Team Call Fail

Earlier this morning I was on a departmental call with key stakeholders for a large project I am peripherally involved with - need to listen in but rarely have to contribute.

Simultaneously I was running an instant message chat which I put a lot of effort in for my immediate team. The response was lacklustre so I was a bit annoyed and made a few comments out loud to my dh who was in the kitchen with me (stayed up until 2 to prepares something team members were asking/"desperate" for.

God knows how but apparently I was unmuted and on camera for the department team catch up! A friend said it appeared I was being bitchy about the call (I 100% was not!). Just coincidental syncing - I wasn't even focused on the call as a close colleague was going over info I was very familiar with.

I am mortified that people would have such a shit impression of me. I have no clue how long I was unmuted! I have been singing along to ABBA (guilty pleasure) but assume I would've been told to shut up (which I would've picked up on).

How awkward is this?

Just carry on as if nothing happened, head high. Grin

Ps I was wrapping presents during a meeting and suddenly realised I hadnt muted but no one said anything.

CryingHelps · 22/01/2021 11:44

Can you send a msg to them apologising and explaining your rant wasn't about them?
You wont be the first or last and at least you weren't naked.

curedragon · 22/01/2021 11:50

I am tempted to msg the person who was talking at the time but at the same time don't want to appear "the lady doth protest too much"

Best left alone. Not sure how you can apologise without drawing attention to the fact that you weren’t interested in your colleague.

‘When you were presenting on the call, I wasn’t taking any notice, instead was talking about some other colleagues to my husband and singing along to Abba’.

JEMISMYNAME · 22/01/2021 13:41

From your description it seems like you weren't paying any attention. If you wouldn't behave like that in an actual meeting face to face then dont do it on teams or zoom. Be respectful. Remember people can see you.

I cooked an entire meal (spag bog if you’re curious) whilst on a conference call but unknowingly unmuted!

Even to the crunching of tin foil to cover my freshly prepped dinner to be heated later.

I heard people stating about noise but just didn’t click until a face to face mtg 3 months later and discovered it was a hot topic in the office as to who the culprit was........needless to say, I never fessed up 🤣

Seriously don’t stress it, these are stressful times and people have done much worse!

Maybe a lesson that trying to multitask on calls and video meetings is a bad idea. Focus on being properly there for the meeting you are in and reschedule the other activities for another time.

DaphneBridgerton · 22/01/2021 14:15

I started opening a package under the table while on a Zoom video call. It was SO LOUD and took me a second to realise I wasn't on mute. I just muted myself and pretended nothing happened.

HavelockVetinari · 22/01/2021 15:20

Haha, don't worry OP, I've been there.
