After reading another thread it got me thinking about drug addiction. So people who take drugs are obviously addicted and have a lot of complications often childhood related.

My question is the people who supply the drugs to them. Do you view them as bad people? Or do you them as a possible product of their environment also?.

So your question is “are drug dealers bad people”?!

MrsHusky · 19/01/2021 10:02

both, you can be a product of your environment and STILL make the right choices not to be a complete cunt and sell illegal drugs to people.

Notmoreuodates5 · 19/01/2021 10:39

Yes that is my question you came across a bit hostile. @Xmasgrump bit rude as I have said this was inspired by another thread I read.

@MrsHusky that’s interesting because there’s many people in high flying jobs and they are taking the drugs. Dealers may argue if there wasn’t a market they wouldn’t be selling..

Everybody is a product of their environment but we can still make choices

cherrypie111 · 19/01/2021 10:46

I see them both as bad as each other

I don't get the current theme of placing the vast majority of blame and shame on the dealers over the customers.

If there were no customers there would be no dealers. Same applies to the ivory trade, equal blame should be on those creating the demand as the ones killing to supply.

LochJessMonster · 19/01/2021 10:53

A lot of people have really really shitty upbringings and don’t do or deal drugs.

Hate people that use that as an excuse for being weak.

Drug dealers know the devastation they cause, use people to traffic the drug, coerce young people into selling it (thus making them dealers), and are usually involved with other criminal activity too.

So yes, drug dealers are bad people...

HforHavana · 19/01/2021 10:53

You could apply this to a allot of things though.
Are shops bad for supplying alcohol to alcoholics? Are bookies bad for providing betting to gambling addicts?

Yes drugs are illegal, but alcohol and gambling can have the same, if not worse outcomes than drugs, and we don't view people selling them as bad people.

Notmoreuodates5 · 19/01/2021 11:00

@HforHavana exactly.

I think your view is closed minded. It’s not as black and white as that. Do you think the same about the prem babies born needing drugs... as the mother was an addict.

thepeopleversuswork · 19/01/2021 11:04

I think it depends. Obviously supplying illegal drugs is a morally questionable thing to do but there are mitigating circumstances.

I would take a much dimmer view of someone who wholesales cocaine to wealthy young people in the UK than I would of a teen soldier from a Brazilian favela who is selling drugs on the orders of a gang leader to whom his dad is in debt, for example.

By the way I'd take issue with your claim that all people who take drugs are "obviously addicted". There are plenty of people who take drugs recreationally but who aren't addicted: just as plenty of people use alcohol recreationally without being alcoholics. Not necessarily recommending it but its not quite that black and white.

EmergencyHydrangea · 19/01/2021 11:05

Do I think prem babies can make choices? What kind of ridiculous question is that? Your question was specifically about people who sell drugs. I'm pretty sure prem babies don't do that

unmarkedbythat · 19/01/2021 11:07

'Recreational' (as opposed to medicinal) drug use is mostly a very harmful problem because of the way society approaches it. Most of my anger is directed at successive governments who enact policies based more on looking 'tough on drugs' to the pious ignorant than on actually reducing harm.

2020iscancelled · 19/01/2021 11:11

There is no right / wrong / good / bad box to put people.

Drug addicts can be good people at heart who are deeply flawed through a multitude of reasons, combine this with circumstance and environment and you could end up with a really nasty addict on your hands. It doesn’t mean they are bad to the core.

Surely the same has to be said for dealers, I knew many many many dealers when I was growing up. They were just kids in hindsight who through environment, ended up in positions of selling drugs for other people. They weren’t bad to the core either and most have moved on and grown up and would consider a couple of pints a heavy night.

It is arguable that dealers are worst than addicts of course, but lots of dealers just fall into those roles over time. Or they are taken advantage of. Their level of choice reduces over time, to the point where you can’t really walk away because you are so entrenched.

If you’re talking about those higher up the chain, that’s a different story. And you can’t compare say a drug ring from South America or Afghanistan using our moral code - because their lives and situations are totally different. A lot of it comes from necessity to survive doesn’t it.

Notmoreuodates5 · 19/01/2021 11:26

@thepeopleversuswork yes they are I meant things that the heavy things not weed.

@2020iscancelled that is my view too. I don’t believe all drug dealers are bad people.
