To name my son after my childhood teddy bear

I’m currently pregnant with DS2 and my DP realllly likes a certain name, it’s a traditional boys name, think similar to Arthur or George. I also like the name a lot but what puts me off is it’s the name of my childhood teddy bear who I still sleep with occasionally... ok, more than occasionally...

Whether I should sleep with a teddy is a different argument altogether, but I was very attached to this teddy bear as a kid and whenever I hear this name I immediately associate it with the teddy. So WIBU to give my DS that name too? It’s a very nice name and my DP loves it.

I’ve just read this back and I sound crackers but I really can’t see the wood for the trees here!

Oh just seen it's Henry, I love that name sorry, no veto, no veto!! I was expecting a weirder one Blush

Fatladyslim · 19/01/2021 19:47

I've just realised my DS is also named after my childhood Teddy Blush

OooErrThor · 19/01/2021 19:47

@SparkyBlue is it Penfold WinkGrin

I think it's a lovely idea OP.

EileenGC · 19/01/2021 19:50

Henry is fine. Mine is called Little-Bear (in another language) otherwise I'd be inclined to use it too for a future child Grin

Fourmoos · 19/01/2021 19:50

And please don’t stop sleeping with your bear, we all need comfort where we can find it. Henry was my dad’s name, great name.

TodgerStrunk · 19/01/2021 19:54

My DS is named after my childhood dog. Which caused no one an issue except for my dad, who pointed at the current dog, and said "isn't he going to get confused?" not realising the dog wasn't immortal. Or reincarnated.

I like the Henry Sr and Henry Jr idea. The only issue i can see is if Human Henry wishes to acquire Teddy Henry as they have the same name.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 19/01/2021 19:55

I named my first DD after the first puppy I had, when I was six years old. She was a wonderful puppy, I love the name, and my DD is wonderful too. (DD does not resemble my puppy at all.)Grin

TroysMammy · 19/01/2021 19:56

Ted fine. Chi Chi and Honeyball not so much.

TheQueef · 19/01/2021 19:56

Will it be as cute when he's 45?

HibernatingTill2030 · 19/01/2021 19:59

As long as it's a name, fine. My childhood teddies were named things like Monkey, Cat and Rabbit (I obviously had no imagination!), but Edward/John/Keith etc are probably OK.

spongedog · 19/01/2021 20:11

My DC was named after a childhood pet. DC was slightly offended when young, but not now. We have now adopted more of the childhood pet and they get the obsession and the love. Truthfully I think their first born will also be named after a childhood pet.

And yes - to the very sensible poster - the name will be suitable even when they are 45!

SparkyBlue · 19/01/2021 20:13

@OooErrThor no not even similar lol.

BlueBoar · 19/01/2021 20:16

Well my son would have been called Doctor on that basis so I’m glad I didn’t see this thread eleven years ago!

NextWinter · 19/01/2021 20:16

@MMMarmite

Clearly your son should be named Arthur Junior, and teddy becomes Arthur Senior.

Wink

I was going to say no, but this is a lovely idea. Henry Senior and Henry Bear love it.

And it is not weird AF to still sleep with bear.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/01/2021 20:18

I had a doll with DS's name. I liked the name and it was a family name.
It then became more significant due to bereavement. I can remember saying to my school friends that I would name a son with that name.

It happened to be DH's favourite name, so the naming a boy conversation was very short!

No shame in having a teddy either. I've got some company next to me at the moment. My friend's daughter has the same name Grin

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 19/01/2021 20:19

It's a lovely idea and you definitely have to pass the bear to your DS when the time is right x

@Floopyandtired HENRY is a fooking brilliant name too! Grin Love it!

Toasty280 · 19/01/2021 20:29

My eldest son's middle name is the name of my favourite teddy, it's quite a tradition name, so it's not outrageous like Percy panda. The teddies name is on his tag and DS has it in his room so he knows where the name is from (but it's not his favourite teddy). DS is in late teens

TheSoapyFrog · 19/01/2021 20:30

Do it. I'm sure your teddy will be dead chuffed.

BlueSuffragette · 19/01/2021 20:37

Love the idea.

Changeismyname · 19/01/2021 20:38

Teddy?

SonicTheSorryRabbit · 19/01/2021 20:38

Give your son the name. Rename the teddy.

Maybe you didn't look carefully enough when you got teddy and teddy is actually a Henrietta.

Or maybe teddy is actually from another country and you've been disregarding his cultural identity up till now. So he could be:
Henri (French)
Heinrich (German)
Henrik (Dutch)
Enrique (Spanish)
Jindrich (Czech)
Errikos (Greek)
Enrico (Italian)
Eanraig (Scottish Gaelic)

ForeverBubblegum · 19/01/2021 20:43

As long as your teddy wasn't called Mr Fluffkins or similar, it's fine. People name kids after family members or even after themselves withoutit causing problems. If anything your honouring teddy as an important member of your family.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 19/01/2021 20:45

My ds is named after my childhood friend's dog 😂 Go for it.
