answers are already here.
