to think i will never get a council house?

been on the waiting list 2 years - showing 30 in bidding systems
DV occurred up to September 2020 when i forced my exp out the house.
rent is 600 and i cannot afford it now there’s just me and DS.
Landlord is shit, I have no heating, riddled with damp and window hanging out of pane. It’s a 3rd floor flat. HSA (housing standards authority) keep saying they’re contacting my landlord and he’s sending someone round, they never come.
PTSD is kicking in and i can’t go in my bedroom without vomiting and panicking as that’s where the abuse occurred
poor credit and no guarantor and no way i can afford private rent as average is 600-700 in my area and i need support
severe depression, OCD and anxiety
im getting 1140 in UC and im in arrears with everything, DHP was rejected and can’t appeal

Every single time when I phone up I get “keep bidding you’re moving up the list” yet I’m really not. I can’t take anymore of this, I hate my life and I don’t think I have a future at all.

Golden lottery ticket? Are you for real.
Do you think I want to be in this position? I rely on that job for extra money. And I don’t know where the idea of me not wanting to get my hands dirty comes in considering I’ve been a cleaner, home help and a bar maid whilst in education since I was 16.

My lack of credit and guarantor don’t help me when applying for a private tenancy.

I’m going to ask MN to take this thread down. I’m already depressed enough.

Please contact student services and reach out to them for support to get you into the position to restart in Autumn.

I can only imagine how awful it is living in a freezing cold, damp, mouldy flat with no money having been abused by your ex.

If it helps start a new thread to get support for a 5 pronged approach in taking your very valid complaints forward AND explore other options to get suitable decent accommodation.

Thanks

I haven't read the full thread but I would urge you to contact your local councillor. I've lost count of the number of times someone has found appropriate housing after engaging them. Wrong perhaps but it does work. I'm on track for a new build 4 bed HA property although there are only 3 of us. I got my councillor on board. I explained I need overnight care for my children 2-3 times a week so I need to provide that person a room of their own. My oldest has ASD so won't sleep anywhere other than his own bed or with me there so he can't stay at grandparents overnight. My children need their own bedrooms due to the night time care issues from ASD. I got my evidence, telephoned my housing officer, built up a positive working relationship with her so I could explain the details that wouldn't pass an algorithm. My councillor has been very helpful. His vote depends on propel like me!

@RandomMess I know it looks like I haven’t replied sorry

I phoned them yesterday but no answer, then I phoned the general line and he was like “yeah no one knows where they are just send them an email and they’ll get back to you Monday” 🤣🤣🤣

OP posts:
RandomMess · 23/01/2021 17:37

Was that student support services??

TBH the ones at the uni where I work are on their knees!! They should reply to emails on Monday, don't give up on them but accept you may have to ring a few times Mon-Fri and send up follow up emails etc.

UnityUnited · 23/01/2021 17:38

This situation needs to come to the attention of the VC of ManMet University and the Mayor of Manchester.

bellver888 · 23/01/2021 17:38

@waynesbluestreak they are so black and white aren’t they with issues!
It shouldn’t even need to be said that kids who require night care can’t share a room! I hope you get the house x

bellver888 · 23/01/2021 17:40

@RandomMess yeah the general line, they’re dead on the ball usually but he said half are working from home and half are isolating and the calls are still going through to those not at work and just not connecting, they must be so busy I feel sorry for them it sounds like it’s just crisis calls all the time

OP posts:
bellver888 · 23/01/2021 17:40

I’m gonna email Andy burnham if I get nowhere with my complaint

I quite fancy him as well so maybe that’ll get me some points

OP, if there's a chance to move in with your mum or another family member I would just do it. Yes it will screw up your chances of getting social housing, but you could be stuck for years in that horrible flat waiting to be housed.

To me it sounds like you're at the end of your rope and just need to get out of there.

bellver888 · 26/01/2021 10:28

Slightly annoying update.

I’ve sent an email to my local MP and he’s getting in touch with the council for me which is kind of him.
Student Accommodation line at MMU were not really wanting to discuss the family rooms with me and I will only be eligible after 4 weeks of study.
Not heard anything back from the private rented I applied for.
Housing Standards came round yesterday took pictures of my broken window, and the radiator that’s propped up behind a coffee table as it’s hanging off the wall, then told me she’d text my landlord. Landlord “sent someone round” and no one came. Phoned Housing standards back and told her I’m absolutely sick of being made to look a liar and I don’t understand why my child’s health is just not even counted. Large patch of damp on living room ceiling has appeared as landlord had painted over it. Housing standards told me they’ll show me how to work the radiators.
WIBU to slap her if she comes round?

On a happier note I have an appointment with my GP today as I have started to have suicidal thoughts, I’d never do it because of DS but my doctors said it’s a concern still. Shame I can’t just die of natural causes like a heart attack so I get some space from thinking about 🏠

I’m really not surprised you’re so low. I’m angry on your behalf at the number of times the system has passed you over. It’s an absolute disgrace and our country needs to be doing better. You’re trying, and we can all see that. I really hope your MP can help sort this out, you need someone high up rooting for you right now. You deserve better.

Lightsabre · 26/01/2021 11:09

Your situation sounds very tough and it seems you're at the end of your tether. Carry on doing what you are doing ie; badgering all and sundry about the state of your flat. If they pressure the landlord enough, he might even serve notice and then you'll get higher priority (although homelessness would be a nightmare too). If the worst comes to the worse, could you just get the window repaired yourself/damp seem to (have you got or can borrow or do extra work to get the money together?). Being in position 20 for bidding is quite high. Depending on the situation where you are, I would expect you to be rehoused in the next 12-18 months.

I think it would be a false economy to give up on your social work course. Once qualified, you will be guaranteed a job and it's easy to climb the career ladder as there are so many vacancies. In five years you could be on £40k +.

bellver888 · 26/01/2021 11:13

I’m coming up 48-65 on properties now. 20 was an anomaly. I can’t afford to fix my window and i can’t borrow the money as it’d just cripple me paying it back. I can’t see myself ever being rehoused tbh.

OP posts:
Lightsabre · 26/01/2021 11:32

Not ideal but could you put a shout out on social media for someone in Manchester to fix it (and offer a few bob as a gesture?).

bellver888 · 26/01/2021 11:49

i can’t afford that, plus he won’t knock it off my rent either as i asked

OP posts:
RandomMess · 26/01/2021 12:24

Is housing standards coming back around to show you how the non-operational heating works?? I do hope so!!!

bellver888 · 26/01/2021 12:32

Yeah she’s coming to show me how the completely fucked radiator turns on, wonder how the one that’s hanging off my wall will cope.

I’m 80 on a 2 bedroom flat I applied for and 197 on a house. What a fucking joyous day.

OP posts:
bellver888 · 27/01/2021 00:18

Housing standards admitted radiators are fucked, landlord “sending someone”

I’ve also a bid on the 2 bedroom properties available, there were 3 of them

I hold out 0 hope. However we do what we can

It's very hard to get a social housing house these day unfortunately.

I m always in the top 10 but never get selected. A few times I have been first but the house just gets pulled so I assume it's for emergency housing
