To tell my friend I don't want her "birthday gift"?

Three weeks ago my friend asked me to look after her 2 hamsters whilst her house was being decorated.
I have never had hamsters and I don't really like them but she was desperate for someone to look after them so I said yes.
When she has asked how they are I have been positive "oh they are fine don't worry we are getting on great" etc etc
Today is my birthday ..she rings me
As my gift to you I'm letting you keep the hamsters ...
So I said "oh no don't be silly,I've enjoyed having them but they belong to you"
She replied .."no no I insist ..."
I don't want them
Aibu to say no ?
I think she just can't be arsed with them anymore tbh

She’s probably realised it’s a boy girl
Mix and you are about to have 20
Hamster not 2

tillyandmilly · 18/01/2021 22:01

poor hamsters! why did she have them? Really cruel - animals are not disposable! She should take them to a rescue centre if she can't be bothered with them !

WeAreShiningStars · 18/01/2021 22:11

Ugh. Suspect she's happier without having the smelly little things around to deal with. Bring them back; don't even ask, just show up with them.

Happylittlethoughts · 18/01/2021 22:28

You have yourself a true CF 😂 Happy birthday 🎁

BlowDryRat · 18/01/2021 22:38

@CoraPirbright

Cheeky cow doesnt really cover it - horrible, selfish bitch would be more like it!! I think honesty is what’s required here, with no “thank you” or “sorry, but..”:

To be totally honest with you, I only looked after the hamsters as a favour to you. I don't really like them - if I wanted hamsters, I would have hamsters. Now I feel like you are trying to palm them off on me. Please come and pick them up this evening as I do not want them and will not be taking care of them any longer.

Then I would be taking a long hard look at this particular “friendship”.

I'd send the middle paragraph OP.
Feedingthebirds1 · 18/01/2021 22:40

I'm in NW England if that's any help OP.

DP has banned me from having any more hamsters because I get so upset when they die (all too soon). However I'm sure he'd have to admit that this is slightly different Grin

BlueThistles · 18/01/2021 22:44

She is a horrible person. Obviously she never wanted these Hamsters.. and dumped them on you..

Give them back and stop yourself making/giving any excuses/reasons.. just say NO.

Hankunamatata · 18/01/2021 23:12

omg no. rehome asap

partyatthepalace · 18/01/2021 23:15

That’s hilarious

Of course just say no, and say you’ll be dropping then back on Saturday

(Is she a good friend?!)

BloggersBlog · 18/01/2021 23:15

And in the land of "this didnt happen" this is city centre

BlueThistles · 18/01/2021 23:16

@Hankunamatata

borntohula · 18/01/2021 23:16

Super cheeky of her but poor hamsters!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/01/2021 23:17

She’s probably realised it’s a boy girl mix and you are about to have 20

Grin Grin

OP, you could always post them back through her letterbox ...? (Only joking)

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 18/01/2021 23:24

This has made me sad.

I’m on another thread posting about possible surgery for our beloved hamster. This absolutely isn’t your fault OP. And I’m not blaming you. But would you consider keeping them and then re-homing? Your friend seems very callous towards them and they are so vulnerable and dependant.

I know they are only small, but they deserve owners who care about them.

You would be doing a good thing if you tried to ensure their well-being.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 18/01/2021 23:26

Oh. Feedingthebirds1 - someone after my own heart!

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 18/01/2021 23:30

The poor little hamsters Sad they need looking after just as much as any other living creature.

I absolutely would NOT drop them back with your friend - she will neglect them. Ring a rehoming centre. They'll hopefully find the little things a loving home where they will be looked after properly by someone who actually wants them.

Happy Birrhday btw x

Hmm
PrtScn · 18/01/2021 23:36

I remember my Auntie doing this to my parents when we were little. She went on holiday and asked us to look after her birds - a cockatiel and a budgie. The budgie was mad, Psychotic Jilly we used to call her. Anyway when she came back from hols she refused to take them back, and my parents just kept them (I don’t know the ins and outs of how this came about). The cockatiel was lovely though. Would fly about and sit on your shoulder. The budgie would go for the kill 🤣

Anyway, I digress. Your friend is a CF chancing her luck. Send the hamsters back, they are a lot of work for a start. If you don’t clean them out every day they stink to high heaven.

grapewine · 18/01/2021 23:50

Next level CF. Wouldn't entertain that at all. Just take them back. And maybe think about whether she's really a friend and taking you for a mug.

grapewine · 18/01/2021 23:51

Three weeks is a long time to look after other people's pets.

OakSun · 18/01/2021 23:53

Wow she’s a CFer, and she’s probably fuming that you can’t see her misguided attempt to offload them. I have a relative that is genuinely blind to the crazy things they do and they present it to others as help etc.

Summersun2020 · 18/01/2021 23:56

Haha cheeky cow! Absolutely drop them off tomorrow and tell her in no uncertain terms you don’t want hamsters.
Also to people feeling sorry for them, honestly as cute and fluffy as they are, hamsters really don’t give a shit if they’re “tolerated” or doted on as long as their basic needs are being met. I really wouldn’t worry about them having hurt feelings... Hmm

Cherry321 · 18/01/2021 23:59

@BornIn78

When you're sure she’s home, leave them on her doorstep, ring the doorbell and shout from the end of her drive “there’s your hamsters, thought I’d save you driving to me to to come and collect them”.

Cheeky fucker.

All of this but do make sure you shout ‘Cheeky fucker’ at the end Grin
tolerable · 19/01/2021 00:16

id rather loose all friends,ever.. than be in same area as any hamster.tell her.no.pets arent gifts.if forced call check shes in,leave on step n hammer on door

They're still living things though.
