To ask if you felt your dog knew something was happening when you were pregnant?

I am now very nearly full term and my dog just will not leave my side. He's always been pretty close to me out of everyone but the past couple of weeks it's very much more noticeable.

He follows me round, will cry if I'm out of the room and he can't get to me, will often rest his head on my bump in the evenings etc... He even gets up and stands next to us and watches intently if DH touches my bump at the moment. He's absolutely not aggressive in any way and has never growled or barked at anyone but you can tell he's watching and making sure he's not doing anything untoward if that makes sense?

Did anyone else feel their dog acted more protectively during pregnancy?

No. But she did get a shock when she was cuddled up and my lap and DS kicked her from inside my womb Grin she jumped a mile and looked horrified!

Grin yes our DDog has been kicked in the head a few times now! He doesn't seem to mind though, he still won't budge!

My ddog became much more denfensive of the house when I was pregnant. Noticeably so. Not in a bad way- just barked much more at the doorbell etc.

Calmed down after I gave birth.

The medical detection dogs of Milton Keynes are trained to puck up signs when an owner is about to go into a diabetic coma
They are aware of bodily changes so quite feasible they detect pregnancy changes

I have heard of this, think it's a thing.

As a pp said dogs can be trained to notice biological changes in human bodies, some pick up on seizures beginning, others can detect cancer...

You're dog sounds lovely :)

@GreenSlide - that made me laugh!

My dog loved to sit on my bump! In the later stages it looked hilarious. He was never a lap dog before that so I'm convinced he knew.

One of mine acted no different (Labrador).

The other dog (large shepherd type rescue) started coming up on the sofa next to me for a cuddle and laid his head on my bump from about 32 weeks, when he never used to. When baby came he was very defensive of the baby straight away I.e. will bark and guard the cot if someone comes to the door.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 19/01/2021 04:46

Yup mine started following me everywhere months ago. He even comes to the bathroom while I'm on the toilet and tries to sit in between my legs.
His bed is in the corner of the room next to my side of the bed, bit he usually jut lies on the floor next to me now. Which is a pitawhen I'm up for the toilet every hour and he's right under my feet.
He does the same when I'm sitting on the couch, but he always did that. I just can't get into the position I used to sit in for himbto lie o me anymore 😂 so he lies his head on the bump.

We don’t have dogs but have cats and they knew! The were all over me like hot water bottles, meowing when ever I left the room, always touching me in one way or the other - since baby was born our female cat can’t be bothered with me anymore but our male one will now come and try to snuggle up between my legs!! Never did it before.

The most interesting for me though was how they knew I was going to miscarry. Each time it happened our girl would dig into my tummy the day before and howl, and our boy growled and wouldn’t come anywhere near me. The first time we didn’t connect it together but the other times we did and it was heartbreaking.

I have 3Ddogs - one was completely oblivious, but the other 2 knew. One became very clingy throughout. They all love DS.

Peanutbutterblood · 19/01/2021 06:51

We had 3 collies when I was pg with dd, before I had a huge bump I was still working safely in the sheep pens and one of the dogs became so protective of me. The two bitches acted totally normal but the dog stayed right at my side and would not let a single ewe come anywhere near me

Parkandride · 19/01/2021 06:58

That's very sweet, mine doesn't give a shit. He's rubbish with emotions too, I thought they're meant to be supportive but if I ever have a cry he fake sleeps until I'm done Hmm

Before I knew I was pregnant my dog kept sniffing around my stomach. She'd put her paw on my thighs and spend as long as I'd let her sniffing it. She never did it before and hasn't since.
