Do you have ''your chair'', where you always sit, and no one else sits, or do you all sit in different places each day?

In your living room this is.

YANBU = i have my own chair (and no one else sits in it)
YABU = we all swap around and everyone sits anywhere.

Further more (if you like to elaborate) :

  • Do the whole family have their own chair?
  • What happens if you get fed up with 'your' seat. Is it tough luck?
  • Do you have control over moving the furniture round if you get bored or do you have to have a family conference about it?

We have our own chairs. Unwritten rule is that if either of us choose to sit on the sofa then it's a sign that the other should join for a cuddle (usually a bad day or soppy film).

ParkheadParadise · 21/01/2021 15:41

Yes, I have a seat but I don't mind if DH sits on it.
I change the furniture about regularly dh hardly notices.
Growing up we had a 3 seater sofa and 2 chairs.
In total there was 8 of us in the house 6 kids 2 adults.
Me and 2 siblings were always on the floor. As soon as someone moved you could take their seat. If you took my dad's seat he would lift you out of it and throw you on top of whoever was on the sofa. ( it was done in a fun way before anyone says it was child abuse)😂😂

Laiste · 21/01/2021 15:43

I love all the intricacies and unwritten laws.

I always sit in the same place and no one ever sits there instead exept DD4 who is little. DD1 (adult) has her own actual sofa as she is waiting to move out with it. DD2 has DHs seat (where the cats are in the photo) but moves if he comes home. DD3 will not sit anywhere except her own seat and will move her older sisters if they dare to sit there.

DH will only sit elsewhere if one/both of the cats in his his seat Hmm Anyone else gets shifted Grin

That's lovely :)

We have our own chairs at the table in the kitchen. I am outraged if DH leaves his coat over the back of my chair and always move it to his chair.

DDiva · 21/01/2021 15:50

I have my end of the sofa where I always sit ! It has the arm to the right for my phone to rest and is next to the wine rack - I'm sorted !

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/01/2021 15:51

Yup, definitely own chairs here - at the table and in the living room. However we are another household with a cat who doesn't follow the rules, and indeed we bow to her whim and rearrange ourselves accordingly.

AryaStarkWolf · 21/01/2021 15:53

@Laiste

Ah. Pets are a whole separate issue! These are my two seat hoggers hogging away.
awww
Godimabitch · 21/01/2021 15:54

We have our own sides of the sofa. Dog has an armchair but prefers to steal one our spots the second we get up. So we squeeze up.
If I want to switch sides with DH because I need to lean on my other side then I ask, same if he does.

elfin79 · 21/01/2021 15:57

@Laiste

Ah. Pets are a whole separate issue! These are my two seat hoggers hogging away.
My cat sat on "my" chair in the spare room/study (which is where I have my desk). Rather than move her, I did an entire 90 minute online course perched, uncomfortably on the edge of the seat. Well, she is the queen of the house and doesn't she let us know it.

In answer to the original question, we are somewhere between fixed seaters and mixer upers. We have a rotating chair that we sit in to watch TV. If it's turned away from the TV, then we'll swap around so that I'm closer to the wall (and therefore the radiator). Sometimes we sit on the sofa, or DP sits in an armchair.

If there's two of us at the table, we tend to sit in the same seats, but if DP isn't there, I'll sit in "his" seat and if we have guests, the table often gets moved (to accommodate people more easily) so anything can happen!

waltzingparrot · 21/01/2021 16:00

We all have our own seats in the lounge. DS2 sometimes tries to sit in mine because he prefers it bit I hoik him out every time.

Fruitinator · 21/01/2021 16:04

Of course ...why would you not have your own spot! Someone will pop up and say they don't even have their own side of the bed next!

DP and I each have an end of the sofa- our own things on each end such as phone charger, books/magazines etc.

At the table I sit nearest the cooker as I am more likely to be up & down from it. Table is positioned so we get equal radiator access!

If we are in the 'wrong' place we move when the other comes in.

Growing up our Nan lived with us and she had her own spot- even now 3yrs after she died no one sits in her spot, apart from the Whippet...Whippets have their own soft furnishing rules!

Stroller15 · 21/01/2021 16:04

When I was still living at home with my parents, my brother and I would swap on a Sunday at 5pm. The one in charge that week got the good seat, front seat in the car too and got to bath first.

SpiderGwen · 21/01/2021 16:05

My seat is the best seat. Everyone sits in it if I am not there but all move when I come in because of The Law Of Houses*. It's the Mum Seat, and I am the mum.

DH has 2 preferred seats depending on mood. I have a kitchen table chair I use, DH sits on any chair, the weirdo.

The cats get ousted from wherever because they are comfortable literally anywhere. One of them sits on a piece of plastic rather than a cushion, so they don't get to have my seat.

*The house belongs to the most senior resident women. Nan's house, Gran's house, Mum's house, Auntie Peggy's house.

I have my chair and only ever sit in that one. I'm not Sheldon from Big Bang theory though. It's my chair because I bought it specifically to help my bad back and it works.

For those with chronic back ache I highly recommend stresless chairs.

NavyFlask · 21/01/2021 16:12

I voted YANBU, because I do have my own chair, but because it is extremely comfy and lovely, people are always trying to colonise it! Grrrr

Took · 21/01/2021 16:21

We all have our own chairs in the living room and around the dining table.

I have a 2 seater cuddle chair and it's all set up with my hobby stuff (that I can't tell you about as it’s super outing. Cross stitching. It’s cross stitching 😂) but it's the best seat in the house for the TV so I do graciously allow my youngest to sit there sometimes while playing the PS4.

Everyone is very wary of sitting there incase they knock something or lose a needle. I WILL KNOW.

Generally we're mostly relaxed if someone is in someone else's seat and don’t kick people off but will say, "I'm going to want that seat soon'" to give them a chance to finish the tv show or whatever. So generous. Wink

Wendyhause · 21/01/2021 16:25

I am another one who sits wherever the pets allow me to. I can squeeze in next to them if they got there first. Their dirty looks if I have attempted to move them to give me room just isn't worth it. Those who are not pet owners may think this is madness but true cat and dog lovers will understand.
I have my favourite spot on the sofa but it isn't always available to me.
Hmm

Laiste · 21/01/2021 16:26

Fruitinator - Of course ...why would you not have your own spot! Someone will pop up and say they don't even have their own side of the bed next!

Shock The Bed! Surely that would be 100% no swapping.

Another thread for someone to start right there Grin

We have a 3 seater and 2 arm chairs, the cat prefers the chair by the window. We don't use the chairs unless guests have taken the sofa. DH sits in the corner of the sofa and I sit in the middle next to him but when he's not here I sit in the corner and grumble that he gets the best view of the TV and the ottoman to put his legs on. Have since started migrating into the corner when he's here so I end up squidged next to him Grin

We have specific places at the dining table, with DH at the head and I sit to his left. We oddly don't have specific sides of the bed though? Our bedside table bits and bobs just merged together and we usually wake up in entirely different positions than we fell asleep, so it doesn't really matter. I like having him on the side nearest the door so any potential murderers can have him first.

Laiste · 21/01/2021 16:27

So many of these posts are so familiar.

''I'm going to want that seat ...'' the gentle warning to bugger off Grin

I sit wherever there isn't a bloody ddog. Then I get cosy. Then 1 or several ddogs will move onto me as obviously I have the best seat...

Laiste · 21/01/2021 16:31

Phone chargers and bits and bobs kind of dictate who goes where don't they.

'Best Seat' is an angle i haven't covered in my OP. Hmm. I think DH has the best seat. View of TV, middle of room, 2 places to put coffee. In our last house it was me who had the good spot. On the very rare occasions we would argue, no matter what it was about, he would worm that fact in Shock

ILoveToSing · 21/01/2021 16:32

I have my sofa and DH has his sofa. When 2 year old DD is around she goes where she wants and refers to the sofas as Mummy's sofa and Daddy's sofa. The cat will always share my sofa when he is around.

Peanutbutterblood · 21/01/2021 16:34

In the living room during the day we all sit anywhere but once the dds are in bed dh and I sit in the same little sofa with one side each and our feet a mangle mess in the middle

The dining table is a current battle ground. We sit in an L shape, me at the head and dh and dds on the side which inwas happy with but somehow dh has worked his way into the head seat and I hate it. More so because dd2 needs some help and shes sitting on my left which I find annoying as I'm right handed so I end up turning my back to dd1

Need to get my seat back
