I don't think it's unreassonable really and I don't think it's wrong to post about such matters. There are plenty of people on MN who aren't short of money (as well as many who are) and people are always discussing their waitrose deliveries and new kitchens and a nice coat they want to buy. Amd what about people who smoke or buy a starbucks coffee every day, have a glass or two of wine in the evening (like me) or like to go clubbing? they will get through £525 on non-essentials pretty fast. I don't think there's anything wrong with spending your own money on something quality that will last and that you'll use every day and treasure.

righty, i have joked my way through this thread, but seriously.smeeinit, it is your money to chose to spend how you wish. so go for it. end of

we can all get preachey and say "o the cost of that daily starbucks coffee/daily sandwich/mobile phone/lippy/gucci watch could irrigate the village/provide medical treatment for X and Y. well it probably could.

truth is disposable income - is just that disposable and obviously the amount will vary between indoviduals. But fact is it is smeeinit money, up to her. smeeinit does not personally have to justify her exependitures. same as i dont when i am lingering at clinique counter

PS Smeeinit - you could still get a good copy in lewisham

Journey · 29/10/2007 12:53

Smeeinit - If you can afford it go ahead and buy the watch and the license plate. I think they will make you smile when you look at them in the future because they'll remind you of a good/happy time (or whatever the personal meaning is to you).

One little think though enjoy the actual buying process of the items. I just hope you will be excited (and not feeling guilty because of what some MNs have said).

You've worked hard. You deserve it.

iota · 29/10/2007 13:15

Buy them both

I have a Gucci watch and a personal plate and I like them and I am glad have them

My dh has a Tag that he never wears - oh well something to pass on to the eldest ds then

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 13:24

I can't afford £525 on a watch, but it doesn't bother me if someone else spends it

I find it bizarre that people get upset by that.

I wouldn't spend it on that watch though But that is all a personal preference thing!!!

You've worked hard to earn the money, spend it however YOU want to. I would be spending it on new glasses and bras

bubblepop · 29/10/2007 16:34

ive got a really good watch...£12.99 from argos. xmas is for kids, spend it on them i say

lucyellensmum · 29/10/2007 16:55

Its all relative, at this moment i don't have £5.25 to spend on a watch, there have been times when i have spent more than this on DP and DDs. Ive never spent that sort of money directly on myself but DP has, when we could afford it.

I think that is the key, if you can afford it and can afford to buy it outright, no credit cards then buy it, why not. I don't think £525 is an enourmous amount of money to pay for a watch, although i would be investing my money in something a little more classic than gucci, i think that is more of a fashion statement and you are buying the name. I have hankered after a longes (i think thats how you spell it) for around £800, its swiss made, and blardy lovely. I think i may have a long wait though as our days of extravagent spends seem along way away. But if i could afford it, i would have it.

What puzzles me though, is the need to broadcast the purchase on mumsnet

smeeinit · 29/10/2007 18:14

thanks everyone who left kind, sensible understanding, replies. i am going to get the watch and also the number plate.

bubblepop if i wanted a £12 watch from argos i would buy it,BUT i dont i want the one ive fallen in love with. and of course you are corrcet xmas is for kids, which is why for 11 years of being a single mum ive gone without every year so my boys could have the xmas they deserve, just as they will this year and the next and the next and so on......

lucyellensmum why puzzled?? this is an open forum isnt it?,you know where you have virtual friends who you discuss lifes up,downs and goings on with? why should you be puzzled at my op?

willbiteyourneckandmakeulikeme · 29/10/2007 18:35

willbiteyourneckandmakeulikeme · 29/10/2007 18:56

exactly. i dont buy alot, but when i do i like to buy the best.

but always paid cash. like you, never had credit cards.

gucci watches are beautiful. just make sure your insurance covers you for loss etc.

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 19:29

Oooh I'd love a smeg fridge

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 29/10/2007 19:34

smeeinit, I've had a better idea. Buy ME a watch!

smeeinit · 29/10/2007 19:42

oh it looks like the smeg fridge is waaaay more popular than the watch?!

OP posts:
colditz · 29/10/2007 19:51

God I'd be terrified to wear a £500 watch! I borrowed a designer bag for a night out once, I felt like stuffing it up my top all night.

If it makes you happy, go for it, just don't do anything that wll make you feel guiltyl.

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 29/10/2007 19:54

I had a Smeg fridge once - and an oven - the stainless steel ones, not the 50s retro look.

I still miss them .

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 22:03

Awww LL

GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 29/10/2007 22:19

I know, doesn't your heart bleed for me

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 22:24

I was genuinely sympathetic... does that make me insane?

NBheebieGeebies · 29/10/2007 22:29

Oooh buy the watch!!!!
Tis lush.

But but but have you thought about an Omega Diamond Constellation with a Mother of pearl dial?

lomondgore · 29/10/2007 22:38

Hope you don't get the numberplate (tacky) but whatever floats your boat

Just wanted to add that I am on a very low income and couldn't inagine spending that on a whole new wardrobe never mind a watch.

HOWEVER

I see nothing wrong with talking about buying it, even just showing off . From what I have read you have worked very hard to be in the place where you can afford it so why shouldn't you post on here.

Just because I am in a situation where I don't have much money does not mean I get jealous when other people talk about spending it.

Spend away and enjoy!
