To name my son after my childhood teddy bear

I’m currently pregnant with DS2 and my DP realllly likes a certain name, it’s a traditional boys name, think similar to Arthur or George. I also like the name a lot but what puts me off is it’s the name of my childhood teddy bear who I still sleep with occasionally... ok, more than occasionally...

Whether I should sleep with a teddy is a different argument altogether, but I was very attached to this teddy bear as a kid and whenever I hear this name I immediately associate it with the teddy. So WIBU to give my DS that name too? It’s a very nice name and my DP loves it.

I’ve just read this back and I sound crackers but I really can’t see the wood for the trees here!

Ah OK, I thought if were something like Squeaky Boo-boo I would have said a big NO.

onyourway · 19/01/2021 20:53

My dd's middle name is after a toy mouse I had as a child Smile

Cissyandflora · 19/01/2021 20:53

@Lucieintheskye

I'd veto it, but then I jokingly mentioned my teddy's name when reeling off name suggestions for a friends baby, and she actually named him it. It certainly isn't a normal name! It's along the lines of a cliche dog name...
It’s Rex
SonicTheSorryRabbit · 19/01/2021 20:56

@Lucieintheskye. I'm guessing Rufus.

Probably not Fido.

tttigress · 19/01/2021 20:57

Mr Cuddles, a great name for a baby ;)

Seriously, I think it's a nice idea, assuming "relatively" normal

Lucieintheskye · 19/01/2021 20:59

It's Patch 👀

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/01/2021 21:00

I have a friend who wanted a daughter especially so she could call her Alice after her beloved childhood Alsatian. Also she wanted to have a daughter before her sister, who wanted to do the same thing.

SonicTheSorryRabbit · 19/01/2021 21:02

@Lucieintheskye. That's quite...out there. Very brave choice.

Fieldofyellowflowers · 19/01/2021 21:04

@Bizawit

That was totally unnecessary and uncalled for. It is not weird to sleep with a teddy. It is not as uncommon as you might think.

Catty1720 · 19/01/2021 21:04

A lovely name with a lovely connection and meaning for you

MoreMorelos · 19/01/2021 21:07

@Lindy2

A song as it's an actual name it will be fine.

Henry, Charles etc absolutely fine.

Fluffy, BooBoo etc absolutely not fine.

As a previous poster said just add Bear to the end if your teddy's name. How often do you actually call your toy bear , out loud, by its name anyway?

This made me laugh a little too much 😂
Aspiringmatriarch · 19/01/2021 21:10

Yes, go for it. Lovely association. Smile

waydownwego · 19/01/2021 21:21

Better than naming him after the cat.

(Henry "Indiana" Jones.)

Tana433 · 19/01/2021 21:31

My doll when i was little was called Katie Marie and when i had my first daughter that is exactly what i called her. She loves hearing the story about how i named her after my favourite toy growing up. She is 22 yr old now.

SusannahSophia · 19/01/2021 21:45

My niece’s DS is named after he childhood dog, Ben and Benjie. I liked the name Ben as well, but avoided it due to said dog!

Hugoslavia · 19/01/2021 22:04

Is it Paddington?

grandmasterstitch · 19/01/2021 22:08

I have a hot water bottle cover that I've had since I was 3 called Eric. We called DS Eric. Names can be special for lots of reasons. It was special enough for 3 year old me to call my teddy it and it was still special enough for my son 25 years later

VeryQuaintIrene · 19/01/2021 22:18

So disppointed that your bear isn't called Pooh.

Alice0901 · 19/01/2021 22:18

My grandma was given a teddy bear by my grandpa called Barnaby. I now have the bear as both have passed away.
I have a DD but if I’d had a DS I wanted to call him
Barnaby (Barney for short)

NextWinter · 19/01/2021 22:21

@TheSoapyFrog

Do it. I'm sure your teddy will be dead chuffed.
Oh he will be, this really made me Smile
cunningartificer · 19/01/2021 22:28

My Teddy has always had the surname “Bear”; I must have been a very formal child. Lucky, as my nephew is named after him and it avoids confusion😉

Bizawit · 20/01/2021 10:13

Lovely name OP xx

TroysMammy · 20/01/2021 11:19

If you've named your DD after a childhood doll is it Tiny Tears or is it hyphenated?

MsSquiz · 20/01/2021 11:20

I named my DD Charlotte, after the spider in Charlotte's Web, so why not?

TheGracefulwhale · 20/01/2021 11:30

I could have written this! I have a Henry elephant which is also a family name. If dc2 had been a boy, dh wanted to call it Henry. I actually said no as I felt I didn't want to name them the same. Dh at one point said to me "I mean, stop telling people the name of your stuffed elephant at 25byears old and we'll be alright"! Which made me laugh!
Dc2 turned out to be a girl but personally I wouldn't have used it because I like to keep the two separate, one provides me comfort, the other would be my child who, although comforting, when winding me up I would like to turn to my comfort without being reminded of the source of frustration or upset in that moment
