If only we're brave enough to be it."

@Lweji

Cycling has a point. Peaceful protesters should not be gased for presidents to cross the street.

As for people protesting the result of a lawfully held election... and demanding that the result is overthrown, peaceful or not, it's still an attempt to prevent the course of a Democratic process.

Well almost similar to remainers wanting another vote isn't it, not accepting the vote that was democratically decided. Plentg of protests taken place
cyclingmad · 24/01/2021 12:58

@minou123

I would be very surprised if the FBI was arresting and charging protesters who were peacefully protesting. Not involved in trespass or going past the barrier.

Do you have any stories or links to stories where people have been arrested who did nothing wrong in the Capitol protest?

I've been on many peaceful protests and on one occasion a brutal attack happened. The police came to my house and asked questions about what I had was doing at the time of the assault, but they didn't arrest or charge me.

When I participate in a protest, I know should a crime happen the police will ask questions. This is perfectly appropriate within the laws.

I obviously missed the bit where those protestors stormed the Houses of Parliament whilst it was in session, carrying guns and shitting all over the Commons Chamber. Oh wait, you qualified it with almost... yes, uncanny Hmm

Protests did take place. Large marches. Reasoned debate.
Questions about what Brexit would look like.
Who would be responsible for overseeing any process.
Having a vote on the final deal.

Because those things hadn't been covered or even thought about with the referendum.

I don't recall people storming Parliament.

I do remember a lot of votes - because people wanted Parliament to have a say on it and a lot of people who wanted Parliament to take back control of our democracy were unhappy when Parliament did take back control of our democracy.

Sorry, just to clarify. You have heard from someone, who knows someone , who has been arrested for peaceful protesting. Did not enter the Capitol, did not pass the barrier or participate in violence?

Because your first comment said people who went to protest peacefully are having the FBI turn up on their doorstep just for being in the area

These are 2 very different statements. I'm unsure of what you mean?

PerkingFaintly · 24/01/2021 13:08

Well almost similar

But... not actually similar.

At the risk of encouraging the account which is only here to disrupt...

Violently invading building attacking police and seeking out individuals while chanting "Hang Mike Pence" NOT SAME AS holding demo outside.

Demanding overthrow of constitutionally mandated handover of power to candidate chosen in free and fair election after court has dealt with any objections NOT SAME AS asking for second vote on more detailed plan for way forwards after first non-mandatory, advisory vote with no constitutional impact, to see if topic was even worth pursuing.

Actually this is a very perceptive post.

Mainly because it's rare to find two such dissimilar things being compared outside of a intelligence test.

I've counted 3 fundamental ways in which they are dissimilar. But then I got bored.

We'll start with how referendums aren't a feature of the UK constitution, which was my first.

Surely if completely innocent people were being arrested for being near DC on 6th Jan, at least one news network would cover it? Or even a "news" network like OAN, or Breitbart?

PerkingFaintly · 24/01/2021 13:20

And though I LOVE the fact the squirrel is helpfully bumping the thread and title,Grin I don't intend to spend the last few pages allowing the squirrel to clog them up with whatever the squirrel decides we'll talk about. (Mostly rehashed nonsense repeats.)

Meanwhile. Impeachment articles being passed to the upper chamber of congress tomorrow; impeachment managers for Trump's trial to be sworn in on Tuesday.

Actual trial not to begin till 9 Feb, to give Trump's defence time to prepare a case. Erm, I'm sure that will be fun for them...

My personal aim when I went on the Remain marches was to storm Parliament and take Jacob Rees Mogg hostage. But my DD, who went with me, said that would be embarrassing so I didn’t do it. I saw lots of other parents and grandparents in the same predicament.
Plus I left the shotgun on the train.

Lweji · 24/01/2021 13:32

The Brexit referendum wasn't binding. Parliament had the choice to upold it or not. Hence the protests.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/01/2021 13:33

Oh Lord: the BBC article says "Only five Republican senators - Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Susan Collins of Maine and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania - are seen as potential defectors. "

Just don't bother mentioning the Collins woman: she is utterly unreliable and not worth counting.

But the actual requirement for conviction is a majority of snators present ...

So 5 defectors, plus a few people missing a flight Hmm could lead to a conviction by default. Yes, there would be some pissed Republican headbangers. But abstaining (sorry "abstaining") senators would have a fig leaf of "I didn't vote to convict".

get their desserts

I was watching The President's Men last night.

All about 'Following the money'.

Looking forward to seeing what happens to Trump and the money trails over the next few months.

Yes, I agree that Collins of Maine has a long track record of shouting that she's not going to support the orange XPUS and then supporting him.

She's reliably unreliable, and should just be ignored.
