To name my son after my childhood teddy bear

I’m currently pregnant with DS2 and my DP realllly likes a certain name, it’s a traditional boys name, think similar to Arthur or George. I also like the name a lot but what puts me off is it’s the name of my childhood teddy bear who I still sleep with occasionally... ok, more than occasionally...

Whether I should sleep with a teddy is a different argument altogether, but I was very attached to this teddy bear as a kid and whenever I hear this name I immediately associate it with the teddy. So WIBU to give my DS that name too? It’s a very nice name and my DP loves it.

I’ve just read this back and I sound crackers but I really can’t see the wood for the trees here!

I think it is fine.

WanderingMilly · 19/01/2021 19:05

It's fine, go for it. And no-one needs to know it's the name of your teddy bear....

reefedsail · 19/01/2021 19:06

I think it's fine too. You'll soon associate the name with DS more once he is here. Why don't you give DS the bear, be a nice story to tell him.

Ponoka7 · 19/01/2021 19:06

Once your Son is here, the name will take over as his name. I give my pets people names and at first its seemed odd to be calling a baby relative that, but after a while it fades.

tillytoodles1 · 19/01/2021 19:07

Maybe a cat or dog, but not a child.

Scarby9 · 19/01/2021 19:07

One of my bestest teddies was Edward - no problem naming a child after him.
Percy Panda - not so much.

MMMarmite · 19/01/2021 19:08

Clearly your son should be named Arthur Junior, and teddy becomes Arthur Senior.

It’s absolutely fine.

reefedsail · 19/01/2021 19:08

The bear can just take 'bear' as his double-barrel. Frederick-bear, or whatever!

Caesious · 19/01/2021 19:11

My husband named his second child (my DSS) Joseph which was the name of his childhood teddy. He’d always loved the name and it’s never been a problem. I’d say go for it if you both love it!

Lindy2 · 19/01/2021 19:13

A song as it's an actual name it will be fine.

Henry, Charles etc absolutely fine.

Fluffy, BooBoo etc absolutely not fine.

As a previous poster said just add Bear to the end if your teddy's name. How often do you actually call your toy bear , out loud, by its name anyway?

EdithWeston · 19/01/2021 19:14

Giving your DS a name you've loved since your childhood?

Lovely idea

SparkyBlue · 19/01/2021 19:15

My daughter is called after a character in my husband's favourite childhood cartoon

SendARavenToRiverRun · 19/01/2021 19:17

My bear is called Rupert. It would have been up there as a choice if we'd have had boys. Go for it.

LowlandLucky · 19/01/2021 19:24

Sorry pressed YABU by mistake, I think it is a lovely thing to do. My friends child has the same name as her childhood cat.

Bizawit · 19/01/2021 19:26

I think the name would be fine fine. Still sleeping with your childhood teddy is weird AF.

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 19/01/2021 19:27

Our 12 week old DS has the same name as our first cat... 😆

ElfAndSafetyBored · 19/01/2021 19:28

My childhood teddy has the same name as my son but I called them both after my grandad 😀

Neighneigh · 19/01/2021 19:28

I think it's a lovely idea. I can't do it because my bear was called Marmalade

cautiouscovidity · 19/01/2021 19:33

If your teddy has a typical boy name like Edward, Freddy, Rupert etc. then yes it's fine. Not many people will know your teddy's name anyway.
If he's called Fluffball, Cuddles or Pooh... maybe not.

Floopyandtired · 19/01/2021 19:36

Ok so the name is Henry and based on what most posters here have said I am seeing it in a new light, it’s going to the top of the list, thanks all 😊

My daughter is named after my sister's childhood bear, and it's a really poncy name as well!

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 19/01/2021 19:38

'Course it's fine.

It's quite sweet actually. Smile

ApplestheHare · 19/01/2021 19:39

This is lovely, please name your son after the teddy bear.

Lucieintheskye · 19/01/2021 19:45

I'd veto it, but then I jokingly mentioned my teddy's name when reeling off name suggestions for a friends baby, and she actually named him it.
It certainly isn't a normal name! It's along the lines of a cliche dog name...
